    I like the design of the cabin. It looks comfortable, elegant and robust.
    I find it incredible that it is preserved in such good condition despite the years. I believe that the love, care and good maintenance and dedication of the drivers and mechanics and having good spare parts has done its job.
    Best regards from Chile.

    The Deltic is my favourite Diesel Electric of all time, loved them since my early teens, modern trains will just never have the same presence as these beautiful machines.

    This locomotive is now on display at the National Railway Museum located at Shildon in the North East. Although not a railway enthusiast I visited yesterday & whilst the English Electric Deltic was my favourite the other engines on display were superbly restored & breathtaking in their majesty. Surprisingly both car parking & entrance is free but voluntary donations are welcome. I highly recommend a visit.

    Why is he doing that knocking thing with what I presume is the throttle? Someone must know

  • @CGT867
    @CGT867 6 лет назад

    Most diesel locos have 8 notches on the throttle so they can all power together when in multi-unit. The Deltic - from what I can see in your video - just seems to have one gradual throttle. How does that work in multi? And are those horns just there to make lineside viewers laugh?

    • @laszlofyre845
      @laszlofyre845 6 лет назад

      Not so with older English ones; the' English Electric' manufactured classes had electro pneumatic control, (class 37, 40,55) which was almost infinitely variable between off and full power. It's only the American imports now, that have 8 notches, as they are all required (by FRA?) to be compatible across operators. The Deltic production class conformed to B.R. 'Blue star' system, and all blue star classes were compatible irrespective of builder.(In theory at least). There were other operating system standards too but not widespread. Red diamond being the last UK type in use, which was all electronic, AFAIK.
      As for the horns, I promise from the outside they would make you look up. Also, they may have been modified to comply with noise abatement regs. Crazy!

      Deltics never ran multiple. As express locos they had ample power for their work.

    What exactly is behind that door in the compartment forward of the cab?

    • @gh7319
      @gh7319 9 лет назад +1

      ***** Coal fire? I must say thats a very interesting feature for a DIESEL powered loco. I was hoping for a reply from someone who actually knows their stuff with this.

    • @gh7319
      @gh7319 9 лет назад

      ***** Well I looked up the stats for the Class 55 and there's no mention anywhere of a coal fire backup system, if there were any form of auxiliary power system it would be listed/mentioned somewhere. The only steam usage on the class 55 was a steam heater system (later replaced with electric systems) and chances are if it were a fire heated boiler it would more than likely be an oil burner, not coal, given that oil burners are more efficient and more compact. Whoever told you that all diesels have a coal fire backup are talking out of their arse given that modern diesels certainly don't have anything like that and steam/diesel hybrid locos were only briefly experimented with in the '20s and were abandoned as it was completely impractical. There really isn't much point having a backup power system on locos anyway when the usual thing to do in the event of a breakdown is to call up another loco, or run the train with more than one loco just incase of a breakdown happening, as is standard practice with nuclear flask trains in the UK.
      To be honest I'm kinda regreting ever asking the question, I never thought it would pan out like this.

    • @gh7319
      @gh7319 9 лет назад +1

      ***** Ye I just couldn't be bothered even replying, to the last statement. I did wonder if those compartments had something to do with cooling as I had noticed vents in the sides before in pictures. I'm just unfortunate enough to be someone with an interest in trains yet live where there are no railways, only trains I have seen up close is the odd Class 158 DMU and the only train i've been on was the Glasgow tube, bit of a pain in the arse when you have an interest in them.

    • @gh7319
      @gh7319 9 лет назад

      ***** Well to be honest I just really like just about anything with an engine. When it comes to trains, it's mainly freight that interests me. The closest their is to railways here abouts is the odd remnant of old narrow-gauge track left over from the naval base that was here during the war, decommisioned shortly afterwards, long before my day.

      +Önder Sarıoğlu That was the maximum allowable speed for this particular
      locomotive (class 55) and i do believe that it was in service as a high
      speed locomotive on British railway's on the East Coast Main line
      between London Kings Cross and Edinburgh.

    Great Video but I just can't help saying the compared to US train horns, yours sound really stupid. You don't give much warring if at all and the two tone just drives me nuts. As a country, you should really change that. It's awful. Sorry, but I just can't help it.

    • @TrainsInTheSouthWest
      @TrainsInTheSouthWest 9 лет назад

      Ben Kirkbride totally agree same with some of there locomotives they are also too big and machinery. our locos her in UK have a personality a story to tell about them like the A4s The Castles The Class 50s The Deltics We have a range of different locomotives all with different whistles and horns nothing like The U.S and Steve if u also read this in U.S you need those powerful horns we do not as much. I hate one thing in the U.S Most of your passenger trains are AMTRAK and others but here in the uk we have more then 5 rail company's First,Virgin Freightliner,DB,EWS,DRS and more and tbh i am glad we have locomotives like we do :) P.S I am not starting a war nor an argument just pointing out a few facts so no need for a silly reply

    • @thumper5450
      @thumper5450 9 лет назад

      No bad reply. I understand Your comments. Do note that most all Amtrak horns are the same. You can tell by the sound it's a Amtrak. I like that for sure.
