Though that said, you could as easily reverse it & use the spike on the back-side of the fasthawk to do what the front side of the Wingard does, but with more weight behind it to punch through skulls.
Very true, but the only people who still use shield walls are riot control officers. I really don't think a decent, or even sane human would really ever attack them with an axe. Hooking capabilities definitely had a place when shields were common, but today i suspect they are more of a liability. Beyond the obvious 'getting stuck in someone's clothes' , imagine you had to defend against a baseball bat or axe handle or steel pipe. When parrying with a bearded axe you would run a high risk of accidentally hooking the heavier weapon and having your axe yanked out of your hand. Historical axes never had this problem, because they were never intentionally used for parrying, the shield took the defensive role.
@@max-zv7sf I can still see a potential use for a hawk with bearded bit against an opponent with a similarly lightweight melee weapon. But like...how often are you getting into fights with people with machetes or knives, right? Lol

Was getting tired, got sloppy and the tsume on my right hand sai nearly disemboweled me! Tore a huge gash through the side of my shirt and made me respect them that much more afterwards!
That's actually quite common. I was warned to avoid it, but didn't take it seriously until I saw a couple of fellow practitioners make that error. I was always hyper-vigilant after that, and still had a close call when working on footwork while striking. Such an amazing and versatile weapon... as long as you respect it! 👍🦅🇺🇸
After watching this and seeing just HOW MUCH he absolutely LOVES that thing, at the end, after the outro and we get to see him just playing/practicing with it. It LITERALLY scared me for him because of how close he was getting to himself with the hooked spike end, like I will say even though he was being fast with it, I could still tell he was making sure not to get hung up on the spike again, but still, there ware 2 times it ACTUALLY scared me watching because he was being so enthusiastic about it that he did come EXTREMELY close. So close that I know if he wasn't being as mindful as he was and if he DIDN'T already have that small brush with it snagging his shirt, that I know for a fact that if it was someone else or especially ANYONE that isn't trained and still practicing mindfully martial arts, they would have ripped their own throat out with it, since it has that curve to it to help with it's concealability. And to be honest I bet he had at least one more close call with it off camera even with him being mindful. I hope some people don't take this the wrong way and think I'm dumping on him or the weapon, because I'm 100% NOT. I've been a long time fan of his for a while (Hell, I even resubscribed to him after my last accident got hacked a few years back, so if anyone would try to say that I'm not a fan of his, I think that alone would dismiss that claim. Lolol) and I actually really really DO like the concealable tomahawk and the guy that made it has an amazing mind! But what I DO think is if someone doesn't have a good amount of practice with that this, they are DEFINITELY going to hook themselves, ESPECIALLY if they actually DO have to pull it out to defend themself because anything can happen and it seems that things happen for the worst when someone gets into that sort of situation. Like the people that EDC Airsoft guns instead of ACTUALLY getting their permit (And I know what you're thinking, but yes, I swear they exist, I've personally seen not just 1, but 3 different people, and 2 of them were when I was in totally different states! I thought it was the dumbest shit I ever saw and heard when I met the first one and thought they were just a little special and let it go. But once I saw that it wasn't just that one dude.... Things totally flipped in my mind about a lot of random people, especially the ones that choose to open carry in states that allow you to do both.) When shit hits the fan.... Like what the hell are they going to do??? And it's even worse when people that EDC and HAVEN'T had any training. I guess that's what it all comes down to. Please, if you're going to EDC something for protection, PLEASE for the love of God if for not just yourself but at very least the people AROUND you, please please 🙏🙏 train and learn whatever you EDC with inside and out.

Love these hawks and the carry system is genius in it's simplicity. I usually always have an Empress or Backripper on me, even just lounging around the house.
Suggestions: 1) should you train for self defense in everyday clothes? 2) how is a water bottle for self defense? Especially a metal one, it works as a makeshift club. Plus if you can splash water, people naturally wipe their face.
Yes..u should train in everyday clothes for self defense. That is actually recommended. I worked as bouncer for more than 10 years at alot of bars and clubs in St Louis City. I normally wore jeans, t-shirt and boots for work, so I always made sure to get at least some of my training in dressed like I would be for work.
One of the best things of the tomahawk is the ability of being able to hook and pull a person into the other weapon, like a big knife, so you can take advantage of 2 handed fighting technique. Having the ability to hook is preserved in this tomahawk while at the same time preventing the unintended accidental tying up of the weapon while it is being deployed. Fast, nimble and light in combat is better then slow and hard to control.
@hard2hurt So, Mike it seems like you may just want a mining type pick instead of a blade. Reason being the long pointed edge would be able to peirce and retract easily. Also, sure you can quick draw the top of the weapon, but you still have to be able to grip it correctly. Seems like that would be an issue.
Imagine trying to explain in court to jurors that the tomahawk was for self defense. At least with a hammer you can just say you just happened to have it.
@@Ashtor1337 Yes. Just like I think it is easier to explain why someone used a gun (which I assume they have a permit for) as a self defense weapon, than for them to explain why they were carrying around a katana. Why? Because I think people are more used to the idea of guns being a self defense weapon and it is easier to come across as not crazy when you do what people are used to. I am just an arm chair expert though. My opinion with no proof.
Wingard really does learn from history and adapts it to the modern time. Tho one observation, spike at the bottom of the handle maybe should be made out of metal.
Now that is a badass weapon. If someone pulls a knife on me, well that's normal, but if someone pulled a tomahawk, I'd run away like a little bitch. Respect. Keep safe.
I agree with the advantages of not having a beard, but having done weapon sparring with axes, the tradeoff is that you're losing a lot of hooking capabilities. I think I would also prefer the wider chopping face compared to the pointed spike that this model has, just due to the type of cutting involved.
The extra Jurassic Park reference at the end earned you that Like. You worked hard for this one, Mike. Sacrificed your shirt and all to the cause. Kudos.
Best Weapon Combos I thought of. Rifle across chest. Sawed off shotgun on right hip. Hatchet/tomahawk with a small 10 foot chain so you can pull it back, use the chain for entangling or whatever stored on the right behind the shotgun on the hip (so you can still tilt the shotgun and shoot it from the hip because its in front). And a bladed Baton Sword on your left hand with an entangling sword catcher buckler over the hand area of the baton sword, with ability to screw the sword off the baton and replace it with 5 foot long skinny lightweight jabbing blade and tie the back part of the baton to the elbow (you can just let go of the baton sword if you need to use your left hand). And then six gun shooter on the left hip. Oh aand a spiked blade at the forehead part of your helmet for headabutting. And 2 spikes on the FRONT of the shoulders for shoulder butts to the face when standing wrestling.
I saw one lady carrying one of these about 20 years ago just south of downtown Tucson, Arizona. It was the weirdest thing I’ve ever seen anyone carry. Truthfully, I think it’s pretty cool.

Historicly, tommahawks are multi use tools. The beard on an axe has a purpose in combat it is used to hook a persons shield as a tool the beard is used to hook brush or choke up on the axe for fine work where you need more control.

Cool stuff. In the EU I'm sure it's illegal to carry a tomahawk. But there's one minor or not so minor thing to consider for self defence tools, and that's blood. I don't have a clue about firearms regarding that detail though.
It's a beautiful piece, and a very clever deployment system. But the curved back concerns me, on top of that...in every demonstration...you have to release the weapon and readjust your grip in order to use it. I couldn't rely on my abily to do that under duress. Even with training, I feel like that time could be spent on a more practical weapon that has fewer downsides. The proof of concept is awesome though 👌
I used to open carry the Traumahawk from Zombie Tools on the regular, because I couldn't strap a knife to my pant leg when I was wearing a kilt, so sometimes I'd just sling my axe from my hip. It wasn't hard to draw quickly because I trained to, but the main thing with open carry in my experience is that it's about intimidating people who might normally try something. Nobody's gonna rob a dude with a big knife or an axe unless they've got a gun, and they have the drop on them, you know? That does look like a wicked piece of work tho- cool weapon.
Neat little weapon. Kind of has "trench weapon" vibes to it, despite how modern it is. I'm concerned about it's stopping power, but Mike doesn't seem to be and it is damn nimble. Looks like it does fill a niche for EDC axes?
I saw you using it overhand Mike, but try reverse gripping it with the crescent side facing towards your body. It greatly increases striking speed, and doesn't make you commit to a overhead swing. You can also use a high guard that way putting it overhead

Lol
@@max-zv7sf I think some of the alt right types in the US are big into shields these days. As regards parrying, I'm no expert, but scholagladiatoria seems to know his business.
@@thedefinitive6296 I am a Venezuelan living in Argentina currently, i have also lived in Bolivia, and visited Peru a good deal. Yeah, knives and machetes become really common in restrictive and poor environments. Still, of course, if you have a functioning brain you shouldn't get in that sort of business with any regularity.
now how about a concealed carry buckler/shield to go along with it
I love how excited you get as you discover this thing
I can't even imagine carrying that thing without getting in legal trouble let alone using it on someone. You can already here the prosecutor calling you a crazy guy that carries around an axe to kill people with, I can't really disagree with that. It is cool though.
Just dont get caught. Simple
I carried an axe and machete in my car for a bit. Got in a car chase and had to pull them out when I got out and the other guy called the cops after. Never used it just told him to back up. Cops let me go but I almost got arrested for assault with a deadly weapon. Seemed like a good idea until I was in the cop car. I don't carry them anymore
@@alexstellar4867 I used ti carry an 11 inches blade, open carry is the only way legally here, but I always thought of it as a deterrent
@@harliiquinnstarlight yeah it worked as one but the guy on the other end of it has the ability to make you look really bad. I'm glad there were cameras and witnesses that could back up my side of the story at the place I stopped because otherwise I'd probably be in jail.
No body, no prosecution
I just got mine in the mail. I would love to see a part 2 video on this product please!
This is what I love about this channel. Practical information even about something as unusual as this. Make and keep it real. Good job. Check out that knife guy over on warrior poet. He's got some very interesting designs. Backward blades for close in fighting. This man was an undercover cop and does a lot of real world purpose designs too. Craid Douglas.
I believe he went to a workshop with him.
@@themadscientest Oh I see that one. Thanks.
🤣 LMFAO!!! I let out an audible “OOOOHHHHHH!!!” As well!!! At 04:48!! Exactly how u did my brother!! I’m immediately sold!! That’s awesome!!! I love ur real world weapon reviews!! Keep up the good work! And thank u for the constant info!! Ur saving lives my brother!!👍🏾
I was waiting for the hook to take a bite out of Mike. I saw someone cut their tricep pretty good that way.
I'm so happy you made this vid! Wingard wearables is so underated
You incident with the hook reminded me when I was training sai way back when doing switching thrusts with two of them.
👍🦅🇺🇸
@@stubbornone1189 Yeah, I love, absolutely love sai. If I needed an apocalypse melee weapon, those are it!
Please, if you're going to EDC something for protection, PLEASE for the love of God if for not just yourself but at very least the people AROUND you, please please 🙏🙏 train and learn whatever you EDC with inside and out.
cry more lol
The tomahawk in this video is the Empress by Wingard Wearables. You can get one at www.wingardwearables.com/
This is not a sponsored ad or anything, I just thought this guy was cool and his product was interesting so I bought and reviewed it. Keep in mind that this weapon is not rated for robots.
I have the back ripper version. He sent constant updates via Instagram so I could watch my project come to life as it was built. Received it in a nice bag with a hand written thanks. I’m so happy with mine and I love to Carry it with my LCP max
Hey I just ordered mine, you should do another video with your Empress. Maybe sparring.
That tomahawk has some serious pull out game
That kind of thinking is how many babies are born.
Love these hawks and the carry system is genius in it's simplicity. I usually always have an Empress or Backripper on me, even just lounging around the house.
H2h is literally feeding my content needs right now
its a very specific kink
Suggestions:
1) should you train for self defense in everyday clothes?
2) how is a water bottle for self defense? Especially a metal one, it works as a makeshift club. Plus if you can splash water, people naturally wipe their face.
Yes..u should train in everyday clothes for self defense. That is actually recommended. I worked as bouncer for more than 10 years at alot of bars and clubs in St Louis City. I normally wore jeans, t-shirt and boots for work, so I always made sure to get at least some of my training in dressed like I would be for work.
3:00 This sniff-bite made me laugh
Its dope. Looks like a combo of a tomahawk and a dagger axe
The axe blade and wearability are awesome but I'm a bit wary of that talon out the back! Great find though
Yeah I am wary of it now too lol.
the hook on the back also seems like a good control point if you wrap it around a wrist / elbow / neck
Imagine being a mugger with a knife and then the guy you're trying to mug suddenly pulls out an axe, that'd be terrifying lol
That design is brilliant.
The wife in full mom mode, "Dont do that" was the best. I'm guessing she keeps you and the kids out of the hospital for the most part.
For the most part, yes.
Lol that cracked me up too, then she asked to stab the box with it! Warrior blood at heart. That's true love. 🤺
You should review all that guys stuff. I checked out the website. It's bad ass.
Kristen: don’t do that. That’s not funny!
Two seconds later.
“let me stab that box”! 😂😂😂
Yeah she just doesn't like when it's not in HER hands.
I've got one its great and light weight it lives on the door of my truck
Imagine trying to explain in court to jurors that the tomahawk was for self defense.
At least with a hammer you can just say you just happened to have it.
It's a self defense tool. He came at me and I defended my self. You think that conversation is easier when you have a gun?
@@Ashtor1337 Yes. Just like I think it is easier to explain why someone used a gun (which I assume they have a permit for) as a self defense weapon, than for them to explain why they were carrying around a katana. Why? Because I think people are more used to the idea of guns being a self defense weapon and it is easier to come across as not crazy when you do what people are used to.
I am just an arm chair expert though. My opinion with no proof.
Wingard really does learn from history and adapts it to the modern time. Tho one observation, spike at the bottom of the handle maybe should be made out of metal.
The spike that goes down my pants?
@@hard2hurt ... and to make it shorter lol. Forgot to add that.
Now that is a badass weapon. If someone pulls a knife on me, well that's normal, but if someone pulled a tomahawk, I'd run away like a little bitch. Respect. Keep safe.
Could we possibly get a video about Sap gloves? Maybe saps and blackjacks too lol
Imagine looking out the window and seeing your neighbor working an archery target with a tiny tomahawk 😂
Lmao. He was so happy when he drew the hawk. Thats what Christmas is really about.
I agree with the advantages of not having a beard, but having done weapon sparring with axes, the tradeoff is that you're losing a lot of hooking capabilities. I think I would also prefer the wider chopping face compared to the pointed spike that this model has, just due to the type of cutting involved.
wouldn't the other side give you just as much if not more hooking capabilities? I could see that being great for hooking out weapons
I think the user-facing spike is more of a problem than an advantage tbh
Agreed. Also quite evident from 9:19
Yep
Yeah, but really nothing a grinder and a bucket of water couldn't fix.
Its definitely something that needs to be considered when training with it...and certainly if using it...
I love the voice crack at 2:19 lmao. He is in love
Why are you gai
Do they make a lefty version so the tail curves the other direction?
i think so. go check them out.
We do but are out of stock on lefties at the moment. Hopefully a few will be made before the end of the month.
The "Quill" he has on his website looks ingenious....
The question i: will the police engage you for carrying it?
yes. This would be illegal to carry, especially concealed, in almost every state.
Check local laws. In my state I can carry a bazooka with a katana as a bayonet so long as I'm not being a general nuisance.
The extra Jurassic Park reference at the end earned you that Like. You worked hard for this one, Mike. Sacrificed your shirt and all to the cause. Kudos.
Thank goodness people still thinkin out the box, this thing looks neat, goin to share!
This was like an early Christmas for you! Ha, YESSS!! I love seeing you this pumped up! :D What a super cool weapon
Yeah I was very excited for it. I love it.
I love how much you enjoy this stuff man, pure joy when the holdster work as intended xD. love from Barcelona
You should've gotten the Quill as well
With the sog you can grab just under the blade and use as a striking weapon too. I do like that Tommy. Great video.
And 2 spikes on the FRONT of the shoulders for shoulder butts to the face when standing wrestling.
that gives me so many ideas, i'd like to see a telescoping titanium handle and a blade and spike end with finger divots for easier deployment.
This vid has helped me understand tomahawks more
I saw one lady carrying one of these about 20 years ago just south of downtown Tucson, Arizona. It was the weirdest thing I’ve ever seen anyone carry. Truthfully, I think it’s pretty cool.
I'm An American of Finnish descent. I've always favored an axe with my firearm and mace. This would make a great option to my collection, after a few modifications.
Here for the self injury and the laughs thanks Mike.
Almost!! 😆
5:45 oof mama was not pleased 😬
Mike's quiet "ok" 🥺
When he but the handle describing the feel. I felt that
This is just a hammer with attitude… I love it
You need to look at the Winkle RnD compact with front spike hundreds of our current US special operations carries them down range every day with a large number of them being Army Ranges ! They are absolutely beautiful and you should check them out
Historicly, tommahawks are multi use tools. The beard on an axe has a purpose in combat it is used to hook a persons shield as a tool the beard is used to hook brush or choke up on the axe for fine work where you need more control.
dude ur freaking awesome! i just started watching youre videos and i love them.... you answer all the questions i would ask and wouldnt ask and the way you act keeps us paying attention.... keep the videos going :)!
I had an NCO who carried a tomahawk on every deployment. I bet he would love this
I love your content, Mike. Just don't stop. Also if you ever want a fun thing to review, please watch the Coldsteel greatsword video and just...treat yourself to a great sword so we can watch you and Seth and Wonderboy explore (play with) such a fine weapon.
The sparring ball looks neat. Kind of like a rhythm bag. My idea was a swinging log from a rope, but this looks doable.
It's so cool to see you delving into this less well known sector of tools.
Check out Necromaker too.
5:50 LOL I love how she was concerned with safety yet wanted to start carving up boxes 📦😅😂
Cool stuff. In the EU I'm sure it's illegal to carry a tomahawk. But there's one minor or not so minor thing to consider for self defence tools, and that's blood. I don't have a clue about firearms regarding that detail though.
Mike, this thing is DOPE!!!
My brain is already trying to come up with justification to have and carry in England 🇬🇧 can't think of one, but that's never stopped me lol 😅
After owning it for 6 months how do you like it? Do you ever carry it?
I saw you using it overhand Mike, but try reverse gripping it with the crescent side facing towards your body.
It greatly increases striking speed, and doesn't make you commit to a overhead swing.
You can also use a high guard that way putting it overhead
Nothing really new under the sun. This is the modern incarnation of the spontoon tomahawk. I like it
