    Whannell's "Invisible Man" scared the absolute crap outta me. I'll have to temper my expectations since January is usually when studios dump their garbage. One of Redlettermedia's catchphrases is, "F*** you, it's January!" The trailer certainly looks good. Great watchalong! 10/10 fricheks

    I hope we don't shy away from the monster. Werewolf horror is just as much body horror as it is monster horror. I hope we get a decent amount of "the father's reaction to his own body turning into a beast."

    I just pray he will be sympathetic. That was the problem with Werewolf of London. Dr. Glendon was so crabby that there wasn't much difference between him as a scientist & him as a werewolf! Nor did you care! Larry Talbot was written likeably, & Chaney absolutely nailed it! You rooted for him all the way. And now that I've seen a werewolf, I can settle down to have a good sleep, preparatory to my graveyard shift tonight! 😏 🐺

      Yeah, movies that "bomb" on release often look a lot better ten years or so later. I just watched this last night, and it was ok. It's main problem was that it was such a downer - I know that horror films are tragedies but this one could really have used a little humor, better supporting characters, and some glimmer of hope at the end. The gore quotient was way high too, relative to most classic monster remakes. Compare to Coppolla's Dracula or Branagh's Frankenstein (neither made by Universal) - both of these films had their problems but they tried hard to stick to the tone of the original Universal horrors.

    There have been so many great interpretations of the werewolf theme, including An American Werewolf in London which, although a comedy, really ramped up the nature of the transformation with Rick Baker's amazing work on display. Another great variation on the theme is Dog Soldiers about a group of soldiers who are stalked by werewolves while on a training exercise in Scotland.

    Thanks, great review of the trailer! One thing that occurred to me while watching it was it reminded me of another old monster movie--"The Werewolf" from 1956. It's more sci-fi than classic horror, but it's also about a husband/father who becomes a werewolf as a result of an experiment done on him by unscrupulous scientists. Much of the movie deals with the reaction of his wife and young son as they try to cope with what has happened to their husband/father. Wonder if it was an inspiration for this movie? Anyway, thanks again!

I liked the Benicio del Toro version a few years ago, which had disappointing results, but this seems to be done in a more contemporary serious, personal style. Hope they pull it off without making the character bland. Thank you for these videos, always a treat listening to a true monster fan. 😎👍🏻

    It's looking promising, not a remake in any way at all, a re imagining if anything. Pierce trucking!!!!! I agree with the German Expressionist influences, can't wait for your German Expressionist show as I do love the genre & have noticed so many influences & continuations from those movies in Universal horror, film noir, modern movies too. The use of colour, those greens & the red in the confrontation scene looks to have been digitally manipulated, but it does give a great effect, expressionism used shadows to great effect, if there had been colour in those days then they might have done this too

    I read the synopsis amd it mentions that Blake( Christopher Abbott's character) father goes missing so I'm guessing Blake's father is the werewolf that scratches Blake and he's the one to give the curse to Blake, also I'm guessing Universal didnt release Wolf Man this month because this month is already packed with movies like Joker Folie A Deux , Terrfier 3 , Smile 2 , Venom The Last Dance, and Your Monster like this month is stacked and i couldn't see Universal releasing Wolf Man in November or December either so January probably was the best option.

    I think it’s a shame really when they do these updates they just throw away any of the old romance of the old films.would be interesting for examples if if they used Siodmarks original script. The Ginger snaps was a phrase for periods in the film as it’s became symbolic of women’s time of the month I don’t know if it will become a thing I’n this film.

    Great job pointing out the vibrant greens, I would have totally missed that. Once you brought it to my attention, I wondered if the green trees and grass was for Nature and when he is shown wearing a green shirt it is him reverting to his natural, animalistic self?
    I'm not sure I'm going to like the movie. It looks like it is triggering people's anxieties about the pandemic and watching a loved one get "infected", coupled with triggering people about domestic abuse. Domestic abuse needs to be responsibly discussed and called out, not used as a scare tactic. I could be missing the thread on this, just what I got from the trailer.

    • @AntoniaCarlotta
      @AntoniaCarlotta  3 месяца назад +1

      That could make sense about the greens!
      Someone also mentioned reading a synopsis where Christopher Abbott's dad has been missing, and a theory that he's the wolf man who attacks at the beginning. If so, I could see it all being an allegory for generational trauma or something like that.

    Problem is the casting - this series of reboots has struggled enough - you're going to need a very good script to sell tickets without a name on the marquee. Julia Garner is sort-of known (sort of) but she's not playing the title character. Also the movie looks small - I don't see a lot of money up on the screen. Universal Monster films should be fairly epic with a full cast and good locations. This one looks too much like an indie horror film with minimal actors and sets. Sorry to be a bummer but those are my first impressions.

    Why is a family involved? Why is a child character in it? This is political; this film caters to family values. Your father's studio is using children to manipulate adults to see this film. Hollywood has produced too many movies with spoiled brats. Why could it have been about adults only having this problem and no children? This has been typical of Hollywood since Fort Lee, New Jersey, 1910.
