  • Hey guys and gals. Some of you may remember my dissatisfaction when I got this guy in. I left it as a wall hanger for the last 5 or 6 months but now I'm trying to salvage this beast.

    I've bought many guitars from Thoman in Germany and always buy a hard case with the guitar to protect it in shipping. It is definitely worth the extra cost to protect the guitar.

    Was thinking of getting one of these so this is really useful, cheers. Was wondering whether you can't just string it up with the strings OVER the Bigsby bar without taking it off?

  • @wolfgange8322
    @wolfgange8322 6 лет назад +2

    I'm NOT shure your suggestions would make the guitar better... I own and play the BigTone for one year now, my trem works fine (!), no problems. My bridge is definitely not working or wandering. There are Bigsby trem systems with and without "downholding the strings", Holding them down increases the string pressure in case that their angle along the bridge is quite flat. If you demount the downholding part, the pressure gets weaker - but the part of the strings underneath the Bridge gets very long - that increases problems with sustain, tone and tuning. A Bigsby system without string downholder is (and should be) longer...

    the guy who uploaded this original video is probably dead now but a more obvious solution is to just remove the bigsby tremolo arm completely ......fixes both weight and string tension 👍

    Nice correctional video.
    2 points to add my twopenny worth.
    1. They are not tremelo’s. They are vibrato’s
    2. Locking tuners will stabilise the tuning. (Not intonation, thats a whole new ball game on a hollow body, centre block with vibrato fitted)
    Enjoy playing.

    The only time the bigsby knocks the bridge out of tune is when you actually use the term San since the whole point of a bigsby is to knock the guitar out of tune you seem to have a problem for every solution given your work table present I suspect that you just enjoy tinkering with things which is a nice way to be and a creative use of time but as my dad used to say to my uncle Matt when he would immediately dismantle every watch he bought or was givennback whennwatches were expensive IF ITS NOT BROKE DONT FIX IT .... unfortunately mate your condition is incurable but my uncle Matt helped defeat fascism and gifted you and me the freedom to live as we please in peace and community with our neighbours and family so you are in good company all the best and thanks for a very entertaining video greetings from Ireland John!

    You might want to try a _roller bridge_ before tearing apart the Bigsby to use it in a way that it was never _intended_ to be used.

    • @johnmilligan6605
      @johnmilligan6605 2 года назад +1

      It was intended to be used this way just not on this type of guitar basically you now have the correct model of bigsby for an arch top which is what Hb should have fitted in the first place!

    Hi a big hello from the UK Northern Ireland. I own 4 Gretsch guitars and a Gibson. I have a love affair with hollow body and semi-hollow guitars. I have been looking at these guitars with interest. I have always wanted a white guitar, I know this isn't a great reason to buy a guitar. Gretsch takes a massive price jump in the UK for a guitar like this. Their G5422TG model is £890 about $1074. I already own a G2410tg but I was looking for a guitar that I could have some fun with and not panic about changing pickups, pickguards, tuners etc.
    My question is, can this bridge be pinned? Secondly if you remove the Bigsby, could you use the holes to mount a tail piece like on a Gibson or the V shaped ones used by Gretsch? If you were to use an old style tail peice would this leave nasty holes all over the top of the guitar.
    What are your thoughts on the stock pickups, do you think a set of Gretsch filter trons or broad trons would work with the guitar.
    Enjoy your videos, thanks for posting!

  • @iamtubuler9266

    So did this make the bigsby stay in tune better as you never played it for us?
    Also does this hollow body feedback a lot at higher volumes and have you found any fixes for that if it does? Thanks for the great videos!

    You gave some good tips in this video. I know you really like Bigsby trems but I'm not so sure I would after hearing about the difficulty with changing strings and other issues. The guitar looks cool so hopefully you will get it play it more after the upgrades.

    • @NickintheStates
      @NickintheStates  7 лет назад

      It's not so bad once you learn the secret handshake when stringing. I'll make a quick video for how I do it. There's also a string spoiler of sorts that makes it easier but I don't like how it looks.

  • @Squazzoo68
    @Squazzoo68 7 лет назад +1

    Cool man! I'm glad you got that beast out and made it more playable! It certainly is a great looking guitar. The white model they have is beautiful! Is that a floating bridge? You were talking about using the bigsby in a gentle way, & then you mentioned Brian Setzer...he MUST have his bridge fixed, cuz he rails the shit outta his Bigsby! I've had my Gretsch 5120 for like 3-4 years, & unless I get it out and look at it, I can't remember if it's one bar or 2...think it's 2. Anyway, give her a chance, she'll grow on ya!

    • @NickintheStates
      @NickintheStates  7 лет назад

      The bridge is actually pinned. I thought it was floating proper but it is mounted. It has 12s on it stock and intonation now that the tension is less is spot on. I've head with 9's you can't get it intonated properly... but I'm old school in my belief that a big box should have proper strings on it. Setzer does have his pinned. He abuses that damn thing! I played this for a while this morning and it has a great tone to it. The only issue is something with grounding. a slight buzz that stops when I touch the strings. I bet the bridge isn't grounded. That'll be there for volume 2!

    • @Squazzoo68
      @Squazzoo68 7 лет назад +1

      Nick in the States yeah, mines not pinned either, but my luthier put some kinda wax or something under it to keep it in place. Swore to me it wouldn't hurt the finish. It's held up, I've been playing out with that guitar for years

    Hi Nick, I was thinking about buying the same guitar. Do you think removing the Bigsby and putting on a jazz tailpiece instead would be possible? The screw holes would have to be blocked but I think it should be OK - but then I've not seen the guitar in real life.

    • @NickintheStates
      @NickintheStates  7 лет назад

    • @NickintheStates
      @NickintheStates  7 лет назад

      So James you may have won. I just bought myself another 335 style guitar for giggles... and my rationale was that I could sell you my E35 to offset the costs!

  • @jim6442
    @jim6442 6 лет назад

    If you really want to fix it and don't want the strings popping out of the bridge there's a thing called a BigsbyFix. I put one on an Epiphone Wildkat with the same tremolo. It works perfectly. BUT, with the cost of Gretsch Streamliners now days you might as well just buy a Gretsch and be done (unless you already own the HB).

      I'm about to do the same with mine. I also like the sparseness of an SG. Flat plank of wood and some pickups. I may do this when I get home today as I haven't played it in a while.

    • @BadMotivator66
      @BadMotivator66 7 лет назад +1

      maybe leave the bridge part and take the arm and spring off (if you can). i found the mass of the bridge really added sustain. i couldn't take the arm off mine though (it's not an actual bigsby)

  • @StillLivinTheBlues

    That is such a pretty guitar. It's a shame you've had to do so much work on it to simply get it going. Has Thomann offered you a coupon for the damage/troubles?

    • @NickintheStates
      @NickintheStates  7 лет назад

      I did get a 10% credit from Thomann for the damage, which wasn't bad. This was initially a major disappointment of a guitar but now that the most glaring issue is solved it's growing on me. I still need to solve a bridge grounding issue and swap out the tuner buttons but it's much more enjoyable now.

    • @StillLivinTheBlues

    How about adding a white Pickguard or getting one cut to suit .Stick the redundant bar back on under the strings on for aesthetics if you still have that bigsby on there.
    HB should have installed the single bar shorter version bigsby on that model and not the double because the bridge is a floater . Gretsch only use the double bar Bigsby on models with a FixedBridge and all fixed bridge models have a center block inside the hollow body ( said to reduce feedback) which the bridge is screwed into . www.thomann.de/gb/gretsch_g5420t_electromatic_os.htm?ref=search_rslt_gretsch_388542
