Success in a teenage Japanese market. It didn't hurt that they were young and handsome. What we didn't know at the time, was that they would develop those musical talents to such a high degree. I still have their albums. Style _and_ substance.
Too many reporters just named Akiko Yano as "Ryuichi Sakamoto's wife" even though she was (and still is) a killer pianist herself and she's got a name... Otherwise, Steve is simply lovely and his filming Ryuichi and Akiko playing together is lovely too.💞
Amazing drummer, lots of talent outside of his music 🎵 history!! I was a Japan fan since late 1979.. loved them ... but as in life things change... it is to bad they broke up but I guess they had there differences....Steve and David absolutely GORGEOUS!!! Richard and Mick gorgeous as well.. R.I.P. Mick taken to soon , but never forgotten..🙏💐 take care everyone , stay safe with luv from Toronto, Canada 🇨🇦 LA 2021
Sakamoto's Ongaku Zakan album is a work of genius. I play it on the regular. Not only is Jansen a phenomenal drummer; he's an engaging photographer. I love how he, Sylvian and Sakamoto have multiple talents.
it's uncanny, i don't know if it's just me, i have grown older and wiser with Japan and a fan from the outset, only now ( maybe it's the lack of Mascara ) do i see how alike Steve and David are in this interview

I love Japan... Very interesting to hear this! This photo trip he did to Japan might be the where they got the idea for the name of the band. And do you know that Japanese piano player is Ryicho Sakamoto, he would later go on to do a song Beautiful Colours with David Bowie. So really, it all started with this trip... Fascinating!
This interview is from 1983. Japan broke up in 1982. Forbidden Colours is a collaboration between Ryuichi Sakamoto and David Sylvian. It was part of the soundtrack for the movie Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, which starred David Bowie.
How bad is the presenter at the beginning? This was the time when young people's tv was associated with amatuer hour because the old guard thought it was what we wanted. The interviewer was very good though.
People were generally much more reserved and were mannered outside their art in that era, the interviewers usually came from a music industry background and had real knowledge on the subject ...1000x better than the modern look at me type of presenters.
Steve and David's style of speech is so similar especially with their head movements 😂. Even their voice are so similar
No great surprise really
Maybe because they are brothers?
@@MacakFric-dt3qg grown from the same laboratory test tubes, yes
@@rickdeckard1075but on a serious note, they are indeed brothers
@@Omnatten9 my comment *was* entirely serious.
A under-estimated drummer. The man can play.

Steve's one of my biggest influences as a drummer. His exotic rhythms are fantastic.

Saw him play live in 1988. Great drummer.

Interesting to see. He was nice to look at, that is for sure. They were quite artistic and had opportunities that way.
My fav drummer
Great to see the home footage of Ryuchi and his wife. RIP.
Me and my brother both bought a (signed) photograph from Steve that day in Covent Garden - a great day
He’s a boy in this interview. Aww.❤️
Steve and David are brothers, just go by different surnames.
for the newbies out there ;)
Yes, Sylvian and Jansen are stage names. Their surname is Batt.
David lifts his left eyebrow and his brother his right during interviews. Roger Moore could lift both.
@@FrankieParadiso4evah Odd, I just thought that myself then saw your post 😂
Why pick names from The New York Dolls? Makes no sense to me!

Brilliant drummer
Sounds so much like David ❤
@Milltinqq
The song you hear is actually "Tibetan Dance" off of Sakamoto's 1984 "Ongaku Zukan" (Illustrated Musical Encyclopedia) album.
When even the master Neil Peart references the way he would go off the Tom instead of the snare an was influenced by that, we’ll need you say more.
Members rush liked Japan
Steve is the GOAT
He's asking a drummer from a band called Japan why he thinks they were so popular in a country called Japan. Nobody ever gonna find out the truth.
Looks very much like a young Elvis Presley.
LOVE STEVE - NOT AN OUNCE OF PRETENTIOUSNESS.
What are you trying to say !

Wow, now we know what Steve-san got up to in the meantime! He's even more delicious than David, and his music is much more layered and interesting.
yes...he is GORGEOUS

the reporter is dead or what, he has no soul
No, he's just a normal British guy. Steve wasn't much different to him.
