"You have nothing to lose by disclosing". Uhm, yeah you do. It heavily depends on who you're disclosing it to and with what purpose.

Probably due to aspects of fear, jealousy, or self-centerness. I was bullied for most of my life for being different. Wasn't until I was 33 that I realized my 'difference' was partly due to my ASD. I was lucky in the sense that I could pass undergraduate college without having to study as much as my peers. But I wasn't lucky in terms of retaining friendships or finding acceptance with others.

I disclosed to a person I dated. Then she would say mean things about my family, and when I got upset would say "you misunderstood me, because of your autism". I have learned that disclosing makes me a scapegoat for other people's bad behaviour.

That is always the risk of disclosure. You tell someone and they go home and look it up for 5 minutes then make a judgement about you. I have learned that in relationships and friendships that when you are arguing that whatever you tell them can be used as ammunition to attack you. They can’t use what you tell them if you don’t tell them

People don’t like things different than them regardless of what they tell you. I’d rather have people hate me because they misinterpret my actions as malicious, than constantly be patronized and treated differently for being honest.

I was diagnosed at 31, I am actually happy that I got diagnosed late. Not knowing and simply having no choice but to figure it out and adjust my whole life molded me into who I am. Had I been diagnosed earlier, and knowing how my younger self was, It might have changed my perspective on things and I may have used it in a way to define me and in turn hindering what I could achieve.

Ya, nothing to lose .. If you're retired, enough money on the side, established few friendships with people you can trust, sure, then maybe you don't have much to lose.
You don't know, how people react. They can react very differently. And there's people, who might not let know you, but put you silently on the list of "that person has got to go". The big relief of acceptance is awesome. But you'll never know, on which side the coin will fall. Just saying.. I don't know what path is best here..

I told a close friend, and they replied, "I always knew there was something wrong with you."
I told my mother, and she replied, "Now you have another excuse to lean on."
I told a boss and they said, "Ah, makes sense," and then I found myself unemployed and unemployable.
The trick, for me, is to learn how to accept being hated, feared, ridiculed, and unwanted.

I get that don’t define me by autism thing. Also, don’t blame all of my problems on something I was supposedly born with. It’s like sometimes you lose the right to sound clever and assertive enough about things. I have problems with bullying, coercive abuse and codependence.

@@anonymousmobster2444 It’s about 1 in 30, at this point. That it is common (at least after merging Asperger’s into Autism) is uncontroversial. That doesn’t mean that simply being “shy” and “introverted” makes you a candidate. There are distinct differences in how autistic people process input, and these differences make cultural expectations that don’t take them into account unrealistic. If you’re the type of person who says things like “you know, I’m not the most sociable of people, but I still have enough *respect* to remember a face and recognize social cues” it’s because you are choosing not to get it.
