Fantastic, perfect lethal grappling skills by Mestre Pequeno, i m a bjj black belt but huge respect for Luta Livre, a grappling style i trained 3 year lot of time ago and awarded by my ex coach of a blue belt in Luta Livre, you are great guys!
As I comprehend Gracie JJ was more in focus on the "rich" or "well to do" people while Luta Livre was practiced more by the "poorer" aspects of society. Now rich and poor I only mean financial aspects. What, if any, response can I get from those that have experienced this first hand in Brazil ?
This was a reality in Brazil during the 80's and the 90's, specially in Rio de Janeiro, where most of the brillant fighters were born (for instance, Royce Gracie and Marco Ruas, both UFC champions). Both martial arts were during decades rivals, since Gracie Family, the founders of BJJ, dear to fight other martial arts fighters and some of them from "Luta Livre Esportiva"( direct translation: Freestyle Fighting). But, answearing your question, indeed BJJ has been more practiced by high society members, just because of the Gracie Family's influence, specially in Rio de Janeiro. They had, and they still have, for so long the monopoly of media to defend the idea that BJJ was the most efficient martial art in the world. And, just to say, that's why UFC was created in the 90's, to prove that the BJJ techniques were more efficient than any other in terms of self-defense. Luta Livre was practiced by the poorer, but not anymore: this martial art is being practiced even by BJJ fighters to increase their eficiency in MMA, for exemple.
How is this Luta Livre when they are doing x-guard sweeps, De La Riva, and others that are clearly jiujitsu? At this point, it's mixed grappling (or just grappling), not Luta Livre.
