Ellen Barkin is the name of the actor who played Al Pacino's assistant. She's been active since the 80s, and had a breakout role as a murder suspect in "Sea of Love"...starring Al Pacino! Other good movies to see her in are "The Big Easy" with Dennis Quaid and "This Boy's Life" with De Niro & DiCaprio. A personal favorite of mine is "Johnny Handsome" with Mickey Rourke, Morgan Freeman and Forest Whitaker.
I really like Johnny Handsome. Hearkening back, the first time I saw Ellen Barkin was in the period piece, Diner, with Kevin Bacon, Tim Daly, Steve Guttenberg, Paul Reiser and Mickey Rourke. She played Daniel Stern’s fiancée. Slice of life film set in the late 50s from Barry Levinson. Everyone was really, really good and she’s really good.
The ending at the airport with Clooney, Pitt and Damon was funny because the way they all said goodbye to each other were references to the actors real lives. For example when Danny told Rusty to “settle down, have a couple of kids” he was referring to how Brad and Angelina Jolie had recently adopted and conceived like 3 or 4 kids at that point.
the Spanish was not the worst but it was heavily accented, he very much sounds like someone that learned Spanish as a second language and doesn't speak it very often
George's comment about Clooney being born in a suit gave me a chuckle. The dude was sorta born to be an actor. Anyone that could perfectly deliver the line, "That's the bravest thing I've ever seen a vegetable do," was destined for greatness.
Yes the diamond thing is a real hotel thing. It's similar to the star system but for smaller sized hotels. To qualify for 5 stars you have to have a certain number of rooms, restraunts etc.. that the diamond system doesn't.
The blond cougar is Ellen Barkin. A great movie that she was also in is Sea of Love, where she starred with Al Pacino and John Goodman. I love Ocean's 13. I live in Nevada and I can confidently state that the bit with the first 'earthquake' where none of the gamblers leave is 100% accurate.
At the end the Night Fox's outfit is Iron Man colored because it's camouflage. If you go back you can see that he was in the scene perfectly blended in with the backdrop.
My aunt ran the cleaning crew at Ballys for several years when it opened, and was directly in charge of the upper floors where the celebs and high rollers stayed. She loves these movies. She also said Charles Barkley and Hulk Hogan were extremely generous tippers. Minimum $100 for every day they stayed. She also said Michael Jordan was cheaper than a grandma and a giant pain in the azz. Her workers drew straws to see who had to "deal with his nonstop blubbering bulls**t" lol.
** I saw a doc or some program about the making of this film, and the woman who plays Ms Sponder was not working in film much during the time this was shot and when she got the call from the producer Jerry Weintraub, she broke down in tears she was so grateful.. and in the end she put in a great performance.
She did a couple of good roles after this on TV like Animal Kingdom and another one that i've forgot the title where she's a Police departement Chief or something.
My favourite little detail from this film is that they might've turned Terry Benedict into a good person at the end, completely by accident. Also, there were plans for Steven Soderbergh to make an "Ocean's Fourteen" where everyone would be brought back for one final film, but he refused to make it after the passing of Bernie Mac as it wouldn't be the same without him.
They might have turned his public persona into one, but not Terry at his core. They also put him in an awkward position to counterattack: now, Terry has a TON of publicity on him. Makes it harder to engage with any level of organized crime if a ton of eyes are on you.
Couple of Godfather references: when Ruben wakes up he basically quotes Don Corleone from the scene where he learns Sonny was killed on the causeway. Also: interesting that Andy Garcia was Al Pacino’s nephew in Godfather III and he is the key to taking him down here.
*Nephew, not son. I did read that he was intended to be the best part of all of the Corleones. Vito's intellect/prediction, Sonny's anger, and Michael's ruthlessness. After I read that, it made me look at the character again and pick up on all of those things.
I remember watching the original Ocean's Eleven, staring "The Rat Pack". There a diamonds rating system, but they don't actually get diamonds. He would buy the diamonds, himself. Those drills are what they used to build the tunnels under the English Channel. Elon Musk is using them to build a transportation loop under Las Vegas.
George Clooney's father is Nick Clooney, who was a journalist, smaller market TV news anchor, and TV presenter, and if you see him, you'll see where George gets his looks from. His aunt Rosemary Clooney was also a famous singer back in the day.
The Brody is messed up cuz its the nickname for the giant prosthetic nose, named after the actor Adrian Brody. My ex had a huge crush on him, so that royally pissed her off. 😂😂😂
That's funny! I never knew it was a jab at Adrian Brody. While watching today, I wondered if it was the prosthetic for Crispin Glover's nose, which inflamed some legal issues back in the 90s.
The Mormon Twins are always my favorite in these movies 😁 I have a older brother. Its so rare for a Hollywood movie to get the "brother" dynamic correct but those two always knock it out of the park! 🤣😂🤣😂
Another Godfather reference was when Danny tells Bank "What I want, what's most important to me.." That's from Michael Corleone in the Italian restaurant talking to Solozzo & McCluskey.
March 1999, on the south coast of England (not even 10 miles from where I grew up), an entire lighthouse and lodgings were moved 55 feet back from the cliff. They *said* the technique they used would mean it could be moved again, eventually, with minimal disruption... but 50 feet of cliff erosion has happened in 25 years, and I don't think they thought it would be needed again so quickly
they moved a heritage 15 story building down the road 50 meters because a overpass freeway would otherwise reuire it to be demolished, they jacked it up and moved the building a few inches an hour, the ramp leading into the building had to be adjustable because they didnt even need to empty the building or stop use, people were still working in it as they moved it, once all the prep work and lifting was done, the move down the road took a week
The actress who played Sponder is Elen Barkin. This isn't her first movie with Al Pacino. They were leads in Sea of Love. She was also in The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension, with Peter Weller, Jeff Goldbloom, and John Lithgow. The Big Easy, with Dennis Quaid, Ned Beatty, and John Goodman. Dro Dead Gorgeous, with Kirsten Dunst, Amy Adams, and Brittney Murphy. She also starred in a gender swap movie titled Switch, with Jimmy Smits, Lorraine Bracco, and JoBeth Williams.
Between 1850 and 1870 the ENTIRETY of downtown Chicago was raised to make room for modern (for the time) sewers after a major cholera epidemic swept through the population as a result of stagnant water caused by the city's low-lying location on the shore of Lake Michigan. Buildings were routinely moved to higher elevation between 2-6ft, whilst other buildings were relocated entirely, shipped down the streets as a single unit to new sites several blocks away, with people still working and dining inside.
In the mid 19th century, they lifted the entire city of Chicago. Like, literally raised buildings and sidewalks up as the city had sunk over time and was causing issues.
Btw, they built the entire casino on two soundstages on the Warner Bros lot. The casino entrance was built where the hospital entrance for the TV show "E.R." once stood, also on the backlot.
@24:15...For those who are NOT casino SAVVY.. 11 m. is so specific too they asked each other early in the movie if they would do it for 10 talking about collateral dmg.and old guy says i would for 11. such good writing and setups for little jokes.
The funny thing about Damon’s father is they say his name in Ocean’s 11, Bobby Caldwell, and in 13 if you pay close attention his father is called Agent Caldwell throughout the movie. So you can actually figure out it’s him before the reveal
The actress is Ellen Barkin. And yes. She IS great. Watch her in another movie with Al Pacino, Sea of Love, in Switch, Mad Dog Time, and an earlier and one of the all time great movies, Diner. Keep up the great work guys. You’re killing it.
I'd hoped you'd recognise the borrowed lines from The Godfather. Danny confronting Banks is dialogue inspired by the diner scene and Ruben's dialogue after he comes to, is inspired by Marlon Brando's dialogue after he returns from the hospital after getting shot.
Bob Einstein (who played Linus' father) is best known to the general public for his character Super Dave Osborne whom he started portraying in the mid-'80s. In the industry however, he is far more lauded as being a prolific comedy sketch writer in the '60s and '70s. Particularly on the Smothers Brothers show. Cheadle's daredevil motorcycle stunt character in this movie is a nod to Super Dave Osborne as that character was a spoof of Evel Knievel.
During my first run at Ocean’s 13, I was totally invested from the moment that Ruben was lying in the hospital fighting for his life. And then it was revealed that Al Pacino’s character was the man responsible for what happened to Ruben, and I wanted to see his downfall so bad. This should be a big lesson to people who want to own and run a casino: don’t be an asshole to your customers/guests. Cause it’s bad for business in my POV. Overall loved y’all’s reaction.
This is one of the most uplifting movies out there despite being a real roller coaster of emotions. The plan and the reveal over the course of the movie is so well thought out it is pure joy to watch.
Suave... that's the word I'd use for the 3 Ocean's movies :) ... This one is my favourite of the 3 and the rewatch value is so damn good ! Honestly, I love Brad Pitt's looks extra handsome in these movies with those suits and shades... and he's always eating something :D
Talking about breaking through wall to get to a safe reminded me of the first time I saw that strategy in the1958 Italian film Big Deal on Madonna Street, which was remade in 2002s Welcome to Collinwood, starring George Clooney, Sam Rockwell and William H. Macy.
You guys are my favorite reaction channel I love how you both have different reactions. You have a classy, emotional, and logical down to earth view on every episode. So fun every time!
They don’t throw away the dice! lol The dice are taken off the table periodically and calibrated to make sure they’re a) not damaged and b) haven’t been tampered with in some way. Then they are put back into rotation again. Same thing happens with the roulette ball and cards (which they check for marks.
The 3 Minutes 30 seconds should be enough in this case since remember as Danny said this is a casino/hotel for Whales (People with "F" you money). Every bet is from a "high level" and no limit bets could range from the ten thousands to millions per bet depending on the game. And it was also mentioned for opening night Bank ensured that the guests invited are people that can could ensure he clears $500,000,000 million in his first quarter or else he'll be dumped out of his own casino from the "unfriendly majority" from his board of executives.
I enjoyed this one. A step up and back to old form I'd say. Even though the ending in Oceans 12...the whole meet-up at the end... would have been a perfect way to end. David Paymer as "Very Unimportant Person" stole every scene he was in. Hilarious.
32:35 OK, Mr. or Mrs. Simon PeggedMe - you now know what you have to change your Patreon username to for the next video. Let's see how attentive George is being on that day.
The reason the drill cost so much is that it's meant to be the drill used in the construction of the Channel Tunnel. The 20 mile long rail tunnel that goes under the seafloor and allows the EuroStar train to go from England to France. At the time it would have been the only piece of machinery available to them to simulate the earthquake due to its size.
My favorite one. I could put this on anytime to watch directly or have on in the background, and I'm always satisfied. P.S. George Clooney loved poking fun of this movie when it came out, especially because his other movie that year, Michael Clayton, was running all over the awards circuit.
The second one gains a lot on rewatch, once you know the plot you can fully enjoy the dialog and acting without the distraction of the overcomplicated plot.
Ellen Barkin who plays Banks assistant has been around for years. One of my favourite films and apparently not that well known, is a comedy called Switch. Well worth watching if you can.
If you didn’t have plans to you should add “Oceans 8” which is the most recent movie in the series. It’s an all female team staring Sandra Bullock and to many more to name. It has the same feel as 13 and is really good. It’s also a good idea to watch the original “Oceans 11” from 1960 staring Sinatra and a lot of the Rat Pack.
Indeed.. got a set of poker cards from the Stratosphere casino with clipped edges so they could easily spot it if you tried to bring those back to the table.
Have you seen White Collar? It’s a 6 season long TV show that I think you might enjoy. It’s got a little more social engineering and suave behavior than similar shows
I live down the street from the Taipei 101 building, which currently has the fastest elevators in the world. It takes only a few seconds to go from level 1 to level 88. They are actually faster going up than going down.
20:00 you laugh, but there's an actor in Argentina with just that nose, for real, his name is Diego Peretti, and he played the team's infiltrator in a heist series much akin to Mission Impossible or The A-Team. in one of the episodes he goes over his many alter-egos in rapid succession changing accents and mannerisms... legendary stage actor.
Love this film, maybe even more than the first two. It’s so much fun and just enjoyable every time. When you have great writing, great Directing, and an All Star cast, you get movie magic.
Now for little reason I will recommend Sea of Love with Al Pacino and Ellen Barkin(the manager) a really good and steamy detective thriller. I haven't seen Ocean's Eleven, but have seen Twelve and this one. Twelve was a snoozefest, this one is okay I guess but my problem is I never felt anything really, because everything just went their way all the time.
The "earthquake machine" was just a small tunnel borer, and those are real. Of course they normally take more than one person to operate, and cost tens of millions to rent. But drive one into the foundations of the hotel and it could work as shown.
23:40 When it comes to casino equipment measured for fairness in the hands of players, you want to swap them out (dice and cards) rather frequently, so that players cannot have a chance to mark or otherwise modify it to gain an edge. That's why earlier, the dice were in that spinning machine? Measured and tested to ensure uniform weight throughout the cube, to make sure a particular number doesn't come up more often than it should. If a player nicks or scratches it in the course of being a Craps shooter, this disturbs the weight distribution and can cause non-uniform performance, so they're VERY rigid and strict about it.
The biggest problem with OCEAN’S 12 is that Julia Roberts’ character looks like “Julia Roberts”, but NONE of the others look like their real life counterparts 😤 #dumb
I haven't been to Vegas but I worked casinos in Biloxi Mississippi and New Orleans louisiana, and they bringing fresh dice and fresh decks of cards every shift change or whenever the pit Boss thinks it may be necessary. In fact many places you can buy casino used cards with holes punched through them so they cannot be reused in the casino. They are pretty much brand new but have a hole in them and are cheaper.
Al Pacino played the bad guy on a super alpha level, and everybody else did a great job acting. Perfectly edited, great humor, awesome style, this is the best caper movie ever.
I like this one a lot more than Oceans 12. Pacino is great. If you want to see older Pacino having the best time ever - and Keanu Reeves - I HIGHLY recommend *The Devil’s Advocate* . It’s a wildly entertaining thriller.
The 'earthquake' machine actually isn't as sci-fi as it seems. It's easy to miss, but they explain that each one is a drill that dug the Chunnel from each side, Britain and France.
"You shook Sinatra's hand, you should know better. "
Best running line in the movie
It’s also a callback to the original Ocean’s Eleven film which stared Sinatra and the Ratpack.
In Oceans Eleven they made an EMP.. In Oceans Twelve? They lifted a building. And in Oceans Thirteen? They made an Earthquake. These fellas ARE literally disasters. Lol
"I know people who can really hurt"
"I know all the people you know. They all like me more than you."
I love that exchange so much 😂
The guy who plays Matt Damon's dad was famous for playing a fake stuntman named Super Dave.
Rip
To the general public, that was definitely his claim to fame. In the industry he was probably much more well regarded as a comedy writer.
Also funkhauser on curb your enthusiasm

And it was also mentioned for opening night Bank ensured that the guests invited are people that can could ensure he clears $500,000,000 million in his first quarter or else he'll be dumped out of his own casino from the "unfriendly majority" from his board of executives.
Super Dave Osborne is Linus dad he was a comedy fake stuntman from the 80s
RIP Marty Funkhouser
Plus, he’s the brother of Albert Brooks.
Now do Logan Lucky!!! Another great heist movie by the same director
The GILROY is named for a town in California named Gilroy, known for their annual Garlic Festival.
My favorite one. I could put this on anytime to watch directly or have on in the background, and I'm always satisfied.
P.S. George Clooney loved poking fun of this movie when it came out, especially because his other movie that year, Michael Clayton, was running all over the awards circuit.
The Night Fox had Iron Man colors on cause he was literally blending in with the Red and Yellow Lights on the building. 27:16
The trope of breaking in next door to get to the real goal was introduced by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle -- The Redheaded League -- :)
The "earthquake machine" was a tunnel drill. The same thing, only smaller, that they used to build that Chunnel tunnel, from England to France.
Linus' dad goes all the way back to the first movie, Danny introduces himself to Linus as a "Friend of Bobby Caldwell."
The second one gains a lot on rewatch, once you know the plot you can fully enjoy the dialog and acting without the distraction of the overcomplicated plot.
Elevators in the Willis Tower, Chicago, operate as fast as 1,600 feet (488 meters) per minute
The Spanish is actually pretty good in the Mexico scenes 😂
Ellen Barkin who plays Banks assistant has been around for years. One of my favourite films and apparently not that well known, is a comedy called Switch. Well worth watching if you can.
If you didn’t have plans to you should add “Oceans 8” which is the most recent movie in the series. It’s an all female team staring Sandra Bullock and to many more to name.
It has the same feel as 13 and is really good.
It’s also a good idea to watch the original “Oceans 11” from 1960 staring Sinatra and a lot of the Rat Pack.
Simone said "cake or death?!"
Yep
Marry me❤😂🎉
21:57 - she stared in a 90s comedy "Switch". Pretty fun movie.
Best part of this movie was all the Godfather lines thrown around--thought maybe you guys would pick up on that.
Finally, a unaltered pic of Simone in the thumbnail.
"What I want. What's most important to me..."
Michael to Solozzo.
Danny to Banks
Typically all the dice and cards and such are resold by casinos. They clip or mark them in some way so they can't be reused again!
Indeed.. got a set of poker cards from the Stratosphere casino with clipped edges so they could easily spot it if you tried to bring those back to the table.
I Found all three Oceans movie's by curiosity, and I found that the second just felt soooo out of world. And then this third one saved it for me.
20:00
you laugh, but there's an actor in Argentina with just that nose, for real, his name is Diego Peretti, and he played the team's infiltrator in a heist series much akin to Mission Impossible or The A-Team.
in one of the episodes he goes over his many alter-egos in rapid succession changing accents and mannerisms... legendary stage actor.
13:02 Super Dave!!
You don't know who Ellen Barkin is?? Well then You just need to watch "Switch" from 1991. ;)
For changing out the dice (and cards, and chips), they then sell them in the gift shop as “authentic, floor used) casino products
I love Eddie Izzard. Super funny and you get a history lesson too
Fender Rhoades!!! I'm a goddamn American Icon!!!
I love the attention to detail, they mention the 11 million they were giving the guy early in the movie.
"In caaaaaaaaaaaaaash." is my most regularly used quote form this entire franchise.
This movie is so good I might actually like it better than the first one lol
The Mexico plotline is hilarious
Slot machines at the airport, yep, that's definitely Las Vegas 😄
I love that George is an avid Stormlight fan.
