Craig has underrated stand up, but when it comes to a judge’s decision it’s not worth it to him to stand when getting taken down could lead to a judge seeing that as the defining factor. Because of this a lot of his matches end in guys just trying to stall him out from top
Wrestlers do it every single day in every single gym during grappling classes. Shouldn't they be trying to pin their opponent to show their domination in the least?
So this is the match Craig was talking about on the podcast... I love polaris but the ref definitely should've put the pants on and tell Davi Ramos to sit the fuck down lmao

If you understand no Gi jiu-jitsu scene you will understand my words. Craig wanted to win. Davi was there fighting to not lose. He never passed frames what kind of top control is that? What a boring match. Ramos didn't attack at all and Craig just laid in bottom half and tried to muscle the leg and get under him the entire time. The running away was bad, but also, what is he supposed to do when the only engagement he's getting is for the other guy to attack the same leg in the same way over and over again? There was an interesting commentary on the need for understanding the ruleset for matches like these, but I think that the ruleset is still so game-able that it negates the real essence of what Jiu Jitsu was meant for in the first place which was self-defense. I'm totally game with keeping strikes and stuff out of BJJ, but the ruleset should be designed around rewarding the player who maintains the position that would be most valuable in an actual fight. Without a shift to something like that, all we will ever get is butt-scooting.
Yeah but that’s with a proper rule set. In ufc or unified rules you could breakdance and when the guy tries to kick your leg stake it on the head and you win.
People here complaining about Ramos not engaging, and then we have top BJJ guys like Ryan Hall and Kron Gracie goes to MMA and literally flop around like a dying fish. BJJ people have a very wrapped and entitled perspective of what is fighting and what is grappling. Disengaging is just as big of a part of grappling as engaging. Many MMA champions spend like 90% of their grappling training time for TDD and standup, including Volk who was trained by Craig Jones. The fact is in grappling, if you want to engage but can't keep your opponent engaged, you are ineffective.
