This is one of Klemperer's greatest recordings, despite some rhythmic glitches in the 2nd and 4th movements. These would have been easily "correctable". OK insisted on recording entire movements and refused to do snippets and splices. The articulation especially in the woodwinds and the overall balances are just terrific and the spirit and rustic humor of this work are caught perfectly. K's slower-than-average tempi here really do not seem slow at all
Klemperer was the greatest of all conductors of Haydn Symphonies; yes; better even than Walter, Bernstein, Jochum, Scherchen, Dorati, Szell, Reiner, and Beecham, and he had the fabulous Philharmonia of London at his disposal. THANK YOU, WALTER LEGGE for resuscitating the career of this monumental colossus of a conductor and musician!
Love this symphony. Great performance.

Excellent comment! ….as Furtwängler statet, it is all about right or wrong tempi iso fast or slow. The great OK was right, as always. RDS
