    Mary Duff, this is the stuff of which angel's dreams are made. And of every choice, 'tis your heavenly voice I should hear when to rest I am laid. Mháire, Go mbeannai Dia duit.

    Magnificent! However, this may be considered 'a good old Irish song,' but it was written by Canadian schoolteacher George Washington Johnson for his student Margaret 'Maggie' Clark, whom he later married, only to have her die in their first year of marriage. James Butterfield later set the poem to music. Most consider it Irish, and no one sings it as well as CharleyTaylor, a well-known Detroit Irish tenor.

    Does it really matter where a song comes from? A great song is always enjoyable.
    The confusion may arise from the playright Sean O Casey using this song in one of his plays under the title "Nora".
    Whatever the origin I enjoyed hearing it again.
    Greetings from Ireland.
    Terry.

    From what I understand When You and I Were Young Maggie was the original/1st set of lyrics; the second set of lyrics were set to the same melody and all the lyrics changed including the name of the woman and title of song being changed to Nora; and it looks like this third version we are listening to in this video is the Nora lyrics but they changed the name ftom Nora back to Maggie. This is as best as I can understand since Google searches do not provide a complete answer about these songs

    How can anyone not love this Red haired Mary.
    What I am not sure of is the transcription of this line,
    “The chestnut blooms green through the glades Maggie”
    Oh what I’d give to see this lady in person.

    This is a great version of Maggie. She sings it in a good natural voice, which worked for me. I don't know who sang it better, Mary Duff or Maura O' Connell.?

      Correct. The original melody and words date to the 1860's. Maura's lovely words are newer.

    What is surprising about this episode is it was written by Robert Bloch. He was the one who wrote Psycho. In just a 21 minute episode it is cute, kooky, sad and funny. Has a strong Southern feel to it.

    "this bitch" is one of the finest singers of Ireland, absolutely note-perfect , and breathtaking , and as a Scots - Canadian I hate having to go to the defence of the Irish. But fair is fair, and idiots and bullies need to be addressed !!! . Consider yourself addressed, BellaDiabolical, and consider a new username, BellowingClasslessLout .Albainn gu brath agus Eirinn gu brath

    Someone put new words and stole an old melody from its Canadian roots. I was always told that anything good in Ireland was stolen from someone else and now I see what they meant.

    • @47Ronbo
      @47Ronbo 10 лет назад +5

      William, While you are right that these are new Irish words by Maura O'Connell to an old Canadian song, ironically, these new words fit the story better than the original words. The story (according to Wikipedia, at least) was that a Canadian man fell in love with his student, she became ill, he wrote the original words, and she died at a young age shortly after their marriage. However, his song is about their old age and her still being beautiful. In the version here "Our dreams they have never come true Maggie. Our hopes they were never to be." Much more in keeping with the real story.
