    My great great great grandfather operated the steam engine that powered Aberlour distillery. I was born in Dufftown, the malt whisky capital of the world, it currently has six active distilleries, Glenfiddich, Dufftown, Balvenie, Glendullan, Kininvie and Mortlach. Former Distilleries in Dufftown were, Convalmore, Pittyvaich and Parkmore.

      Well that's a pretty cool part of history you have there! I know I for one will walk the streets of Dufftown someday!!! :-) ~Mark

    Abelour was built on a swamp. It sank into the swamp. So, they built a second one. That sank into the swamp. So, they built a third one. That burned down, fell over, then sank into the swamp, but the fourth one... stayed up!

      There is a saying "failure is not making mistakes, it is making the same mistake twice". Definitely a mistake building a distillery three times in a swamp. Ha ha!!! Thanks for yet another of your great historical investigations.

    Glad y'all did a review of this bottle. I found it at my local Bevmo in San Diego about 4 months ago for 36 dollars. Its was half off so I couldn't resist. Still haven't opened it but I am having a tasting at my house this weekend and will share then. Great review as always. Cheers!

    Great video! I quite enjoy Aberlour 16 Although it'd be probably number 5 on my Aberlour depth chart (behind A'bunadh, 18, Casg Anamh, and the old 12 NCF). Fun fact - the 16 is the whisky that brought Bre fully into the whisky world. It was the first one that she didn't just tolerate, but actually enjoyed. And it sparked that curiosity that started her own whisky journey.
    Also, Andrew is killing it in this one! The cork drop/bounce/catch and grin at the beginning, "smell it with your other nose", and dropping a "bitch" in there, ha ha! Great stuff! Also - surprising me with the 2.5! When I saw the average, I knew it was three 2.5s and a 2. Totally thought Andrew would be the 2 for sure. And Mark, I feel you on the hoppy note - I have definitely gotten that on some scotches. Not just herbal/grassy etc., but HOPS in particular.

    I think you are nailing this one. It is a good dram, but somehow it still ends up a little boring. I kinda think the very soft water is working against the whisky. On the 16 it isn't a big thing because the extra age and sherry influence makes up for it, but both the 10 and 12 ends up with very flat mouthfeels.

  • @mikewade1629

    I'd rate the cork bouncing skills a 3.5/4 on the scale.

    Love you guy's video! You've been helping me understand my Scotch experience! I've been loving the Monkey Shoulder, The Glenlivet 12 was my favorite....not it's the 18. I know the price $140 a bottle, but man when I drop 2-3 drops of water that Glenlivet 18 smells so good & it takes away the burn! All flavor. I'm getting into Cigars too so I notice the lighter Whiskeys pair well will my cigars.
    I will definitely try this Aberlour 16 too 😎 ... love anything that's has apple, pear, citrus, brown sugar notes.

    From Aberlour I've just tried A'Bunahd and fell in love with it. Now I'm debating on going for it and paying 79.99 for it or buying a 12yr Double Cask for 44.99 or 16yr Double Cask for 64.99... Any thoughts?

    • @Scotch4Dummies
      @Scotch4Dummies  4 года назад

      Hard questions to answer. The A'Bunadh if I remember correctly has a lot more sherry flavor kicking in. The 16 is more fruit cake with all spice. I don't recall the 12 as well. I don't think you'll be disappointed with any of those.

    • @jasoncoates1835
      @jasoncoates1835 4 года назад +1

      Last bottle of 12 I had was fresh and bright, all on apples, butterscotch, and soft baking spices. It's a light, fruity, refreshing kind of sherried dram. It's miles away from the A'bunadh (the only two Aberlours I've had) in terms of character. I get a much richer, darker, earthier and more complex experience from the A'bunadh. And a ton more power. I like the 12, but I don't think I could pass up an A'bunadh at $80. (It's on the shelf at $100 here.)

      @@jasoncoates1835 Damm, I messed up by starting with A'Bunahd and now I'm afraid of getting the 12 or 16 and not living up to what I experienced. From what I've read Aberlour 12 Double cask Is really similar to Balvenie double wood. I might take your advice and go for A'bunahd!!

      Here in PA it is available in 43% also. I have purchased the Abunadh in past and may get this. Im guessing they scored low.

    • @robinsharkey6658
      @robinsharkey6658 4 года назад +2

      Nah, skip it, look more for independent bottlings of Aberlour. Distillery releases are very tame and tooooooo light

    • @robinsharkey6658
      @robinsharkey6658 4 года назад +1

      @Jason Voorheese I don't come across them often in my area of Canada. Just stick to higher abv bottlings and better distilleries. years of excellent whisky has skewed my opinion. I dislike 40% chill filtered mass produced stuff for the most part!

    • @Scotch4Dummies
      @Scotch4Dummies  4 года назад +1

      I always think higher ABV will help but I don't know how much in this case 3% would help. It's a good dram, but not great.

    • @jasoncoates1835
      @jasoncoates1835 4 года назад

      Sometimes that jump from 40% to 43% is more impactful than you would think.

    One of my favorite single malts, one for beginners, but also for any occasions (some great food pairings), but I did buy it for years, as in France it has been long time reduced to 43 %, not less (& was sold at around 35 €! = 39 USD), but now it seems it is watered down to 40 % (maybe not for our market though, or not yet), plus (i guess because of old cask shortage & sherry casks coast) other versions have been restricted even here...The 18 yo has been bottled in 50 cl instead of 70 cl since this a year or so, and for some markets (UK mainly) A'Bunadh sees an increase of price in order to limit its sells (& make stocks last a bit more obviously).

      @@Scotch4Dummies You're welcome, Mark....besides I was at my local (big !) supermarket a few hours ago & I saw they rebranded the 12 yo (new label, new packaging) & 2 new recent references "Casg Annamh" (= kinda sweetened A'Bunadh) & "Triple Cask", seem to dominate the brands shelves, plus a vintaged young "White oak" casked, so not sure the current 16 yo will last...Cheers from France !

    you should compare this with aberlour 15 select reserve, or even aberlour 12 sherry cask . all of the "double cask" is usualy average not worthing.

    Naked Grouse can get you 90% of the way here. I was extremely disappointed with this one when I bought it. The sherry was too dominant and it came off as thin in the mouth. Not a fan.
