The photo of the city centre in 1945 was at the end of world War 2. The city was shot to pieces during the liberation. It took until the 1950/60s to build up again.
I'm born in Groningen, go to school in Groningen, and also lived near Utrecht, worked in Amsterdam.
But when I go to other countries, I miss always that you can walk through the entire inner city.
The oldest known text that mentions Groningen is from 1040 AD, so the city will celebrate its 1000th 'birthday' in 2040, just 16 years from now.
Benni spoke german, as many people fluently do near the Border. Many people change borders there in both ways for living, shopping or working.
And even if they do not speak it fluently most of them at least understand it fine. Had no problem understanding it although I would be searching and reaching for words if I tried to speak German. (Clevelands (Duchy of Cleves, not the Ohio or any otherwhere meaning) neighbour for me)
I love Groningen, am a member of a whiskyclub in this city, so I come here regularly, my wife always brings me and picks me up again when I visit this club, since I have one rule, I never drink and drive a car at the same time. Since we live about 25 km outside of Groningen we are forced to use a car (since in our village is no public transportation) but yes, inside Groningen it is mostly bycicles! And did you know that there is a law in the Netherlands that when a car and a bicycle have an accident in the city limits the car is always wrong and will loose in court??? Thumbs up!

Groningen is my hometown, and I love that city. Living in Canada now, I miss that 'wakable' part the most, but in return I got the immense nature and wilderness.
Like I react on other videos as well; The Netherlands is not only Amsterdam. In my opinion Amsterdam is the most un-dutch city in the country.
I would love to take you around the country on a roadtrip! There is so much to see and explore

you've seen my town/village, and there they where cycling in the cold, so ....no car. It can be done, only the people in the usa have to go for it.......and that is the problem
The problem if citizens not being interested in their own city or town is incredibly common. People know about things that happen in far away country more than they know about what is happening a mile from them. I really recommend people to pay more attention to local politics. I am 100% certain there are events held in USA too when it comes to bigger changes, and a handful of people come.. mostly old people who have way too much time on their hands and too low education levels... Young people won't be present, they think it is cool to shun such things. There should be hundreds of people present, not fucking 12 who have really nothing to contribute.
Especially young people lose the most with the whole "politics is bullshit" and thinking it is uncool to care about THEIR society. You can start making changes before you are 18 already, and you are full member of community when you turn 18. That is when you should be present in local politics and know something about it.

YES! A reaction about my hometown! Groningen is indeed a walkable city, however public transport is pretty bad compared to other dutch / european cities.
Did it become worse? I lived there 20 years ago, but it was not bad at all as I remember. But did move to Emmeloord and public transport there is horrendous could have colored the memory.. a lot 😂

Yes, city in Dutch is stad, and people of Groningen call Groningen so: "stad". And yes, there are many bikes here, it's the fastest way to get around, next to walking in the center. And the oldest cities in the Netherlands are the once founded by the Romans, so some 2000 years old. That church you see around 12:50 in your clip, in the original at 6:25, is the A church, built around 1425, and I've worked there for many years as an all round technician, now retired and do give sometimes guided tours.
And we're not made of sugar, so we ride bikes in the rain.
The documentary was made for German television, that's why Benni speaks German.

It's an outrage but I've never been to Groningen. A friend of mine studied there and she always said how beautiful the city is. I should go there for sure.
11:40 wehn in 1990 they thought Groningen was 950 years old, artefacts where found pushing the date of the city as such even back further.. now it is asumed to be around 1250 years old, not the oldes still,, no one shouts that from the rooftops, I believe Nijmegen is one of the oldest.. Gronignen and its surroundings where the last of the Seven Provinces to join the Dutch Republic, and where the ones who prevente dthe "disaster year"to be the end of that republic. In 1672 The Republic was atacked by Spain from the South, England by sea, and Germany from the East.. Groningen kept its ground, the Bishop of Munster couldn't take the city after a year of siege.. The Groniners named him "Bombing Bernd" for his trademark of pummeling cities he wanted to conquer.. some of his bombs are still in facades of old buildings.. "Cafe 1672"has three of them in its front part.. Bernhard von Galen was his name.. Bernd for short.
12:06 the first part of Lets Gro..the Grote Markt.. well..september 2024 it is doen, no busses allowed in centre of town, only emrgency and delivery.. nothing else.. only pedestrians and bycicles.. and bloode mopeds/scooters.
The longer stretch of 3D maquette is how the new ringroad was made to be.. and no it is almost done, no trafficlights for through traffic, fly-overs, viaducts and bypasses with only specific exits ibn to the city proper.

Most of Groningen city center was demolished due to the liberation battle. Very sad and horrifying history. And about planning, citizens are always informed and consulted. This is called: polder model. If you disagree or have a opinion, speak up and the city council must consult.

I have been a lot in Groningen, and still come over there... but i don't know it is the most walkable city... there are a lot of bikes... and i mean a lot!!! You have to be verry carefull. Biking in Groningen is a challenge btw 😂 hope to see you soon in The Netherlands!!
The food looks like sweet potato fries with something like thin sliced ginger that is pickled. Never had that combination.
Groningen is my first choice for going on a getaway. Would love to live there but the jobs are not as abundand as they are in the west of the country. Apart from that it has everything.
The arrows where painted during the pandemic.. So people could have better distance. Also in School buildings and other building arrows on the stairs and so on.

Regarding cycles, the Netherlands has one advanytage as far as I know; It is mostly FLAT. Where I live we have a LOT of steep hills. An electric bike helps with that though.

In April 1945 the city was liberated by the Canadian army, which was the fiercest fighting in the Second World War for the Canadian soldiers because the city was heavily defended by the German occupiers.

You should see the RUclips channel Not just bikes the episode Driving in the Netherlands is way better. It shows that planning for cars is inferior compared to planning for people. Its not only good for pedestrians and cyclists. Its also much saver and better for driving.

I see it many times with people out of the USA. For them German is the same hearing as Dutch. And i myself speak German, but i found it difficult to learn years ago. In my dad's time he did to scribe in Gothic. A long time ago. Groningen is a great city for students. All cities with lots of students are full of life. Go on with your videos.

Usualy in car traffic free shopping area's there are a few hours in the morning where delivery trucks are allowed. At least this is the way in Eindhoven where I live. Also many stores are also accessible from the rear where there is some space to put a truck or van when unloading so there they only need acces via the main streets bot no parking or unloading area where people walk/shop.

Contrary to what most people think, dutch and german are not a supereasy crossover. Most germans think they can understand dutch untill you actually converse with them in dutch and viceversa. They have commonality for sure but are at the same time very different. And yeah, the yellowjacket dude is a dutch man speaking german.
If you don't know how to pronounce it. Sometimes it helps to divide the words. Like with Groningen you did put an extra N in it. Divide it and you see Gro-ning-en (divided to speak not grammar) . Your pronunciation was good petty for that extra N though.
You actually pronounced Groningen quite well. You only have to pronounce the first G different.
The name of that Brouwerstraat is Brewerstreet in English. Thus, because of its name it is obvious after what this street is named.

The guy, as mentioned by others is speaking German all be it with a thick dutch accent. Quite some people that live as close to the German border as Groningen do speak at least a bit of German besides the obvious Dutch and English.
The question about the 1945 bit. I'm no historian so I might be a bit off but as far as I know Groningen didn't suffer the heavy bombardments that completely devestated the city. However due to it's close proximity to the German border and it being at a great tactical location it was one of the first cities to be assaulted. Now I don't know if the assaults did a lot of damage but it was also one of the later cities to be rescued and I do recall (probably from some college session) that fights between Canadians and Germans were quite fierce so at that point I recon a lot of stuff in the city's center got damaged or destroyed..

Look up my brothers ww2 museum in Middelstum (Oorlogsmuseum Middelstum) Groningen might be the most attacked and surelly the most videographed and photographed city of all the ww2 era. Every remaining german fled trough Groningen to Delfzijl to escape to Emden. Delfzijl had a hell of a battle in the 3 weeks that followed. Bloody hand to hand dirty urban warfare which has not been seen before. And is barely documented, rest in peace to all parties involved in that bloody era.

No i always thought there was only my birthplace ,the place i live in atm. The village i do my groceries in . And the Eemshavenweg N46. Im a paver ( straatmaker for 20 years now) so so i know how things are done over here. And surely know a hell lot more than some kid or 20+ who never held a shovel. 🫣 And only know his stuff from books and endless studies that dont work half of the time. And yes take the yellow Groningse pavers (straatstenen) they look nice but the winter has shown otherwise. Those things get slippery as hell. We all voted no. But its pushed through by people like you who never done any heavy work. 😂 But im not judging. to each his own.
