Facts on the homeless bit. In the D.R. they come clean my windows on the truck, clean the tires, clean my shoes, carry the groceries to the car, ask to wash my truck and all other sorts of things. In 10 years, I don't ever recall one person just asking me for money without offering some service. To be a 3rd world or developing country, I respect the hustle and the overall vibe of the people. A few dudes in my neighborhood may ask to drink a beer with me at worst. But they do little stuff to help me out all the time.
Im from the UK and its a great point you are making about poverty. Back in my native Ghana we have househelpers who wash our clothes clean the family home drive us around etc. I gave a somebody who was begging some money and the man goes straight to the betting shop right in front of my face!
You should read “the Glass Castle” by jeanette Walls. Not a promo but its about someone who grew up homeless and what it was like for them and their parents its pretty interesting.
