  • I wanted to have a catch up with the Motorcycle instructor who got me though my A licence. I put the Idea past Mark of M&C Motorcycle Training, of making this video to answer some of your questions. He was very kindly agreed, I feel this discussion will be of great interest to many people. We cover many of the hot topics.

    Thanks. Relaxed, open topic convo. At least half of safe, enjoyable motorcycling is attitude. Relax and forbear the mistakes others make. Also, anticipate them.
    If you can anticipate others, the roads themselves are going to be safer. But don't invite problems by not owning the road space. Opposite side of road, vehicle may do a risky overtake past a cyclist (into oncoming traffic) because they can see space afforded by your motocycle position. Be present and properly placed, the risky overtake won't happen. Submissive on a motorcycle is unsafe and invites risk. Stay your course. Stay Aware.

    Good video. To add to the whole new bike too much protection thing I will say that when I did my cbt for the second time the school used really old 125s which didn't even have electric start and you had to rev the crap out of them to get them moving. Felt like riding a 50cc and made all the maneuvers hard mode difficulty especially since you had to kickstart the bike if you stalled

    I spoke to a DVSA assessor and yes the government have no plans to make it an automatic upgrade from A2 to A. However there is a consideration that you can go to an approved training school and do a course along the lines of an enhanced CBT style course to obtain your upgrade to A licence. He did admit that it could take ages to happen if they decide to do this.

    I did my cbt in two parts on two separate days I will admit I did fall when I was doing the test u turn in the center but on the road it was wonderful the feel was good the emergency stop was weird for me as the other rider that was with me on the road run the bikes break locked up even though the bike had abs. This ment that he had to take emergency stop on the bike I was usesing. The bikes we used had crash bars but only to cover the pegs which I liked.
    On the point of deul carage ways I have been on one on my Honda cbf125 it did 70 but man I would not advise it I have no ability to perform overtakes due to not having any more speed left and I’m 6f tucking got to 74.

    In relation to the guy who was unfortunately killed on his mod 1 @ St Helens test center. Poor fella, Christopher Evans, was doing an emergency stop. Instead of breaking he accelerated, probably in a moment of panic and confusion and drove into the fence at the end, cleared a 15 foot gap and hit a wall mid air. Absolutely horrific. I was on the slot before him and the celebratory picture i took with my instructor has him in the background, minutes before the crash. He died at the scene.

    Got my CBT yesterday. I'm 50... ish... Everyone at the course was over 30 for sure. It might be a skewed sample because I'm in Surrey, and it might be because my instructors, like Mark, take their job seriously and therefore (passively, if you like) discourage yoofs, but I reckon new old riders is kind of a thing now... Not sure why... midlife crisis in my case... I put my hands up...

    Regarding the person that failed by touching the white line in the U turn. I passed my mod 1 in 2018 with one minor fault when my front wheel just touched the line. The tester said that was ok but if I had gone on to it I would have failed

    Filtering on test.
    There's no requirement to filter on test and it's recommended not to as too much can go wrong, but please be aware that an examiner can abandon the test due to time constraints meaning having to retake the test incurring extra stress and cost.

  • @EDDIEcodename47
    @EDDIEcodename47 4 года назад +1

    Basically you'll need to start 12-13 so you can say: "I'm confident i passed in first try ..." . I rather buy a bike bigger then 125cc and practice out of traffic(I'm 37 92kg, newbie), then regret it later. And pay bigger price since 250cc are marginally expensive then 125cc's from where i come(both used).

    I wonder if you can clear something up. I'm doing a DAS later this year. Been reading on forum and some guys saying they failed mod2 for not using bus lanes, is this right ?

    • @spicy110
      @spicy110  4 года назад +3

      That dosn't sound right, at long as they were safely waiting in traffic I don't see not using a bus lane as a reason to get a minor let alone a major. I might be wrong just gut instinct

    • @unpotat7672
      @unpotat7672 4 года назад +2

      I had this on my DAS, was told throughout that you do have to use them. The reasoning being if there is a bus lane on the left and its signed as ok to use, then sitting in the right hand lane means you're driving on the right hand lane, which is supposed to be for overtaking/turning right. On my DAS test I moved over to the bus lane quite late one time and was told I was lucky as if I had stayed in the right hand lane I may have failed. It was also explained that they want to see that you know the rules of the road, and by not using a bus lane when its ok to use it may imply that you don't understand the signs and therefore may be unsafe.
      TLDR: We drive on the left side, right hand lanes are for overtaking, staying on the right with no traffic on the left can make it a fail.
      Personally after passing I don't really use them, not worth the risk to me, but for the test I did what they want when they want.

    • @stewartnorton6386
      @stewartnorton6386 4 года назад

      @@unpotat7672 Cheers for that this is pretty much what I read on a forum if I remember rightly the bus lane led up to a roundabout and guy was told he was in the wrong lane and was failed for it.
      I realize you have to take what you read on forums with a pinch if salt ( showing off/ people who feel unjustly wronged) but there seems to be a huge disparity from test centre to test centre and examiner to examiner. I've seen posts where people have put there foot down on mini roundabout in their mod 2 and passed and people who stopped to let a bus through and the examiner telling them there was no need to even though cars behind would have had to have stopped anyway due to the size of the gap.

    • @unpotat7672
      @unpotat7672 4 года назад +1

      @@stewartnorton6386 Yeah it definitely depends on the test center. Mine was in a city, and the route involved going out of it and back in, and I imagine they want as many people as possible to use the bus lanes to reduce congestion etc so it may be pushed for harder than others.
      In the end its not the worst though, Id just get to know the bus lanes around the test center/test area, and failing that they're sign posted anyway. You'll probably do the route beforehand as part of your training anyway so don't worry about it.
      After it all you've got your licence for life so :)

    I’m so confused, I’m 38 have a full driving license passed in May 2000. What do I need to ride a 125? I’m not interested in going any bigger, it’s for a 4 mile commute to work. Only 30 and 40 roads. If it’s just a CBT , do I have to do a new one every 2 years?

  • @NRD1985

    My wife had a geared 125 at home, did her CBT on a 125 scooter and was told as you say - "learn on the road". This is not good practice. She told me the school were testing someone else that day for their 4th CBT, the intstructor was keen to get going and to stop from wasting time , stuck her on a scooter. This was the 2nd session she paid for to gain her CBT. Beware a school that is more interested in money or selling you their gear or bikes than actually training people to be safe on the road.

    I done my CBT and passed but my bike skidded every time I braked but it was a old 125cc Honda is it due to abs or not.

    • @spicy110
      @spicy110  3 года назад +1

      Well if it had abs you would not lock up yes, however you do not need abs to stop a bike locking up. just do not press the pedal so hard or sharp, it should be a soft progressive press soon after you use the front. None of my bikes have ever had abs.

    If you want to take the test yourself, how can you get the bike to site? You wouldn't be insured to go to the training center, so okay you could take it in a van then you ride it, I doubt you are insured on the test either so how would that work? A2 to a1

  • @squirms
    @squirms 4 года назад +1

    Here's a question for all.
    Would you be willing spend more on the CBT (lets say £50-£100 more as an example) to get better, more advanced training to make you a better rider and more confident even if that means that it would take an extra day to complete?
    OR
    Would you stick with the current CBT either because it would be cheaper or just because you can get through it quicker?

    • @stewartnorton6386
      @stewartnorton6386 4 года назад

      Unfortunately as touched on in this video a higher price doesn't mean better training. There are a lot of schools that will take your money and do as little as possible and as long as you don't kill yourself they will pass you. Just recently over 100 "trainers" had thier licences revoked due to poor quality training and practices. From a personal point of view I don't think the CBT covers enough for people who have never ridden before. I'm not 100% sure of figures but from what I've read the average person takes around 30-40 hours of driving lessons before going for thier car test but I heard of people completing thier CBT in just 2 hours. Considering the more complex nature of driving a motorcycle and the increased danger it to me would make more sense to have a similar route to getting bike licence but allow the entry level size of bike to be increased so for example undertake 20 odd hours of training then do a test and be allowed to go straight to A2.

    i have a full car licence .and can drive motorbike up to 125cc .now i want to take test so i can carry a passenger on the bike .will i have to go through the highway code again or do i just have to prove i can drive the bike safely.

    • @spicy110
      @spicy110  Год назад

      I assume you have a cbt? Otherwise it's a 50cc max on a car licence. You need to pass the motorcycle theory test so yes to a point. You will then need a valid cbt and then you can take the mod 1 and mod 2. Depending on your age or wants that will be a A, A2 or A1 licence.

    Spicy, I'd love to see a series where you buy a cheap knackered bike, fix it and put it back together again. Your videos on how engines work were so good I'd like to see them expanded on, just took all the fairings off my bike for a final ACF50 coat and there's so many dangly bits, tubes and wires that I have no idea where they're going or doing.

    What gets me about teenages today is that they are such poor pedestrians. They don't know how to walk down a road safely. So they are probably less aware of 'roads' than I was 1000 years ago when I was a teenage. Plus you never see younger kids out on bikes these days.
