Painting Cactus with Watercolors

For painting tutorial with audio, see my recent video here: • How to Paint Succulent... In this video, I will show you how to paint a cactus with watercolors. ⇩ Read below for painting steps ⇩
Painting Steps:
1. Sketch the plant on watercolor paper lightly with a pencil. Another suggestion is to draw first on plain white paper and then transfer that drawing to the watercolor paper. You can do that by shading the back side of the paper with your pencil. Then trace the picture with a ballpoint pen.
2. Add water all over the painting.
3. Mix a light grayish blue by combining blue with a little bit of green and yellow. Lightly shade the white pot.
4. Paint the cactus with green and yellow.
5. Using gray (mix blue + red + yellow) add layers to the white pot. Keep the white where the light hits the object and add gray for the shadow areas.
6. Add darker blue/green at the bottom of the plant.
7. Alternate between bluish and yellowish green to paint the cactus ribs.
8. Let the painting dry before adding any details. I'm using a blow dryer to speed up the process.
9. Continue adding layers of darker shades of color with a smaller brush.
10. Paint cactus needles with beige and darker green colors.
11. Add any other details and more depth, if necessary.
12. That's it. We're done!

Fluid Easy Block Fluid Watercolor Blocks Size: 8 x 8 in (amzn.to/2FEe0Zx) - not too expensive, perfect for traveling, great quality paper
Mongoose Imitation Brush by Roubloff, size #7
Synthetic brush, size #2
I haven't found good links or equivalent products for these, these brushes are medium in softness/firmness, not too soft

Hi lovely, I'm just coming across your wonderful videos. I live in London but am from Arizona, so cacti really make me feel at home. I have never painted with watercolor though and came across your video for inspiration. I was wondering if you would consider entertaining a small request (that's going to sound a bit silly). There's a type of rare cactus originated in Japan called Myrtillocactus geometrizans 'Fukurokuryuzinboku' - otherwise known as the "boob" cactus- I think if you were to Google it you would see why! While I'm in quarantine I'm looking after my very sweet, 81, British neighbor who lives on the bottom floor. I'd love to paint a small boob cactus for him as I know it would cheer him up and add some humor in these dark times. I cannot find a painting of this cactus anywhere (watercolor or not), so if you have the time and will, I would be delighted to see a video / tutorial of you painting this cactus. I'd love the inspiration and I'm sure such a video would bring a smile to other people's faces as well. Thank you for listening. Adi

Can I use any paper for this bc I don't have watercolor paper.

It would be more challenging to paint, but it's still doable. You can try. The watercolor paper makes it easier to paint, easier to remove mistakes, the paper won't warp as much, etc. If it's possible, pick thick or cardstock paper that would be closer to the watercolor paper texture. I would love to know if it worked for you when you'll try it out, so let me know.
