Amitava, Hi! 😃💐 thank you for your questions and .... a very warm welcome to my channel, I have not seen you in my comments before, so... WELCOME! 😍 when I use the term aggressive fertilizing, I mean too much fertilizer. Especially seeing as they dry out so quickly, there is no time for them to absorb the fertilizer. So, the minerals build up on the lava rock and the roots, causing them to burn. To answer your other question, yes, I water them every day from Spring through Autumn. During the summer 2 or 3 times a day depending on how hot the wind is. I use very little fertilizer now, 20 ppm if that. Most of the time, they are getting fresh reverse Osmosis water. During the winter, I water every other day, depending how high the humidity is and how cold the temperatures may be. I need them to dry out before the evening, so I water very carefully. I hope this helps. 😃 Let me know if you have any more questions, I will be happy to answer as best as I can. Thank you again, for being here and for watching 🙏🏼🌸
I live in the U.S. and the state that I live in has very high humidity with temperatures in the low nineties and upper eighties. My tolumnias really enjoy being outdoors in this climate. I hang them in trees and they don't get direct sunlight. When I started growing tolumnias I had the same problem that you did with the fertilizer I was using. I actually killed one plant and another was on its way out. I purchased just two plants when they had an orchid show in my city. I was just going to quit trying to grow them since I killed one. A friend of mine who is an expert on African violets told me to try her method of growing plants. I tried her method and I haven't killed a plant in over ten years. I water with distilled water and I use an organic fertilizer since an organic fertilizer won't burn the roots. I also have my twenty tolumnias mounted on wood. Every day I spray with distilled water and fertilize once every two weeks. I bought a water distiller for seventy-five dollars. I find that tolumnias grow better when they are mounted.
HI 😍💐 welcome! I have not seen you here before, so a warm warm welcome and a massive thank you for being here, for watching the video, leaving such a detailed comment. I appreciate that very much! You are right about their climate preferences, as well as their preferences for being mounted. I do not have the ideal climate for them, so I thought that placing them on lava rock in a basket would be as close to mounting as possible. If you are interested in what my conditions are year round, here is a video that talks through the seasons ruclips.net/video/hB9m3LU-8SM/видео.html my biggest issue, since this video aired, is that my tolumnias had a scale infestation, which ... well, I am fighting for the survival of each one that I have left. If it had not been for that, incl the cold temps in the winter following that, they would be doing so much better. Most of mine are in a form of set back and some have declined to the point of no return, unfortunately. I have RO water, have reduced the fertilizing to less than 100ppm and flush the baskets with plain RO water as a slow mist on the daily, several times a day, depending on how quickly they dry out. I was hoping that this season, the ones I am desperately trying to grow to strength, would do better but the set back is worse than I thought. Still fighting though 😃🤞🏼 I hope you had a wonderful Monday and once again, welcome! 🫶🏼❤️🌸
Hi Ian! 🤗💐 it still is, yes... it was a close call with how I was treating them last year! Too much of the good stuff, nearly took them out, so, I am hoping that this year they can grow and get their strength back. I have 4 empty baskets though 😬 not all of them lost their occupants through the winter, but, now, there are 4 baskets.... if I can get the ones I have left to recover this summer, then, maybe next year I will fill those baskets again 😃 Thank you so much for taking the time to watch, Ian 🌸 have a relaxing Sunday evening! 🌸
Quite the gaggle indeed!! Well put my friend!! Thank you so much again for letting me join into this one! Tolumnias are amongst my favorites and this was so much fun to make! Lovey little collection you have! I cannot imagine growing them in semi hydro.... that has to be a very delicate balance! I would be interested to see that. So good to hear others have struggled with these little plants as well. They are “tough” plants but as you’ve said, cause them to stress snd they go down so fast. I killed my first one overwatering and over feeding as well. And continued to slowly torture the rest until about a year ago... Anyhow, so much great information in this video. You always do such a fantastic job explaining and describing the how’s and why’s. You really do have a fantastic wealth of knowledge and it is such a treat for you to share. The leaf color tips and information here is incredible. I am eager to see how your plants bounce back over time. I’m sure you’ll do well with them and they will reward you! I love the little hanging trellis area you grow them in. I would love to be able to grow outdoors.... your blooms look so lovely in the dappled sun. I look forward to seeing more about your collections progress later this season! Thanks again for sharing all the lovely info and for hosting this awesome care collab!! Happy growing my friend!!
Hi! 🤗💐 thank YOU, first of all, for taking time to join in! I have to get to your video, and will do so after I have done the YT housekeeping! I want to crack the SH code with these guys, but I won't be switching them all to that set up IF I am successful one day, (no shelf space in the winter!) but... it would be interesting to be able to do it. It can be done, of that I am sure. Can you not grow outdoors for most of the year in NC? I would have thought that was possible, or... are you in an apartment, I am sorry, I do not remember. Getting so many channels together is awesome and the time people invest to do their videos, absolutely cool!! I appreciate your willingness to take part! Hope that you had a great weekend and wish you a positive start to the new week! 🌸
Your tolumnias look very nice and i am sure they will do well further on, like the setup with those beautiful baskets. I really need to get some more tolumnias 😁 Thanks for your invite for the carecollab, i really enjoyed participating as always 😁 Have a nice day Nina, stay safe and happy growing 😊
Maykel, hi!! 🤗💐 I think I caught them just in time! One can never have enough Tolumnias, I am totally with you there!! I put a video out there, and you jumped on board, Maykel! My thanks go to you for joining in, so very much appreciated! 👍🏼 How is the Ninja Hive doing? I am so stoked about having a hive named after me 😬 had a great day so far, finally a sunny day without gale force winds! I could film by my hedge again 😅 You, stay safe as well! I hope that you are feeling nothing and all is going well. Thank you so much for everything 🥰🌸
Hi Sandie 🤗💐 I am sure that they will come to your neck of the woods soon... they are far more popular than people think and for sure, your sources will make them available... they have to! Be silly if they didn't! Thank YOU for taking the time to watch, Sandie! Enjoy your Sunday 🌸
Hi Steven 🤗💐 now that I just managed to back peddle on my excessive love bombing them and almost killing them, I think they will be ok! They certainly look better than they did same time last year. 🤪 close call! Thank you so very much for spending time out of your Sunday to watch this video... I really appreciate your time and hope that you have a relaxing day, Steven 🌸
Hi Helen 😍💐 so good to see you again!! I hope that you are doing well 🤗 they look so much better now, Helen! Some have forgiven me, 3 are still on the edge, but I have a blooming alley tour airing tomorrow, so, if you are interested to see what they look like now, I show them for a little bit in that video. Thank you so much for watching, Helen!! 🌸
Love it! I’m having a Tolumnia phase and they are thriving here in Florida. I do water every day with well water and fertilize every week with a light application of 20-20-20 and 10-30-20 on the 4th week. So far so good. You are absolutely right. Salts settle and kill the roots. I like to do a good rinse down a day or two after feeding to avoid settlements. Great video!👍🏼
Hi Nel 🤗💐 good to see you, thank you so much for watching and your kind comment! I cannot tell you why I thought I was growing Tolumnias to get them to the size of vandas?? 🤦🏼♀️😅 but... mine are looking so much better now than they did this time last year, and I have piped down to 'next to nothing', the occasional 100ppm and then rinse off before they get a chance to dry, and some seaweed here and there. I have added you to the CareCollab list for future Tolumnia CareCollab videos, if you are interested. It must be wonderful to be able to grow them to the point that they are thriving! I hope that this summer, I can get their strength back and then say that mine are thriving next year. 😃 goals! Have a wonderful evening, Nel 🌸
@@NinjaOrchids yeah i just started with them and I’m treating them the same as my other hanging orchids. What helps out is that I keep them outdoors and always watered. Now that they have a little bit of sphagnum moss, I make sure it’s completely dried before I soak them again. So far they look strong and very healthy. Once you let me know on the Tolumnia CareCollab, I’ll put a nice video together. 👍🏼
Hello lovely lady! 🤗💐 I saw that you had gone live earlier today, and I am so sorry that I could not make it... or was it yesterday? I hope that you had a good time! Thank you so much for taking the time to watch. I think that I will have a better season for my little Tolumnias! Too much love is, not always, a good thing 😬 have a wonderful start to the new week 🌸
Hi Michelle 🤗💐 I am sure that blooms are on the horizon for you! Your tolumnias are not looking too shabby and you have done a great job getting them to hang around considering the size you had to work with when they arrived 👍🏼 Have yourself a beautiful Sunday, Michelle!! Thank you so much for taking the time to join in 🤗🌸
Oi Helena 🤩💐 muito obrigado por também assistir esse vídeo! Eu realmente aprecio o quão generoso você é com seu tempo assistindo e me deixando comentários encorajadores. Obrigada!! 🤗 🌸
Ciao Claudio!! 🤗💐 thank you so very much for coming to have a look see at my video! I really enjoyed your video... again, it was uplifting and much needed, very inspiring, thank you! Have a wonderful Sunday 🌸
🦒💐👌!!! The learning never ends. Thanks for sharing the issues, we learn a lot from them. They bounced back beautifully, fingers crossed 🤞🤞🍀 for the stuburn one. They look so cute in those little baskets!!!! And their situation in the blooming alley is 👌. Have a great Sunday my vecina favorita, hope you can have a rest in your busy schedule enjoying your lovely orchids. Mingi hugggssss 🤗❤️😍
Hey!! FFF 🤸🏼♀️🙌🏼🥰💐 it never ends, nope! my grandma always used to say that, if you did not learn something on a day, then it was a waste of a day... I don't agree with her 😅 but I know where she was coming from.. still, I don't need that stress in my life! I think they look a lot better than they did this time last year... some muscle memory of my brain says they look better. I gave them some seaweed this morning, and will mist them down again in a few minutes. It is a beautiful day today... and I have an Orange Nugget to film, just to be on the safe side.... the weather forecast is having issues being correct, and while it is predicting rain but we have a sunny day, I will take advantage of it! I hope that your Sunday is going great, meine liebe Freundin 🥰 lunch on the patio and all that good stuff that Sunday brings along with it. Bon appetit! Bon siesta 😃 much love to you vecina! Jumping up and down from across the border waving!! ❤️🌸
Those are the cutest baskets. Great little homes for your tolumnias. All they are missing is an address tag 😁 lava rock is such a great medium because most roots will attach quite easily and yes, lava rock does tend to accumulate salt. Stubbornly difficult to remove unless it is drenched for a long time in clean water. I can see the challenge of growing them in semi hydro. The roots would have to cling fairly fast to leca. If there aren't many roots, I could see them just blowing off in the wind. Someone mentioned that they could be potentially fragrant so I'll have to check that out. I bought some tolumnias in May and one is now in bloom! Jairak Hot Pink! I'm just checking the care aspect, and what other blooms look like. I'm also waiting to see if this spike will branch. So far, they have been care free, just soaked or sprayed on htot dunny days. Some took a beating because I removed a growth to send off to Orchideya who wanted to try them. Other than a snail that popped out of one of the mounts, they have so far been pest free. The spike is ridiculously long at 25cm 😒. It's been maybe 15 years since I've seen a tolumnia spike here. Great video...happy growing Nina.
Hi Res! 🤩💐 they were, for the most part, mislabelled. Although they all have / had tags, I am not paying attention to them because they are wrong. So, for those that were clearly wrong, I took the tags off. I have been using A LOT of just plain RO water to keep the lava rock from accumulating anymore salts and only on occasions do they now get a very weak solution of fertilizer. Which, I leave on for about 20 mins and then spray them again with RO water to not let the first application dry off too quickly. For the most part, they have recovered really well. That is a long spike, indeed 😅 I have one spiking right now, but I wonder how long I can keep that spike, because today we had 35ºC and 20% humidity with hot winds to boot! It may frazzle before it can bud out. We shall see, but the overall health and appearance has improved 100% 👍🏼 Enjoy your blooms, Res! They are going to be around for a long time 👍🏼👍🏼 thank you so much for going back to watch this video, I really appreciate it very much! Have a lovely evening 🌸
@@NinjaOrchids Yes, I'm sure some of my 6 will be mislabelled. I know 3/6 are different but are all burgundy as a base. All burgundy, burgundy with white spots, and this one in bloom is burgundy, but it has a yellow bra and white undies 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Would you consider keeping them indoors while in bloom? Mine are in warm sunlight, and AC too. Totally oblivious to my conditions. Regardless of the mislabelled plant's, you have a good range of colors. Happy growing, and stay 😎
I honestly had not thought of bringing the tolumnia that is in spike indoors 🤦🏼♀️ d'oohh!! I shall bear that in mind if I get another day like yesterday. Today... as if nothing ever happened, the spike still looks to be ok. Yellow Bra and undies 😅😅 I can see it! I can see it!! 😂👍🏼👍🏼
Hi Matt! 🤗💐 too much of a good thing can be detrimental, as is the case on some of mine, so... now that they are tucked into the West side trellis, I am hoping that they can get a respite. Much like us, when we are on a beach after years of deprivation, sitting in the shade with palm trees around us sipping a local adult beverage... the aaaahhhh 'life is good feeling' comes in! Thank you so much, Matt, for joining in! More to come... I will contact you about the rupicolous laelias... if you are ready to share what you experienced by now? I have another channel with some of them, not exactly the same as our's but, I would love it if she could join in as well. We do a rupicolous laelia general care video 🤔 But I will take the ones I have in common with you for that video, so that we can suss out our plants and take notes 👍🏼 Have a great Sunday, Matt! 🌸
HI there! 🤗💐 how very kind of you to come and have a look see at this video! Thank you so very much and WELCOME! I thought I had these cuties dialled in for the past years, but '20 taught me a lesson... things are improving, all be it slowly, but I can see a difference which gives me hope that this year it will be much better for them... never hurt to put orchids on a diet 😅 again, welcome and thank you so very much for coming over and watching. Have a wonderful Sunday 🌸
Hi Adyasha! 🤗💐 so kind of you to join in on this Carecollab! I really appreciate your time, coming over to have a look! I hope that we can find more videos that we can do together! I love all the cute colors on your tolumnias 🥰 Have a beautiful evening, Adyasha 🌸
Your set up for the Tolumnia's is so great! And they seem to love it! Thanks again for sharing and give us other growers the change to join in on these care collabs! I love them and love making them! :D
Hi there 🤗💐 I like them in their little baskets as well. Now, I can see that as they grow bigger, they are not growing upright in the basket and some fans are growing out through the spaces on the side 🙄 maybe one day, this cute little set up is going to have to be reassessed! But, for now, they make a cute little display and then i will figure out how to fix the set up when the time comes. Much like with my stanhopea, I was growing it cute, but it had no chance of blooming, so... I am trying a different approach, hoping that inorganic can still be effective. Thank YOU so much for reaching out and jumping on the Carecollab for tolumnias! Your time is so very much appreciated! I will get to your video as soon as I can 🙏🏼 have a great Sunday 🤗🌸
I thought your video was very interesting. I grow Tolumnias also. I have one on a mount and the rest in pots. I use cal mag with my fertilizer. I don’t use epsom salt to often. Your right about scale insects. I had them on my Masdevallias, which I ended up loosing 2 of them. They are nasty insects. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. 🤗🌴🥀
Shirley, hi! 🥰💐 I am hoping to do better by my tolumnias! I nuked them with love last year... now that they have been hanging in their summer location, I can see a massive improvement of the visual to last time this year. I don't have photos, but it is in my mind, some kind of 'recall' that I see them looking so much better, now than back then. I have chubbier leaves .. now I need to make sure that they get a little bit of a respite from the amount of light they have been getting, but, this morning when I sprayed them, I was so glad that they looked much better. Scale.... I hate them! And, in my environment, they take out the weaker plants... this one little tolumnia is from Schwerter... again! 🤨 thank YOU for taking the time to watch and sharing your experience. How high is your CalMag ppm when you apply it to your Tolumnias? Just interested to know if my thinking of 100ppm is still too high? I appreciate your time! Thank you 🌸 have a beautiful Sunday 🌸
My mom used to have them in the garden when I was a child in Surinam, she grew them in her Ixora trees and her Hibiscus trees, they were all over the garden. I remember the leaves were green even though the sun was blazing almost all of the time. I think it was because they were shielded from the sun by the leaves of the trees. Maybe the temperature also played a part.
Awhhh!! 🤗💐 hi! you watched this one as well, thank you! I can only imagine how gorgeous that must have been having them dotted around the trees like that! If I can get a week of dull weather, the leaves on mine go a little greener as well. But they color up quickly after 2 days of sun, even if they are mainly in the shade. Today it is super windy and I did not give them any fertilizer because of how fast they would dry out! I have learned my lesson 💆🏼♀️ 🌸
@@NinjaOrchids hi Nina, watched another video CHECK👍🏼. I watch all your videos though but I don’t always comment because sometimes I just don’t have but time but waking up to a new new video is my morning routine while brushing my teeth, beginning the day with orchids in my mind🤗
Hi Nina, this video about tolumnias happens at the right moment for me, I am going to flush them with rain water and epson salt 100ppm to remove excess fertilizer salts. I was talking to Lynn about the medium she uses for tolumnias, a few stones, I might repot one of mine in lava rock or pumice. Thanks Nina.
Andre, hi!! 🤗💐 so good to see you again! Keep them salt free! I am proof that too much of a good thing is not good for these guys! I thought, as they grew, they needed a little more, but wow... almost knocked out my entire collection 😓 You are very welcome Andre, and thank you so very much for watching!! Have a great evening 🌸
Hi 🤗💐 oh boy... close call, I tell you! Now that I have had them on that back trellis a couple of days, I can tell that they are looking much better than they did this time last year! 🧐 Just a few more months of letting them grow some healthy roots, and lesson learnt! Talk about love bombing orchids to near death 💆🏼♀️ Thank you so very much for taking the time to join in on this carecollab, I really appreciate it 🌸 have a great Sunday 🌸
@@NinjaOrchids But the best thing is that you figured out what was wrong and were able to fix it. I hate when the orchid is not doing well and I can't figure out why!! 🤭
I love tolumnias! Mine grow well.... but don’t bloom ☹️ new fans but no spikes. I’ve tried more light, more fertilizer, less fertilizer. Mounted, potted in rocks, bare root. Good thing I like the foliage otherwise I would have given up by now 🙄🤔
Danielle, my fellow orchid lover! 😍💐 how wonderful to see you again! 🙌🏼❤️🙌🏼 first of all! Once again, I apologize for not having emailed you... honestly, I totally forgot 🤦🏼♀️ I did a quick Carecollab alert video and went with the responses in the comments' section and then some people emailed me... I am so sorry to not have taken my brain to extend beyond what I was getting in response to the video! Sigh! 😓 I also cannot figure out why your's won't bloom... you say that you gave them more light... did they get the red tinges on their leaves, freckles? And still nothing? .... that is so odd. 🤔 They are pretty to grow for their looks, I agree, but still... it is frustrating when you have a healthy plant and it won't bloom! I hope that you are doing well, Danielle! Spring? Finally?? Also... your wildlife giving you lots of joy 🙏🏼 thank you so much for taking the time to watch, Danielle! And, my apologies for the lack of memory and not having contacted you 😘 I have added you to the list, now though... I hope that we can get together at some point. Stay safe, my friend! Stay blessed!! Have a beautiful Sunday ❤️🙌🏼❤️🌸
@@NinjaOrchids hello my friend!! Do not feel bad! I saw your Carecollab alert video but I have so much going on 🙄 I didn’t have time to join. At this point I am more of a watch when you have two spare minutes type of youtuber. I want so much to post a video of my own soon. The grow room is filled with blooms! I have to get around to it very soon! This video I think helped me figure out what I was doing wrong. I think I was giving to much light and stressing them to much so thank you!!! I hope you have a wonderful week! Sending virtual hugs and positive orchid vibes! 🥰💙🥰
💐🥰I can't believe how kind you are! thank you so much 🙏🏼I mean it! It means so much to see feedback, especially when it is positive and encouraging! ❤️🌸 thank you!
It’s very helpful thanks Nina. I have given up on self watering with leca. I just couldn’t get the ratio right. I’ve started again with just 3 in small baskets in the couple of pieces of bark they came with. So far so good. They’re inside under my Mars light for the winter.
Trisha! Hi! 🤗💐 I could not get it right either, but I know it can be done... my winters, though.... I would love to try again, but talking shelf space and all that, it would just be a test for myself to see if I can do it (ego). But yeah, I lost some trying the self watering right off the bat. Interesting that you had the same experience. Thank you for sharing and for watching, thank you! Have yourself a wonderful Sunday 🌸
Might be a naive question to ask a guru, but have you tried soaking them? When I flush the chids I either let the water keep running through them or I let them soak. Soaking has always removed salt build up for me on bark. Not sure if stone would have the same reaction. 😉
Paige 🥰💐 Guru! 🤣 shucks! Maybe one day.... but thank you for your boost of confidence comment 😘 I have not soaked them, 'yet', when I realized what I was doing wrong, it was too late in the season, we were heading into the winter, and all I needed to be concerned about at this time is to make sure that their weakness is not perpetuated while it got cold, BUT, now that it is warming up, in a month or so, a soak could be a great idea 👍🏼 the salt build up would release on lava rock as well... Imagine how it has not been completely removed with a targeted jet of water, after all these months, but... a soak 👍🏼 yep... a jacuzzi for the tolumnias in May! Thank you so very much for watching! Your seedling CareCollab is being coordinated and if everyone can make it for the 8th May, then it is go time! You have not been forgotten 🥰 have yourself a wonderful day, Paige! Thank you for watching 🌸
🦩🦒🥰 Hey Darcy! 🥰 thank you so much! I really appreciate your cute daily emoji delivery in my comments! Cheerful and uplifting! Thank you 🥰 have a beautiful Sunday, Darcy! 🌸
You are my second one to watch so still have a few to go. Could take a while. Liking that set up you have there. The ability to keep them outside and then have an ‘alley’ to shade and protect them is a real bonus and something we can never dream of in the UK. I have been trying to grow these little beauties for 6 years now and they are finally coming together. I still have quite a few rescue ones, that have survived and now are growing on so recovering well. Just out of curiosity a question for you, your ready made up 100 ppm spray of MSU - do you do that every day or do you do it every time you spray them? Am sort of assuming you spray every day now when they are outside, may be wrong of course.
Hi Lynn 😃💐 I mix my fertilizer every day, but I do not spray the tolumnias every day with fertilizer anymore. I used to.... big mistake, because of how quickly they dry out in the summer. I honestly thought that the amount of plain RO water I have to throw at them during the summer months, would flush out the excess fertilizer, but they dry out faster than they take in the fertilizer. So... now, I only give them 100ppm 2x / week, and before they dry out, spray them with plain RO water so that I don't nuke the roots again. And if I have not used all of the content of the 100ppm then, the rest of it goes into my plain RO water bucket which will then maybe have a TDS of 20, if that! I don't like having to use any fertilizer that has stood for more than a day. I hope I understood the direction of your question, and answered it well enough? Thank you so much for taking the time to join in on this CareCollab! So very much appreciated. 👍🏼 hope you are having a great Sunday 🌸
@@NinjaOrchids yes thank you that was what I was hoping you would say. I only ever measure TDS so ppm is not something I think about as a rule but if it is coming in at 20 for TDS that is good.
🌸🥷🏼Trish!! 🤗💐 next year... I have to see how this summer goes with the ones I still have, and if I am better at meeting their needs, as opposed to forcing my beliefs on them. But yes... the baskets hang empty next to my desk and 'just in case' I forget... they remind me of needing to fill them 😉 Thank you very much for watching 🌸
Hi Diana 🥰💐 yes, the added stress stopped me from repotting with clean lava rock. The roots being so thin and brittle, there is no way I would not have done considerable damage to what was ok and functioning, to some degree, if I had started to go down that route. While I really love lava rock for orchids, it is the most damaging media to roots when it comes time to repot. These guys were so weak at the time... best to leave them be and only use clean water. This year, they are growing well, with the exception of one that may have underlying issues, so I dodged a bullet there 👍🏼👍🏼 phew! Thank you so much for watching, Diana!! Hope you are doing well 🤗 thank you so much for watching 🌸

Thank you, so much, for watching my videos! And, I apologize for the late reply... I responded a while ago and I guess that comment did not go through. Then I responded again, and once again, the comment did not go through! If you are getting 3 responses with the similar context then, you know that my response to you is not registering! I was saying that, you do not need to describe the connection you have to your plants. I know what you mean and can fully relate. I am having to empty a few pots of orchids that did not make it through the cold dark spring. They did not recover and shocker, 2 of them are super precious to me! 😤 the guilt... it takes months to try and rescue an orchid that is doomed, but we keep trying. During those months, I attempt to make peace with the situation, seeing as the inevitable is in the future. Every orchid is precious, I fully understand where you are coming from 👍🏼
I would love to know what it is that I'm doing wrong with mine! They look healthy, have healthy root systems and have plenty of fans coming this year but they just don't flower. There are so many factors that it could be so I don't know which.
Hi Cas 🤩💐 welcome! I have not seen you here before, so, first of all a warm warm welcome and thank you so much for being here, I really appreciate it! 🙌🏼 I have to ask some questions... how long have you had your tolumnias? and... the classic one, how much light are your tolumnias getting? Have they got freckles or reddening on their leaves to show the anthocyanin? What factors come to mind when you are troubleshooting for yourself? If there is anything you would like to run by me, please do... sometimes, it is something you already know, but only after going through it with a second 'set of eyes' does it make click and boom... your tolumnias will bloom 😃 let me know a little bit more and I am sure it is a simple little fix! Thank you so much for watching and once again, welcome 🙌🏼🌸
@@NinjaOrchids Thank you so much for your reply - I really wasn't expecting it! I've had one of them for about a year and a half now and the others for a year (5 in total) I don't know why I bought so many, not knowing if I could actually re-bloom them or not... stoopid but here we are! All of them have freckles and a slight purple tinge to the tips of the leaves. Two of them have quite a lot of purple actually (look more like yours) because I left them in the windowsill whist I went away for the weekend by mistake... so probably a bit too much sun for those guys but the rest look about right I reckon. Initially I thought maybe not enough sun but after consulting a few videos I think that's not the problem (except it might be because we don't get much sun in winter and they revert back to completely green during that time! Do they need sun all year round??) I keep them on the windowsill in a bright south facing window in winter and in summer I put them on a sunny table near the window if it's super bright - see above, too much sun on windowsill!). I water them about every 4 days, in our UK climate if I did them every day then I think they'd be damp for too long (basically they end up one day wet, second day slightly damp and day 3 completely dry) Occasionally I don't get to them straight away so they get 2 dry days but never longer than that. They're in loose chunky bark - you can see some of the roots peeking through the bark and they look good to me - they green up nicely on watering day. The one I've had for 18 months has 4 fans and it was in bloom when I bought it. The other 4 each have 2 or 3 fans and all have new fans on the way (little sprouts coming... they seem to grow fairly fast so those little sprouts will be big ones soon, I'm sure!) Each fan seems to be a little bit bigger and bushier than the last except for the biggest one which, judging by the size of yours and other videos, has probably reached its maximum capacity for growth size. Maybe it's a temperature thing...? In winter it can get down to 15 degrees C at night in the house. In summer up to around 35 degrees on a warm day.
Your tolumnias are approx 8-10 months away from blooming 👍🏼 when we get new orchids into our collection, they all have to acclimate and that usually takes a year +/- if an orchid blooms during the period of acclimating, then it could be because the nursery or previous grower did a great job and we reap the benefits. But, then the orchid may not bloom for the next cycle, as it acclimates. Another reason an orchid may bloom relatively quickly for us, is stress from having a change in environment, and then it may not bloom the next cycle either. So, your tolumnias are growing well, getting enough light, and for that reason... blooms will come when their next natural cycle kicks in and I would assume that will be in 8-10 months. They do not need sun in winter, bright light and any winter sun on occasions is sufficient, seeing as tolumnias usually start blooming late fall and throughout the winter. At least the hybrids that I have seen. To get a summer blooming tolumnia would indicate that it is under stress, or has not acclimated and is still on a previous environments cycle, if that makes sense 🤞🏼😬 it is not a temperature thing... my temps can drop to 14º, Cas, so... don't worry about that. Your's sound lovely and I am going to hedge a bet here.... you will have blooms at the end of this growth cycle. Keep them with freckles and anthocyanin, during the growing season. Don't worry about the greening up of the leaves when the dull winter days come, they should be in bloom by then 👍🏼 I hope this helps and I made sense 🤞🏼
@@NinjaOrchids Yes, brilliant, thank you so much. I will be patient then! I did wonder about the adjustment period and whether that might have affected things. The largest one (the one that had already bloomed before) also got knocked over at one point so I had to repot at an awkward time when there were no new fans or roots coming so that would have been stressful for it as well. Sounds as if I just need to wait!
My tolumnia leaves are falling down.. what’s the reason behind this? One of my tolumnia roots and crown got rotten bec of over watering and sudden climate change. My new tolumnia just repotted in Leca balls and watering weekly twice because it’s raining in my place and I have kept under shade . Even after that within a week of repotting, leaves are falling down.. what’s the reason behind this? Will I lose my tolumnia?
Hi Jensi 🤗💐 I am so sorry to hear that your tolumnias are struggling because of climate changing on you! That is tough to handle because it is out of our control. My species phalaenopsis are not all going to survive the winter we have had, same story.... the climate was far to harsh for them and too cold for too long (which was not normal for my area). I would remove your tolumnia out of the leca, and pot it up into small stones, with a little bark in between the stones, but no bark on the top of the pot. I do not know if you have a small basket you can put it in? The stones will help keep the base of the tolumnia dry and the little pieces of bark in the pot will help with some water. But, the ratio of stones (medium size stones) to the bark has to be 80 stones, 20% bark. And no bark at the top of the pot. If your tolumnia has enough fans to survive the part that is loosing leaves, then, it will make it. If it is a single fan with a small new growth, then... it will be difficult to save it. I am sorry to have to tell you this, but that is my honest opinion. I lost many tolumnias to leca, because the surface either stayed too wet, and the base of the growths stayed wet too long, causing the leaves to drop, or, the leca was too dry causing the roots to desiccate. ruclips.net/video/I1eZtd_IZbg/видео.html in this video I pot up a tolumnia into semi hydro, explaining why I am layering the media the way I am, so far, that tolumnia is doing great! ruclips.net/video/yprup-1eltA/видео.html in this video, I potted up another tolumnia with only lava rock, because that is what it was used to, but I also explain why I am doing that to this tolumnia compared to the one in the previous video I recommend, which could be of help. Once you have switched your tolumnia to the media I recommend, then keep it in a place with a lot of air flow. I hope that what I wrote helps and I hope that we got to your tolumnia on time! Please let me know. And if you have any questions on any of the videos I have linked, keep asking and we will get something sorted out so that you are comfortable with what you are doing with your tolumnia, and should it not make it, then at least, if you get a new one, it will be fine 👍🏼 thank you for watching this video, I really appreciate it! 🙏🏼🌸
@@NinjaOrchids thanks a lot for your detailed reply.. I have potted one tolumnia in only coconut chips, another tolumnia in a mix of charcoal and coconut chips. Both are well. Another charcoal and coconut chips potted plant died.. so will try with your method for the pots with Leca balls to revive it
@@JensiEdith oh!! I am so glad to hear that you have some that are doing well!! Woohoo!! 🙌🏼 that is great news! Sometimes we see a genus and say, well, it is a Tolumnia and my others are doing well in their set up, so we repeat it with others, and then suddenly, they don't like it... just like with the phalaenopsis complex hybrids... why do some do well, in a set up and others do not do so well, even though we are not doing anything different! 🤷🏼♀ I have come to understand that every orchid is different, even within the same genus and hopefully we can get to those that do not behave as expected, in time, and change things up so that they will grow nicely as well! But, that is really great news, I am sooo glad 👍🏼👍🏼 thank you for letting me know 🤗
I didn't know what a Tolumnia was. Did you say scale is problem with this orchid, ot oh. Don't need any more of that with over 300 Catts. I found a rodent and insect bag with balls in fused with peppermint and garlic oils. Its running most of the little critters out of my grow area. I still spray for insects but the oils seem to keep most away. No effect on flowers. Great video Orchid Master.❤
🌸🥷🏼Bob San 😍🙌🏼🤸🏼♀️🥰💐 hi! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! For watching all these videos and keeping the channel active 🙏🏼 scale is a HUGE problem once this genus gets it! I had 19 in total and one summer, I was not paying attention and boom... I tried to rescue all of them to the best of my ability. I was on them every day for almost 3 years checking them for anything new that may have come back over night, and well... I lost them all, bar 1, but I am done with this genus for now. Its been hard work and I have nothing to show for....thanks to me dropping the ball and the fact that scale will weaken them. I even had scale on the roots 🫣 I used to take pics of them so that I could scrutinze the images on a large screen to check and see if I missed scale anywhere. No luck. They gone! 😔 I have to see the label of that rodent / insect bag. I may need something similar for the coming months. I had ratatouille and mouskewitz in my home last year and it was freaking me out every night, seeing the traces until I finally managed to get rid of them with help from someone else because I went into panic stations. I did not know something like that existed. I have peppermint oil, but am not sure how effective that will be with everything constantly being washed away by rain and humidity. If its not an inconvenience, would you mind sending me the label? Maybe I can source something similar here? No rush 😘🫶🏼❤️🌸
Becky! HI!! 😍💐 I have been tentatively doing that ... only once so far, in early April... I am now paranoid about putting anything on them 😅 so, I don't know if my 100 ppm did anything to release the minerals, I know it will do something for their Mg deficiency after 6 months of no fertilizer! But... I was quick to rinse the epsom salts off after an hour because, again... just a bit paranoid now 😬 it is a great thought, if I knew for sure that I am not doing any further damage, perpetuating the problem. Today I gave them some seaweed. 🤞🏼 they look better than they did this time last year, so.. there is hope! Thank you for your tip, Becky! So good to see you again 🙌🏼 have a wonderful Sunday 🌸
I have a few tolumnia in semi hydro so trial and error for me and seeing if they will survive or bloom. I was thinking why not soak them in water regularly to get rid of salt build up or just make a very weak fertilizer solution? I read that orchids in general dont need alot of fertilizer so i think maybe we just give them to much?
HI!! 🤗💐 fully agree... sometimes, 'we' give them too much and I almost nuked mine because I thought .... love you guys, here you go! 🙄 not the right MO! I will soak them in May, and see if that takes off the last of the build up. I could not do that after I realized the error of my ways, because it was already too late in the season last year, and we were heading into winter.... next month... tolumnia jacuzzi will be open for business 😅 thank you so much for watching, and for your observations, I really appreciate it very much! Have a wonderful Sunday 🌸
@@NinjaOrchids im going to buy a few more and experiment with lava rock. If i wanted to soak tolumnia how long should i soakthem for and how many times a week roughly? Can tolumnia go for long periods with no water?
Sorry for this late reply! I did not see this comment, until now. I would not soak for more than 10 minutes and depending on the ambient temperature / airflow, in cool temperatures 15ºC with no wind, they can go without water for 3 days, but in hotter temps, they should not go without water for even a day. These pointers apply to tolumnias on mounts, or on lava rock, or growing bare root. The leaves are the best indicators if they are getting too thirsty... if they loose their plumpness and look as if they are 'closing' then they are in need of a good drink. hope this helps? 🌸
@@NinjaOrchids thanks nina Well i did a mix bag experiment, some in lava rock, lecca, and coconut fiber in terra cotta pots and in mesh basket i found at a $2 shop. Will see what grows the best over a year. I still have few in semi hydro too.
ummm, the hag? I'm not going to ask. As soon as it warms up sufficiently, take one and soak it in plain R/O for an hour or so and see if the TDS goes up. The salts on the surface may be insoluble in water and will never go away without a strong acid (at some point they become water insoluble precipitates, usually calcium carbonate but can be calcium hydroxide or magnesium oxide). Calcium carbonate isn't so much a problem as the other two, both are hygroscopic and will desiccate a root if they touch it. The only thing to do is remove any pieces of lava rock where you can see it. Tolumnia and scale are a huge problem. They got into one of mine this spring and it is probably not going to make it. Unfortunately it was my favorite one but, where I have them mounted, I can't see the problem until they start turning yellow from the scale damage. If it doesn't make it, well, that will be that because that hybrid isn't being sold anymore. C'est la vie.
Don Miguel 🥰💐 I am so oblivious of the difference of mineral build up that you point out here! Wow! I am Jon Snow... I know nothing! Thank you so very much, for once again sharing this invaluable nuggets! That explains why some of the lava rock still has the build up despite being hit with the strong jet on the daily... now that the surface around the base of each tolumnia is looking good... the perimeters just don't seem to want to budge! I have a tolumnia jacuzzi party planned for May... thought I would give them all a soak but before that, I will single one out and do as you say... check the TDS on one of them 👍🏼 this is the strangest thing ever... this comment was not here when I started to reply to comments on this video! I stepped away for a bit, came back and refreshed the page, and here it is, and 11 hrs ago! 🤨 I don't understand the tubes sometimes! I am sorry to hear of your favorite being taken down! If I make the mistake and love bomb mine to near death, that is on me, but when it comes to scale taking them down, then.... that really makes me angry. That would be another Schwerter orchid gone if that one little fan doesn't pull through. C'est la vie indeed... especially with Schwerter and it should not be in your case, I am sorry! 😘 I hope that, otherwise, your Sunday has started of with lots of good things happening! Is it true that you are being inundated with rain? I saw a forecast that there is a depression over FL that won't budge and it is just torrential rain for days! Stay safe if that is the case 🙏🏼 thank you so much for watching this video.... it means a lot!! ❤️🌸
@@NinjaOrchids I spent way too much time in chemistry classes, I suppose. But if you don't get a jump in TDS (I would expect it to go up 30-50 ppm but ignore that, as with leca, so long as it doesn't shoot over 100 or so), then all of the salts that can dissolve are gone and you can resume feeding. No rain here yet. They claim it will start raining late tonight and through to Wednesday. I'll believe it when I see it. It was supposed to be rainy across the middle of the state starting yesterday and it is still way up where the panhandle joins the mainland.
I had a hard time with chemistry! i could not get the information to stay in my brain... later in life, I recognized that I have dyslexic tendencies (I was 35 when it dawned on me) and that I was not an idiot afterall. I studied chemistry by recoding my voice as I read the books, and then had the tape on throughout the night on my walkman hoping that subconsciously some information would stick. I was physically ill before taking my finals, and threw up after I left the room..... 30 minutes later I was fine and I can tell you, I forgot everything that I thought I had learned. ... Oh, and the one index card of notes we were allowed to bring into the exam, I wrote the smallest letters, and kept the pencil super sharp to allow for maximum space to write everything I thought I needed down. Scariest exam prep of my life! We are supposed to get inundated according to the forecast, but it has been a beautiful day ... I guess, for the time being, I am going to go by what I see when I wake up and film depending on that. Schedule is pointless at the moment!

What is aggressive feeding of orchids?
Mam,
Is it okay to shower whole Tolumnia watering daily ?
Great tolumnia collection
I really need to get some more tolumnias 😁 Thanks for your invite for the carecollab, i really enjoyed participating as always 😁

Yes, I'm sure some of my 6 will be mislabelled. I know 3/6 are different but are all burgundy as a base. All burgundy, burgundy with white spots, and this one in bloom is burgundy, but it has a yellow bra and white undies 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Would you consider keeping them indoors while in bloom?

You've got so much knowledge about Tolumnias, thanks for sharing! Looking forward to seeing the results of your culture changes.
Very Interesting video... thank you for it🙂👍
😍❤️
Thanks!
Thank YOU, Ernest 😃💐 really appreciate you watching! Hope you had a wonderful day 🙌🏼🌸
Beautiful plants, they seem to be recovering really well and the blooms... I can't handle it 😅
Hi 🤗💐 oh boy... close call, I tell you!
True! you are absolutely right about that... I lost a few because I couldn't tweak the culture to save them 🙄
I love tolumnias!
really looking forward to see your blooms 😍 it must be absolutely amazing!! I hope that you are going to find time to have some R&R, amiga!! 🙌🏼❤️🙌🏼
Love the video, Nina! ❤ And thank you for sharing with us!

5 empty baskets to fill ❤️.
Why not repot using new salt-free medium? Is it that u think repotting would cause additional stress?

PS, thank you so much for offering your advice - I really appreciate it.
No rush 😘🫶🏼❤️🌸
how bout tryingepson salts to rinse off the salts? just thought
Becky!
@@NinjaOrchids thanks nina
Well i did a mix bag experiment, some in lava rock, lecca, and coconut fiber in terra cotta pots and in mesh basket i found at a $2 shop.
