Thanks for the encouragement hermana. Good question. My take: I believe tongues is a gift given by the Holy Spirit for specific moments, but only for two purposes. The first is to speak privately between you and God, although I do not believe this is a common use of tongues. The second is to share the gospel message with someone in their native language. So basically, for me, tongues is private or for exposing Jesus in someone's language you don't normally speak. To speak randomly in tongues or an incoherent string of words, as I've heard some preachers do does not edify the Lord if no one understands it. It brings attention to the speaker, but not to the Lord. I myself have never spoken in tongues, but I know some people have the gift. I feel this is the guideline from 1 Cor 14. Appreciate the question.
