I swear your the most underrated RUclipsr no cap 💯
So true
Go to NZ to get your tat
talk to your parents about your heritage, that way the artist can come up with something for you
true very true if he gonna get a Samoan tattoo or any poly tattoo he should say to the artist it's a success and mile stone from hes youtube channel and thats hes learnt a lot of knowledge about poly culture then the artist will understand
Doesn’t work like that at all
@@juniorpuletua4961 my bad might that comment was wrong actually my bad Im actual getting a samoan sleeve soon
@@tinaliu4583 lol you literally made my day, that's some funny shit. And it doesn't work like that.
Tina Liu a lot of tattooist now don’t know nothing about patterns tbh all they do is draw and give it but let me tell you in every samoan pattern every single one has a meaning behind it and they’re very sacred but if the tattooist is an actual Samoan who knows then he’ll give you a secret pattern and that’s known as the protection pattern and he’ll tell you what it means but that’s depends
13:44 “I’ll just kick man in the face fam”... then you won’t be crying from the tattoo but from the hiding 😂😂😂
yeah I lost it too 🤣🤣🤣
@@Rayup2infinity in there with the bird lad 👀😈
Bahahaha just as I finished reading that comment I look up to him saying just that 😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣
Fun fact: The word tattoo, or tattow in the 18th century, is a loanword from the Samoan word tatau, meaning "to strike". ... In Marquesan, tatu." Before the importation of the Polynesian word, the practice of tattooing had been described in the West as painting, scarring or staining.
🤙🏼💯💯
It was outlawed in Tonga due to the missionaries advising our King at the time to not do it as it was considered un-Christian.
Lotta the tongan family tattoos were put on tapa cloths to carried down generations. We still have our family ones.
@VK Westie 3021Not even OW!🤣
@@snakesteeth9401 wow that's awesome to hear! I know they've been thinking about revitalising tā tatau so it'd be cool to see some of the ngātu patterns that were once part of the tatau culture return.
@@deeteewritesthings2024 if i remember correctly there is a tongan version of the samoan pea its ment to finish above the knee. also i know the samoans dont make tapa matts they normally buy from the tongans or fijians. so i wouldnt be surprised if some of our heritage tattoos have intergraded into there tattoos
Last time I checked, we Samoans do make our own tapa mats they just aren't frequently used as everyday wear as the Tongans do.
And considering that Samoan tatau is one of the oldest art forms, to say that there is any link to Tongan heritage is a pretty weak claim. Take pride in your own culture but don't try to claim ours was inspired by your own.
Marquesan people ( part of french polynesia) did full body tattooing, head to toe, they also have their own traditional patterns like all polys. That's how we can tell, what island you come from, based on the different patterns 😊
For the Pacific Tatau they had full body Tattoo's.
You're now my favorite RUclipsr m8. ❤️💯 From WA
To get one, you have to understand the culture and meaning behind the tattoo not just because it looks cool🤟🏽
Yeah bit like the Japanese needle tats
I’m surprised no one commented “ My body, my tat “ yet 🙄😂
I’ve seen a lot of teens getting Samoan tats that can’t even speak the language which is pretty embarrassing if you ask me
Leleiga Taofinuu there’s
More ways to connect to your culture than actually speaking the language lol
Noneh Tt 🤔 huh
The word tatoo derives from the Polynesian word tatau and so does the word taboo also comes from a Polynesian word tapu.
If you go to taiaha school, you can earn pohoru( leg and bum tattoos). This is for warrior's to earn and anyone can earn it. I've done taiaha with a full Scottish dude and other cultures. The cool thing about his taiaha was he had a quilt instead of feathers around his. Was very cool to be able to share our culture and knowledge.
I love the Samoan tattoos. A lot of people use samoan patterns they look awesome.
Hey Toko I love your content it's cool to see someone from the uk really deeping the culture 💯
All Polynesian cultures have tatau. Where the tatau is located and the designs vary depending on where you’re from. The Rock is Samoan, raised in Hawai’i. Aquaman aka Jason Mamoa is Hawaiian. Also, women and men were only allowed to get tatau in certain places.
You’ll find it’s split with Samoans but most don’t mind if you represent our culture with tatau as long as you know and understand what you are getting. Hope to see you rocking one someday uce
Ur conquest is, get urself a samoan girlfriend/wife and if you love Nd honour her family traditions, then that’s ur way of getting a tatau 😉😂good luck your gunna need it 😁🍷
New follower, and all i see is spam content around samoa 👌 somebody get this guy a samoan wife already 😂😂
No you have too be a high chief or a high chief decendant too a tātau
Kau vai is a leg tattoo and a kau Lima is an arm tattoo usually bands around the leg or arm and families like to get the same design. I'm half maori half samoan. Love your videos ❤ living in Australia
Vae not vai lol
@@yourfather1026 yes my other comment got corrected but thankyou ❤
Haha yo seki❤️
The word tattoo comes from the word tatau as it was mostly practiced amongst pacific islanders.
The fact mman is wanting to know more about the Polynesian culture makes me love you even more myguyy💙✊🏽
My man As soon as you said you wanted to earn it .you got ma pass lad 🔥
Got mine too bruv
💯✊🏽
Go to NZ for your tatau. The artists will sit down n talk to you and get to know you a little bit. What's been going on in your life, life events, tragedy etc etc and then will design from there. I've always found that the artists designs are best once they personalize it to your past, present, future .
Also NZ will have tatau artists from all over the pacific 🤙
@@neiltf1173 I’m half samoan with my other half being a descendant of kenyans. I’ve been separated from my culture kind of because my family doesn’t really carry out traditions from either sides but I’m researching and teaching myself about my culture. Will I be able to get my traditional tattoos and live in NZ with no problem? If you look at me you can tell I’m half samoan I just have slightly browner skin.
You have so many poly viewers ... if you were to ask a Polynesian fan to draw up a tatau for you that represents you in the poly culture, you might be surprised and get many replies. 🤙🤙
Bro I love your personality😂
Experience a live tatau session being done on a male (obviously with the permission of the tufuga) and see the reality of how its done and the pain all men go through when receiving this. I myself have one and never regretted it. And from there on you can learn bits and pieces of the culture and get a sleeve similar to Dwayne but not identical. That way you kind of feel like you understand it in your own way and appreciate the culture. Or tell the tattooist your background and your upbringing and he'll incorporate it into your sleeve 😊 just a thought bro but love your content.
Side note: get it done in nz.
Bruh i choked on some apple cuz you were laughing at the OLD LADY WITH chin tattoo. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂24.58
Aquaman (Jason Momoa) is actually Hawaiian....in Aquaman his characters father in the movie and in real life is Maori from NZ...not gang affiliation...cultural connection
15:55 😂😂fk man I love when you do those ones you win lad 😂
A traditional tatau or tamoko is like an heirloom or identifies where you are from. It represents our family and genealogy for all Polynesians.
Its about who you are and where your lineage comes from your bloodline. Genealogy
24:37 Ghees shes stuning init fam
24:51 Ghees shes Bahahahaha
im dead fam lol
Shout out to you fam for respecting the culture 💯💯
Tatau the sound the stick makes when they tap together
My first Tā Moko was only supposed to be on my foot, however my Tā moko artist had a vision & asked if I could trust him & trust myself to extend it. My Tā moko starts at my foot & extends to my calf & it’s so special
My mum is from the Pacific islands and in two weeks I am getting my first tribal tattoo
Tattooing in some cultures was outlawed because of colonisation. Christianity tried to ban tattooing but were unsuccessful in Samoa and Aotearoa. Tattooing went underground for sometime.
Don't come to Australia 😂 go to NZ if you want to get a proper one lol
@davidsavelio a "proper" one?....can you please explain in detail so we nz-born Coconuts now living in Australia understand.....👀👀👀

The word "tattoo" is a loan word from the samoan word "Tatau"
Jason Momoa (Aquaman) is Hawaiian, who are also of the Polynesian family. lol
He likes to claim hes Maori tho saying his ancestors were from aotearoa and moved to hawai'i which honestly you can sorta see in his appearance he got a slight maori look to him

Man Boss you need to go to Aotearoa (New Zealand) or Samoa to get a Tatau! 💪🏾
Your pronouciation of Pacific is pretty awesome
When you said you wana earn a tattoo just means you respect our culture. Unlike jason derulo who got it and never learnt anything abt the polynesian. As long as you respect and get a poly tattoo artist then it will be good. Thank you for being respectful
Come to nz bro. Get yaself a ponamu taonga also bro. Love how your inspired by the culture

I see you going big if you react to more popular things you are very charismatic.
The man that played aquamans father was Maori too, his name is Temuera Morrison.
Love that you embrace our Polynesian culture.💕🤙
Haha. Aqua man is Hawaiian, not Maori. Just to let u know. But they’re all Polynesians.
Jason momoa is Hawaiian but his version of aquaman is obviously atlantian but heavily based on maori mythology he even speaks maori in the movie
@@tysonkahukiwa5447 yes n hawaiian language n maori are close like all poly languages!😊💯

Thank you for actually putting in effort in you’re Pronunciation.
17:55 that's a Fijian tattoo called the kesakesa.
Just thought I'd let you know you're right about tattoos. The word tattoo originates from the pasifika word tatau. The European settlers didn't know how to pronounce the word lol and so does the word Tapu which is taboo in English meaning sacred or forbidden.
Bro straight up .. your the man at reactions 🤙🤙🤙🤣 ..
Aquaman is Hawaiian but he fully embraces Maori culture. The chin tattoo (moko kauae) is for wahine (women). Tane (men) have full face moko 😁💚☮
Mad luv your energy right cuz
Bruh, download adblock extension on chrome hahaha, I'd be "that's mad man" -*Ads*... hahaha
you are right the word tattoo comes from the Samoan word Tatau
Bro just buy some kava for the lads and you're good to go 🤣. Make sure you have heaps of tank tops cause you'll be flexing the tatau for daaayzz fam 🤣🤣 noo cap!
People will come at you if you have a Samoan, Maori or Fijian style Tattoo but your not even from those countries, most of all if you're not even from the Pacific. This is because it's a recognition of our culture and heritage. It's not just a trend, it's who we are. And cultural appropriation is a bitch move too.
Back then, my grandfather and some of my uncles tattooed their tatau from late Tulauena when he was using tatoo equipments that was made from sticks and wild boar teeth.
Samoan patterns are HEAVILY influenced worldwide & its incorporated in a lot of Polynesian tattoo's, don't believe me, look out for the Spears which people seem to use alot... DC's Aqua Man used that shit on Jason Mamoa also... CheeeHuuu
Those were Hawaiian designs g
@@dalastkanakamaoli9058 Samoans been using those patterns for thousands of years G, yous are descendants of us Uso, go check your History. Alofa Atu
To know if it’s a Maori tattoo is if it’s on the face or on the chin or if you see heaps of curls on a tattoo it represents a native plant in New Zealand called the koru
Brother you've become a pasika ambassador. Haere mai ki Aotearoa.
Brother, loving your clips with our Polynesian culture. One thing I think would be awesome for you to check out, is the new wave of metal bands. Like Shepherds Reign and Alien Weaponry. Would love your reaction.
It got outlawed in Tonga when King George the 1st took on Christianity... Most our Idols and Dark ways got Outlawed and when Christians preached that you shall not mark your Skin Tattooing was one of the first things to get Outlawed...
You said tatau like a boss my uso...
The English word for TATTOO, was borrowed from the Samoan word "TATAU"
Thats not what a typical fijian looks like. There skin ranges from tanned to melanin. I grew up in fiji and its beautiful with friendly ppl.
Check out the Lapita pottery Lapita people are ancestors of the Pacific Polynesian Peoples their ancient patterns on the pottery is the artform inspired in our Polynesian Tatau💯💙
Another cool video
Those pattern are not new they are either very old or inspired by old Pacific designs.
You are right that Tattoo is dervived from Tatau...props to you for investigating our culture.
Bro our reflexes have been LITERALLY trained to stay down because if we like kick our parents while they whooping us they'll whoop even harder 🤣🤣😭😭 so we have control over our reflexes and stuff 🤙🏽🤙🏽🤣🤣
I wouldn't say you need to go through a test or anything. For me personally just learning, embrassing and acknowledging our culture and knowing that you'll educate others already kinda makes you worthy to have one. But it does piss me off when random people who know nothing about the culture and dont educate themselves just think "hey it looks cool I wanna get one". It's cultural appropriation at the end of the day, just be respectful and the fact that your learning all of this and are so interested just shows how open and willing you are👍
Get a tatau in Samoa brother🤙🤙 you cn explain the Tattooist your origins then he can do something unique for you
Ray come to New Zealand and walk Te Araroa (The Long Pathway)
The man wrestling at the start of the video is Peter Mavea, he's The Rock's grandfather
Jason’s mamoa is Hawaiian
Yes! The word ‘Tattoo’ originated In Polynesia from the name TATAU 👌🏾We’re what is known as “the original story tellers” & Tatau’s were used as a form of text to pass down stories & document events, family info threw generations.
I real Polynesian never gets tattoos for no reason or coz it looks pretty or colourful or cool or the designs rad (like white peoples 🤣)
There is ALWAYS a reason for us. Usually to Showcase family linkage, heritage, specific event, or tribute. Always a meaningful purpose.
I am a Samoan, my dad comes from a well known Samoan family with high titles & land. I chose to get a malu at 29 (with consent from my parents) to represent my family n pay tribute to my mother. She organised it with the master tatau suluapi & made me get it in Samoa.
My Malu marking mark my mum’s family line. My mum has 9 bro’s & sis and 1 daughter from each of my mums siblings have the Malu marlins of our family.
Every poly has different marking it’s a a family brand. That’s why it’s so unique n special.
You won’t get jumped lol but guys right don’t get what u don’t no. Get a mix of poly islands not just 1.
Hence why the Polynesian culture has survived and thrives threw time😁
You can actually pass for Fijian because a lot of Fijians are of African descent because our ancestors came from Africa and settled in Fiji. I’m half Fijian and Mexican and my mom(Fijian) has dark skin and curly kinky hair as do my uncles aunties and cousins from that side, you should watch a video about native Fijians and see.
2022 and I've got my traditional maaori tattoos on my legs and face😁
In Hawai'i we say KAKAU and the tap artist will ask you questions about your family lineage and where your from and they come up with a personal art
Bro l swear ur Samoan man...haha. Respect bro👍🏾
Ayeee my afro uso...I’ll send some poly tees for you to wear when doing these poly vids uso. Really enjoy watching your videos and really appreciate you not just watching but learning as well. Lmk
Honestly bro, in today's society, da usos & tokos are more friendly about it.. at least out here in the bay area. Although we would appreciate for people to be educated about the art they put on their body, it's still our own kind tatting them up lol
As a traditional Maori carver for 40yrs, if you want one designed to your whakapapa (genealogy).Let me know.
If u want to do the Haka got to come to New Zealand 🇳🇿 my g. Love ur vids, solid as 👍👌🇳🇿
My Uso Ray Yessah Blessah 💥🔥🤙🏽
Aquaman actor is not Maori. He is Hawaiian. Each island tattoos and patterns are different. The leg tattoo is called soga’imiti which is Samoan. Maori Chin tattoo is called moko. Every islands have different names for their own tattoos, and each patterns represent something about their culture and family. They all have different meaning... The leg tattoo is not called Kau vae, I believe the person who wanted one in the video did not know much about the tattoo itself. It is called the “soga’imiti” not kau vae.. Kau Lima yes that is correct (arm tattoo) which is a casual name for arm tatt.. Not to be a downy for the people on this video but i would love to have an expert explain the real meaning and actual names of these tattoos on the video instead of just casually calling it as whatever they can come up with...
Kau vaeis the band around the leg or ankle. Kau Lima is the band around the atm. He wasn’t claiming the pe’a is “kau vae”. I think you took it out of context toko.
Yea he was talking the band around the leg or ankle is a kau vae like the arm band is a kau lima.
Pacific 2 Da Rim oh ok my mistake. Sorry about my ignorance.. I just thought he was referring to the pe’a. 👍🏽
Every pattern tells a story of everyday life in the islands. From the shape of small fish, ocean waves, to the shape of spearheads stacked next to each other to weaving mats in some and to the extend lines of weaved ropes from pandanus dry leaf, all in fine minute detail... They did not just make the patterns out of thin air.. The original tatau tufuga (artist) conceptualised the patterns using their everyday knowledge of what they see and use as tools in pre coionial-era.
As Māori we have 2 different 'styles' of traditional Ta Moko. There is the Ta Moko itself which is designed by Māori for Māori, and is reserved for people with Māori ancestry. Moko Kauae (chin tattoo) for example is a part of Ta Moko so can only be worn by Māori women. The other style is Kirituhi, which is designed by Māori for non-Māori. You'd have to find an artist beforehand because not all of them will do it but there are lots that will. They'll ask about your family, yourself, your achievements, what you want represented etc and then they'll design something unique for you. The main thing that poly's get annoyed at is when we see a non-poly with just a random poly design. We all know our specific patterns so well that we can all tell when one is meaningless. So if you want to get one I would just say get it done correctly, not just something random from a random artist. We love it when we can see our cultures on anyone's skin, especially if they wear it with pride and know/can explain the meaning. But remember, any poly on the street can usually tell if a tattoo is authentic or not! That's what they mean by the whole 'you'll get jumped' thing lol
Get together with some Polys and have do the Kava ritual. Also learn about the patterns and what it means to you. I like that you said you want to earn it, not like other non polys who just get it to have it.
Awesome Bro,
Getting a Tatāu without knowing the meaning or a chief connection can be disrespectful. But if you want one, understanding the culture and meaning first before getting it is what I recommend
Maori tattoos are the one with koru's and spiral looking ones the triangle looking style tattoos are Samoan, polynesian, aqua man Polynesian,
The one on aqua man are Hawaiian designs especially the shark teeth designs
Nah the “geez she-“ on the old lady 😂😂😂😂😂
My artist ONLY does (after he hand-draws) the tatau for each person individually. He’s done more famous people than anyone realizes at least in America. But no two are the same; it depends on who you are/where you’re from/etc
For example- mine started from above my hip to below my knee.. then he extended it to around my back and over my shoulder but still looks feminine. In my hafa Kasi culture
I have a BA in māori visual art and what I do with paint has nothing compared to Tāmoko x😘
10:14 idk why he said that, I have met a lots of new mates, when I saw them with samoan tattoos, like Indians with Samoan tats looks mad bru❤
A foreigner getting a samoan tatau will not get jumped by any samoan.
tatau means open wound in Samoan and Aquaman (Jason Momoa) is Hawaiian
What's wrong with that we all poly cuhz
In Tuvalu where my mom is from they did tattoo on the ribs and forearms.
