"Detour" is a Western Swing ballad written in 1945 by Texan steel guitarist and songwriter Paul Westmoreland. Coast Records recorded it with Jimmy Walker on vocals and Paul Westmoreland on steel guitar in November that year.
Western Swing innovator Spade Cooley had a big hit with his recording of this song with Tex Williams on vocals in 1946.
Other notable artist that recorded the song include Wesley Tuttle, Foy Willing, Patti Page, Bill Haley, Ella Fitzgerald , Herb Ellis, Dean Martin, Duane Eddy, ...
"Detour" is also the name of a 1945 American movie, which has achieved considerable acclaim as a defining movie of the film noir era.

DETOUR
Detour, there's a muddy road ahead, detour
Paid no mind to what it said
Detour, oh these bitter things I find,
Should have read
That detour sign
Headed down life's crooked road, lots of things I never knowed
Because of me not knowin', I now pine
Trouble got in the trail, spent the next 5 years in jail
Should have read that detour sign
Detour, there's a muddy road ahead, detour
Paid no mind to what it said
Detour, oh these bitter things I find,
Should have read
That detour sign
When I got right to the place where it said "About Face"
I thought that all my worries were behind
But the farther I go, more sorrow I know
Should have read
That detour sign
Detour, there's a muddy road ahead, detour
Paid no mind to what it said
Detour, oh these bitter things I find,
Should have read
That detour sign
When I got stuck in the mud all my hopes dropped with a thud
I guess that my heart strings are made of twine
Have no willpower to get from the hole that I'm in yet
Should have read that detour sign
Detour, there's a muddy road ahead, detour
Paid no mind to what it said
Detour, oh these bitter things I find,
Should have read
That detour sign

"A Jay Wade" listening to you and was thinking it's difficult to pick a favorite. However, I think "Detour" may be it because unlike some other songs you play, I don't think anyone else has covered this. Great lap steel and when you switch vocals is wonderful. Stellar performance.

Great song and performance!
Glad you like it Mary! Thanks for watching!
I love it! You guys are a throwback to another generation, my father was born in 1912 and was really into Jimmie Rodgers and Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys! And everything else in that genre , great job y'all! What kind of guitar are you playing? My dad had a Gibson L7, but he had put some pickups in it.
Thank you so much! This means a lot, especially coming from a fellow guitarist!! We love Jimmie Rodgers and Bob Wills and all the others. Really happy this reminds you of your dad's generation - it's the era we take most inspiration from. I play a 1938 Harmony archtop guitar, but I would loooove a Gibson L7!
Unfortunately my father sold that guitar a few years before he passed away, he would have loved listening to y'all, You guys are great!
Love this song, you guys do a great version! 👏👏
A😊ppreciate it!

Incredible beautiful song. Very nice interpretation ! I love it !
Thank you kindly! 😊
You two compliment each other. Nice arrangement :-)
Thank you so much! 🙏😊
Is this an organ in the background? Love your style! 👏
Glad you like it! Yes it is an organ indeed! It's an old one from Austria, but very out of tune atm 😂
I love to hear a natural accent instead of singing in a southern drawl...Y'all 😉
