I recently got a 4 metre whip an I’m absolutely hooked on whips now, first time out on my local water I had an amazing day, with a superb mixed bag,Roach,Dace small Bream,Tench,Chub,Barbel, and two common carp one over 5 pound which was one of the the best scraps I’ve had on such a light setup.great on the canal,I take my whip, small landing net just in case,a plummet, forceps, and disgorger, and my maggots in a really small bag, absolutely brilliant bit of kit,I’m definitely getting a couple more lengths but 4metre is a great starting point.👍🏻
First thing you need to do Alan is get rid of the "small fish" tag. I've got the 6mtr version which retails at £159 so they're not cheap but "an angling shop" in Parkgate did it me for £150. The top three sections are telescopic so you can fish it at any length up to the full 6mtrs. The South Yorkshire Canal in Mexborough quickly drops to about 11' so my preferred method is a 1.25gr float (or bigger) fished with the Tom Pickering style "bulk and two droppers" to hand. It's a dream to fish with although loose feeding maggots is a bit naughty if there's more than a gentle breeze so you need to learn to use a catapult while holding the whip. It easily handles big roach, perch and skimmers plus a 5lbs carp last year that took me ages to land, much to the delight and encouragement of the workmen in the church graveyard opposite. I have a stonfo connector glued to my flick tip which I prefer but stonfo or dacron is up to the individual. Kayleigh Dowd has an excellent video on RUclips using the 7mtr version titled "River Whip Fishing - Get A Bite Every Cast" which shows how good they are.
They dont do a 6mtr version of this whip (acolyte pro tele whip) 5mtr is the longest, at around £85. Kayleigh is using a preston whip in the video. Maybe your'e thinking of the absolute.
Im in Sotland and have fished a whip as often as possible, caught 1lb plus roach, 6lb bream, tench, sea trout etc etc on a whip. Ye have no ideahow strong they are Nd you feel every knock, elastic is boring 😂
