this is a great message - but the one thing i would disagree with is "the weight is irrelevant" - if you have been overweight for 30 years and the endocrinologist tells you if you lose 30 lbs you could reverse your type 2 diabetes and hypertension = then the weight is relevant !!- now - how you go about doing this is very important - i whole heartedly agree with focusing on nutrition vs. eating low quality foods in smaller amounts just to lose weight - the quality is very important - great video.

I will turn 78 later this month. I have dieted since the 1980’s. I have lost and regained weight so many times. I was successful several times but I have NEVER been able to maintain. I get so tired of counting points or calories and to loose the weight I cannot eat out at all. My husband and my daughter and her family eat out every Friday night. To keep the weight off, I had to stay home because I had few choices at a local fish restaurant. I was severely missing out on family time. I love to cook and I do. In the last year I have been in chronic pain and my energy level is nil. I have been watching for about a week after I found on RUclips. Your advice make awesome sense to me. I have tried to think about meals in the same way as I learned in Home Economics classes in high school. My husband will never eat what I think of is healthy but he is overweight and has high blood pressure and excellent labs. I wonder that doctors might be over prescribing blood pressure in the elderly. Fortunately my labs have been pretty good and the only prescription i use is an estrogen cream. I feel fortunate with that. I am trying to just get a healthy mind set and try to get dieting out of my head. I have lost 2 inches in height so as 5’1’ and 170 pounds i struggle to find clothes. Anyway, I’m just venting here. Thanks for listening. I appreciate your information. I wish I could afford your program but at this time it’s not possible. Thank you so much for the free information you give us on RUclips!

As someone with a bachelor's degree in nutrition (though not a registered dietitian because I didn't go on to do the internship), AND someone who struggled with weight and body image since senior year of high school (had a few good years in there leading up to the pandemic, but then went through 2 pregnancies and now struggling a bit again with these concepts - but working on it!) - I WHOLEHEARTEDLY agree with this messaging! I wish so badly that more people knew this. I wish diet culture was a thing of the past. But all we can do is keep trying to spread the word. Thanks for all that you do Becca!🥰

I turn 64 in a couple of days & I have never heard anyone talk like you do. It all makes so much sense!!!! I am meeting with a nutritionist these days & it is helping some. But I think you have more of the knowledge I need. Thank you, Becca, and keep talking to us!

While I understand the shift of away from ‘extreme crash diets’ and away from diet culture is so important, I sometimes get frustrated as a midsize lady with the notion that wanting to change our body composition is wrong. ‘Dieting’ through ‘healthy habits’ might be right in some situations. Examples of times in my life that I have ‘dieted’ after gaining some weight in college from eating and drinking too much, after both pregnancies, after gaining weight shortly after a marathon training cycle ended, and currently working on getting some COVID weight off. I have never gone to extremes but also know that if I left it up to my genetics I would be too heavy and not healthy.

I feel the same way! I always feel like everyone these days demonizes trying to lose weight or change your body composition. There’s nothing wrong with wanting or needing to lose some body fat. I feel like most people understand that crash diets don’t work. I don’t know anyone who thinks they do work. I find that no one (being registered dietitians on IG or here) actually provide tools for those of us who might want or need to lose some body fat. I don’t mind tracking my food. It doesn’t make me obsessed with the numbers or affects my relationship with food. I know for some with disordered eating patterns and struggles it can. I’m also a mid-sized gal with kids. I want to be healthy and strong and like how I look. Nancy Clark is the only one I’ve found who provides real, practical guidance on nutrition for active folks and also guidance for weight loss. She had several books I’d suggest. Thanks for your comment. Makes me feel like I’m not the only one who feels this way. Let’s not demonize anything: food, products, diets, etc. There’s a place for it all in our world. Also, the fitnesschef on IG is also very encouraging.

Thank you for this message! My heart truly loves the message of intuitive eating. But being morbidly obese, I find myself saying it applied to everyone but me. That I need to lose weight still.

Hi, I am not Becca, but if you strive for health, the extra weight may just come off.

I am morbidly obese too. One change that I have made is to eat more whole grains...whole wheat, oats, etc. and I have been losing weight. I think that if we "fuel" our bodies, we will loose weight.

@ellenmorgante4568 yes!! And it would be long term weight loss because it's the best way!

Totally agree! I have to constantly reread the book Cravings: A Catholic Wrestles with Food, Self-Image, and God to help reset my mind. Highly recommend!

Thanks Becca, as a dietitian, I am always trying to convey this message - I so appreciate when I hear others speak it with the nuance and clarity that it deserves. Am going to share this video with some of my clients. 😊

I absolutely loved this video!! So much truth!! I struggled with an eating disorder for 10 years, and I agree a million percent, that diets do not worth and just mess up your body!! I'm so glad I'm now finding intuitive eating!!

Love this!!! Can you do a deeper dive into the effects of yo-yo dieting or the restricting cycle? You mention that there is research showing the negative effects and I would love to learn more. It would help me with "the why" of a more intuitive eating, nourishment perspective.

This is SO important, I really love this message about weightloss and the clear explanation that you give. It matters ❤️ We are so many to suffer from this and according value to ourselves only through our weight. It's so damaging!

This was very helpful! Thank you! I’m chronically ill, I can’t exercise right now but I am moving and using the energy I have to make healthy foods. I was always thin but now I’m “overweight “ and I’ve been my own worst critic. So I’m going to take your advice! I do think a lot of my stress is food related! I love your what I eat in a day vlogs too! ❤️- Joanna

I recently had open heart surgery to replace a congenital defect of my aortic valve. The medicsl staff are overzealous about a heart healthy diet which incorporates a very ciet culture mentality. Of course i want my heart to be healthy and infind thr heart healthy diet very restrictive and triggering of my past disordered eating patterns. Thank you for focusing on intuitive eating and listening to our bodies. Intuitive eating to me is better for heart health.
