  • What does the little mermaid have to do with becoming a Playback Tech??
These 6 tips will help you land (and keep) a gig as a playback tech.
    1. Start with another role - most playback techs are also guitarists, drummers, or guitar/drum techs that learn Ableton to help their band switch to in-ears and start learning tracks.
    2. The Little Mermaid Principle: be where the people are.
    3. Show up and genuinely serve.
    4. Be a “good hang.” If you want someone to invite you on a tour, being good at what you do is only half the job. Being pleasant to be around and spend time with will land you gigs and make people want to invite you back.
    5. Be so good that people can’t ignore you. If you’re fun to be around AND you absolutely crush your job, you’ll always be employed.
    6. Consider working for free (but don’t be taken advantage of!)
Alright playback techs out there! How did you get started and what helped you break into the industry? Anything you’d add or anything you disagree with? Comment below to let me know!

Thanks for the shout out Will :P (I am the knucklehead he is referring too). Great show! I think for me two things were important when I got into Playback Tech stuff: 1. Learning EQ (Emotional Intelligence) knowing how to response to people on an emotional level especially with artists as they can be so attached to their work and you sometimes have to change it or sadly in rare case say NO! and 2. Learn how to bridge the gap between creative and technical language, this is important in being able to talking to the artist (I want the drop to hit me in the chest) and technical people (FOH) (Just boost the sub drop on this track at 60Hz by +6db, please). This way you can communicate to both sets of people on the road, which can really help you massively!

To me an important thing for being a playback tech is to have good quality gears / equipments and a reliable computer. If your goal is to be cover band play back tech get your master set list ready with a good repertoire. I’m a bass player, musical director and playback tech from Canada.

wassup. I just subscribed to you today. But I know your name because of Laura Escude! ANYWAY, I am in Nashville and am a DJ. I think I may see which local bands are using Ableton Live for performance or are interested in doing it. But I already use playback for my own band. So it kinda keeps me busy already. just not paid. ha.
