Oh wow! So much information packed in to just 9 minutes of teaching. THIS is what the internet should be about. This video is just gold dust! Thanks so much guys, Pianote does it again
This is without a doubt the clearest introduction to chords from first principles. Incredible job explaining the why in three minutes flat. Thank you thank you thank you!
Parallel keys. Who talks about parallel keys on their piano Channel? No one but you. Thanks. Now that I know about that concept/ theory that'll take me to the next level.
Thank you for taking the time to explain all this. All I’ve been told is just do it this way. I understand the process better when I know how and why. I’ll keep watching and see what else you can teach me. I am 65 and practicing for many years. I’m still struggling. Thank you for sharing.
Ok! Thank you, Kevin and team for this unicorn! 😍🤩There is nothing like it! I am so excited and amazed at the same time. I have searched and searched for something like it but no one has been able to explain it with such simplicity yet so comprehensively. Bravo! This is hands down the best video on cord progression and WHY and WHAT you even need them for. Filled in so many gaps for me! ❤ (me sits my coffee down, and runs to my piano, it’s time for practice!)
This is brilliant and I've never heard it said better. I'm ordering my keyboard today. For a songwriter who is not a keyboard player, we only have to learn this in the key of C and we can transpose it for other keys. That's amazing.
Been having a trouble with chord progressions, so i just play it by ear. But this is soooo helpful! It would help me become more versatile with chords and accompaniment, which i desperately need for creating songs
Thank you so much for making this video. A basic orientation on chord progressions is something I have been trying to get my head around for a long time now.
hi, i have been playing piano for almost a year now and i have learned a lot and sometimes its hard to keep up but i am having fun though! haha! im looking forward to learn more! and one of my goals is to create my own song. thank you so much for your teaching!!
Very nice! I learned to play organ. Still play it. Sometimes, I play piano, but I'm not a pianist. Very good information there. I play in a church and many times, I have to put my own chords, because some music sheets just have the melodie, and knowing this is very useful. Great video! 👍
Pianote, you could create a whole 30-day corse based on this video. Lotsa theory and application. It would help so many new piano players. Fingers crossed🤞
I emailed Pianote several months ago asking for a 30 day course in chord progression. The representative that emailed me back said it was a good idea and that they would pass the request along however, I’m not sure how far that message got in the chain of command. I hope to see something soon as I use Pianote to help with stress and anxiety after serving in the military and could use extra help with chord progressions. I have a traumatic brain injury and need as much help as I can get. It is a dream of mine to make and play beautiful music for people who work hard while overcoming challenges such as mine. The things we take for granted as some things come easier to some than others. Happy learning, everyone!
I've never understood this being a very novice, by ear, guitar player. On the odd occasion I have jumped on the piano, I can follow the melody easily but always battle with the chords. I have a good ear but the theory to support my messing around was always a mystery. Many thanks!
The theory is not quite truthful, very simplistic but I get the point. I mean just to prove my point, Eb major and C minor are not the same key. To be clear, they have the same key signature but aren’t the same key. The chords if you use the natural minor are the same but really you should use the harmonic minor because you are dealing with harmony which gives minor keys the different feel and sound that pop songs often fail to produce because they use the natural minor.
While Cm and Eb are not the same key, the point of parallel chords is to achieve a sound that moves out of C major. Kevin simply explains if the minor diatonic formula is hard for beginners to learn they can achieve the same chords by thinking of Eb major. In this example it would not make sense to use the chords from C Harmonic Minor since the V - G major is already present in the key of C.
I hear the melody I want in my head and play until I find it on the keyboard and wished all of this made sense for me but it is like another language. Somehow my fingers know where to go but when I try to name it as progressions if makes my mind fizzle in confusion. I will keep trying though. Thank you
I still struggle to understand how switching up scales works when writing chord progressions. Do you have any videos on that topic on this channel (I already searched but didn't find anything, otherwise I wouldn't ask :D)? So what I mean is (and maybe this is incorrect, cause I'm not an advanced musician at all) that say I'm writing a song. That song has a bassline and it's playing in a certain key. Now I'm trying to find interesting chord progressions. How can I find interesting progressions that don't necessarily stick to the scale the song is written in but still match? Is that even possible? It seems like it when I look at reference songs that I like. I mean, you do it in the video to by going from Cmaj to Cmin. How would that fit to a bassline (or also a melody for example) that is written in Cmaj? Any help would be much appreciated :)
It's a minor chord with a lowered 5th. For C you have: Major C E G Minor C Eb G Diminished C Eb GB The 7th diatonic chord in the major scale and the second in the minor are diminished chords. And to be complete, there is also an augmented chord which is the major with a raised 5th: C E G# But you will not find this as a diatonic chord in the major or regular minor scale.
This is one of those videos, where I think "This is going to make a lot of sense and be important, but I'm just not there yet." Time to stop watching videos and get back on the piano bench.
Geez! Dude, you just revolted the whole pop music industry. 99 per cent of pop singers now wonder if you weren't racist by saying "diminished" the remaining 1 per cent pretends that they know what you're talking about. You're lucky that you didn't mention augmented chords. They would have reported you for crypto advertising viagra.
You made a mistake.. You said C, F and G are the most important chords in any key .. And this is not true.. I, IV, and V are the most important chords. Some keys like G do not even have F . its a F#
Just play songs you like I’m no expert keyboardist I just play a lot when I’m feeling down and I don’t even play properly I just watch song tutorials and learn by ear

Even as an electric guitar and bass player, I found this review on chord progression very useful! Thanks for the great succinct video.
Borrowed chords (mixing C and Cm) are the king! 👑
Thank you, Kevin. I always learn from your videos - you are a great teacher!

Wonderful lesson. What application did you use to highlight the key pressed, please?
Vi - I - ii - Vi is fun to improv over, with like a IV - V - I resolution

You know you got a good chord progression when the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.
You know you have a bad chord progression when it sounds like all of the songs over the past 50 years.

Wait what? Have to watch in few more times. Love it anyways!
The ' 135 rule' is that basic minor, major, diminished, and Augmented , chords must be created using a root 3rd , and 5th.

Time to experiment now 🤭
What are diminished chords?
It's a minor chord with a lowered 5th.
For C you have:
Major C E G
Minor C Eb G
Diminished C Eb GB
The 7th diatonic chord in the major scale and the second in the minor are diminished chords.
And to be complete, there is also an augmented chord which is the major with a raised 5th: C E G#
But you will not find this as a diatonic chord in the major or regular minor scale.
"alrite there it is" =) easy
2:50 Yes, it needs more sad.
I would love to be a professional pianist but I have failed to learn how to play melodies.
