Its self sustaining, fully automated and everything is within easy 5 mins travel. A city with zero carbon emission is a planet saving dream.
As for your argument that the money should be spent on the poor, well Saudi Arabia already takes good care of the poor. I have worked and lived there so I know it personally to be true. Way better than what I have seen in Canada and definitely way better than what I have seen over here in California. Plus such projects are vital to bringing in money to the country from other sources than petroleum (which is running out). Neom from my understanding aims to be a hub of commerce and research and development which means it will be the future money maker of Saudi Arabia when the oil dries out.
Also the line by itself is made to fit 9 million people. It's not for the super wealthy it's for everyone. (Or do you think they built it to house 9 million super wealthy people that they will gather and shove in there somehow?) That's about 2 million more people than the population of the capital city of Riyadh

This project is nothing but a stock market speculation bubble. Just look at their homepage, you have an "invest" button, does that look like any urbanist company ? A designer team made their powerpoint cool enough for the prince to sign their papers without any actual urbanist involved, the government turned it into a perfect occasion to make insider trading and get a cool image to all kids around the world.
I hate this project, not only because it's nothing but an investment scam, but because it makes people believe that a cool design and hope is enough for things to exists, it perpetuates this "ask no question" culture, it's pure dumb bullshit. There is a thousand incoherent points at all steps if this project, I would spend a day just listing them, it is gonna die as soon at it appeared, they will have got tons of money from speculation, and it will have made humans more gullible than ever.
Ask yourself questions. You have to right to be skeptical, you have the right not to know. Asking only makes you smarter, so do it shamelessly.
So if it's supposed to be zero carbon, how will they build it ? Once it is built, what about in 30 years, every technology might be obsolete, how much will it cost to rebuild it all new ? You said it's for desert people, but can their rent an appartement in a city like that ? Will there not be any millionaires with better offers ? Yea NOW the desert sky is splendid because there is no light pollution, but with a city like this, what will it change ? How can an artificial lake can't evaporate in a desert ? How could it be zero carbon if you have to go by plane as shown in the trailer ? Isn't that worse that having a normal car traffic ? What about food imports flies then ? Or even water importation to fill the lake regularly ? Or even the millions of tons of concrete that this project will need, doesn't just making the concrete rejects carbon already ? Since when can anyone invest into a city ? Is it really governmental or is it a way for a company to get investment ? Is the Prince part of the company ?
This project is just assuming humans are dumb, it's taking you for fools. Don't let you passively get lost into this, don't assume everything has been though before, all your questions are valuable.
That project would be great, if it was a 3D render, or a city in the last Villeneuve's sci-fi movie. But how the hell would you believe this is gonna be built ? Even in a video game that would look unreal ! Put your critical thinking on, damn !

People think neom is ambitious when Dubai was considered impossible in early 2000s. Compare the dubai of 2002 with 2022. 20 years and it's like a paradise in desert. Look at the maps or historical pictures of Dubai Peninsula. It was a fookin desert and arabs created architectural wonders in a short span.

Interesting to see where the Saudis will acquire the resources and necessary workforces from? Against this project, the constructions in Dubai in the last 3 decades and the infrastructure for the 2022 FIFA World Cup are „minor“ projects. Although having a quite young population themselves (mostly due to male guest workers from Pakistan, India, the Philippines etc.), the Saudi Arabs will simply not have sufficient people to build and maintain NEOM.
