    Hi Matt, I'm a Mexican and I'm learning Japanese from Mexico. Of course, I'm using the massive immersion method to learn it. Yo have been a real inspiration for me, thanks for that. I really love Japanese culture but is not only for that reason that I'm learning Japanese; there is a test (JLPT, N3) coming up this june, if I happen to pass it, I'll be able to get a very good salary here in Mexico as an interpreter that could literally change my life for good. I'm really grateful to you because of that, because you thaught me the way. This new project that you have, I want to be part of it. THANKS MATT

    Genuine question for Matt about what the lady said at 6:29, doesn't this blow a huge hole in the input hypothesis and its offshoots (assertions that you don't need to practice output separately and that it mostly follows from just acquiring the language through input)? Come to think of it, I know many people like this; children of immigrants who understand their parents language perfectly but can not speak it.

    • @mattvsjapan

Not only one on one (because obviously you can kind of guide the conversation or the things being talking about will tend to be about you) but also a group of Japanese people. At 7:20, the woman isn't commenting on how fluent Matt is, she's just making a comment on how the amount that he's studied - I'm not fluent or anything but I found that pretty obvious. This is either an oversight by whoever TLed this or an instance of "creative liberties." One could also argue that "it's what the woman meant by what she said," but we as the viewer don't have that context, so it's best to assume that she was purely commenting on how much/how long he's studied.

    • @Powerphail
      @Powerphail 2 года назад +12

      I think their listening is probably so so and they haven't actually acquired that much input over their lifetime. Like they can probably understand what their parents are saying but probably don't have enough comprehension to feel comfortable in the language outside of that domestic setting. My friend's parents spoke to him in a mix of Urdu and English so he can understand what they mean, but that doesn't really mean he can speak very much or would be able to keep up with a film entirely in Urdu. Or alternatively, they could have pretty good comprehension but just haven't ever tried to speak because of lack of necessity and lack of confidence (though if they made the effort they could probably get fairly proficient pretty quick).

      As an English learner, for the longest time I wasnt comfortable in making sentences and writing in English, despite understanding 100% of everything I read.
      After some time, little by little I tried my hand at it and got more used to using more expressions and outputting in english, instead of translating from my mother language.

      That's true with me. I grew up in Ireland and my parents grew up in Congo and speak an African language called Lingala around me a lot. I can understand the context of what they're saying but if you ask me to speak it I'd just freeze and not know what to say.
