- That sacramental wine sure got a little stronger over the years...
This is a slightly older video (as you can see by the resolution) but it's brought to you today by popular request. Of at least one person... Actually I think Dave even asked me where this one was so that's at least two people.
Back of the throat savegry! 😂😂😂😂😂
Just had some of this last night. Helps the throat like magic during the cold/flu season.
It is really smooth and tastes ok. I wouldn't look to this for something good to drink but just for something to down without it being unenjoyable.
You guys are so entertaining with your descriptors. Thank you for guiding me in my purchases!
Again, thanks for uploading this. I will try to explain why I was interested in your take on an American brandy. I too was surprised when I learned that there is such a thing as "American brandy." I am a Canadian and in my province (British Columbia) literally all of the brandy on the market is from Europe (most of it from France). A few years ago I started looking at websites for American liquor stores, mostly out of curiosity to see what their prices are for various whiskies, and I saw recommendations for American brandy brands. After doing a little research, I found that there are four primary, corporate American brandy brands: E&J, Christian Brothers, Paul Masson, and Korbel. After being shocked to discover there's such a thing as American brandy, my next shock was over how ridiculously CHEAP all of these brandies sell for in the US. What you reviewed in your video is the Christian Brothers VS, the youngest brandy in their product line. Right now, at a store in Seattle, a 750ml bottle of that can be purchased for $7.99 plus tax. I converted that into NZ dollars for you, at current exchange rates: 13.74. For a 750ml bottle. That same store in Seattle sells Hennessy VS Cognac for $42.99 plus tax. Christian Brothers' oldest brandy is their XO. That sells for $20.99 plus tax for a 750ml bottle. Hennessy XO at the same store? $199.99 plus tax. Now, to state the obvious, without ever tasting American brandy, I am sure the cognac must be BETTER brandy. But for the extreme price difference, it probably has to be better by many, many factors to justify spending so much more money for it.
Anyway, the reading I have done on the subject of American brandy has uncovered some interesting trivia and I think there is one fact that is particularly fascinating. The state of Wisconsin has an absolute obsession with brandy that manifests itself in something strange. As you know the cocktail called the "Old Fashioned" is made with bourbon. But if you go into any bar in Wisconsin and order an Old Fashioned, unless you specify up front that you want it made with bourbon, the bartender will automatically make it with American brandy instead of bourbon.
Good info. Alas once you add our tax and shipping, even the cheapest American bottle is going to end up pretty steep once it gets down here. Interesting about the brandy old fashioned, but I could totally see that working.
The state of Wisconsin consumes 1/3 of all brandy made in the U.S. and produces a couple also. Korbel brandy, another California distillery, sells 1/2 of their stock to Wisconsin.
CB is a great product considering the low cost. Light years above Paul Masson VS. For just a little more, EJ offers a much more refined experience imho. CB is rather sweet, and although the finish is a bit short, overall this has character. Taste: 7, Value 9, score 8
Yeah, just had this last night, it really does hit the back of the tongue with a very odd taste for a lasting time. Did not enjoy that, but after the second shot it was easier to ignore.
I like Christian Bros. VS, although I prefer their VSOP and their Sacred Bond (100 proof). There are MANY brandies made in the USA! Apple brandy, too.
If you can find Sacred Bond, that's Christian Bros' very best. It's a 100 proof bottled-in-bond brandy. It's my cocktail brandy of choice.
In the US we would look at this as bottom shelf brandy....
I sure would never drink it..
But, I am snooty guy who drinks actual cognac if I want a brandy.
Cali/Napa have some great wines...
This is low as you can go.
Its not that great… especially compared to henessy but mixes good with soda.
Christian Brothers is what I reach for when all other brandy bottles are empty. There are many better than this. Look for Copper & Kings if you want to try a premium American brandy.
