  • Mastercard is the second largest card network in the U.S., accounting for more than a quarter of all purchase volume using a payment card. As the world transitions to a more cashless society, Mastercard’s value has continued to soar. Shares of the company have seen nearly 100% gain over the past 5 years, outperforming American Express, Discover and even Visa. So how is Mastercard able to generate so much revenue and how does it set itself apart from the rest of its competitors?

The biggest risks MC and V now face is losing the debit portion of their business. 2%++ swipe fees to merchants, which funds reward points and miles to card holders, is an exorbitant charge to process a payment. Merchants are now pushing back with surcharges to pay with a card. Since people are not going to return to paying with cash, alternative systems like Zelle, CashPay, and even the prospect of digital currency will threaten to take away the non-credit (debit) transactions. Time will tell.

In my country, all banks issue MasterCard and visa card but there is an In App QR payment method backed by National bank's Blockchain system. This allows interbank transfer at no cost bypassing MasterCard and visa, and merchant get 100% of the payment. So right now, not many merchants are accepting payment by MasterCard and Visa, only big shopping malls or brand name stores do

It’s typically the opposite in Canada, MasterCard has semi-exclusivity deals with Costco and No Frills, and their interchange fees are typically marginally lower than Visa. That said they have the fewest card offerings among the Big 5, with only BMO offering Debit and BMO and RBC offering credit (and RBC also issues Visa cards). Federal Reserve may soon lose control of interest rates, claims Heresy Financial. This comes as a result of the United States government's intention to embark on a $1 trillion borrowing spree. This might cause the banking sector to lose so much liquidity that rates spiral out of control and are no longer in the control by the federal reserve. I'm sorry to say that despite investing, I lack the mental capacity to evaluate each company's performance and decide whether or not now is a good moment to acquire stocks. Be aware that the payments systems are changing rapidly. Instant payments solutions are growing fast. See Brazil for example. In less than 2 years, PIX has become our main payment and transfer systems. It's free for individuals, runs 24x7 and it's accepted anywhere by anyone, from individuals to large companies.

It will be interesting to see if China UnionPay will really try to go international on a large scale in the next several years. Just that brand by itself has a giant user base from China alone.
