      Yellow Panzer That’s certainly one way to field them and would allow for a more dangerous approach when facing down the enemy for the Roman player. I think the early lists also field them as you do :)

    Thanks for sharing this video. Very helpful, I will build a Republican Roman army with 15mm miniatures and a Samnite army with a 80mm frontage.

    Seems like you would need skirmishers to harass the enemy until you have your Infantry in place, a few units of those looks more fun to pain and base then the hundreds upon hundreds of 15mm Romans I painted up back in the day , thanks for explaining the game and some units, I like Historical always have , even played the Avalon Hill games is where I got my start ..

    • @carthagemustbedestroyed
      @carthagemustbedestroyed  7 лет назад +1

      Yes, Skirmishers are a must have in this kind of army I think. I've played as Britons/Gauls where skirmishers do very little to the Imperial Roman foe (heavy armoured troops) and my foe tends to ignore them. I eventually move the skirmishers out of the way so my Warbands can charge the enemy and get their full Clash in... Skirmishers are going to be needed to shield these low-stamina small units, and should they survive the advance, then the skirmishers can hang out at the flanks / rear to protect charges (not the best defence, but its better than nothing). Fortunately for only 2 points, the Velites skirmishers can be upgraded to light infantry and can thus form battle lines and charge / accept enemy charges and offer somewhat a much better defence than skirmishers would. You lose the benefits of them being true skirmishers, though,.
      If you're playing standard frontages of Hail Caesar! with 15 mm, it will definitely look epic, but the model count in those units would be crazy! I guess though, because of the size, you do not need to slap as much paint on them? :P

    Hi Dustin.
    Have you actually fought a battle with multiple small units? From experience small units don't last very well, especially as these Roman units seem to be rather expensive points wise, it is not like you will have loads of them to ware the opponent down.

    • @carthagemustbedestroyed
      @carthagemustbedestroyed  6 лет назад +1

      The last time I used Small Units they died miserably. But that was as Early Imperial Romans and small units of light and medium infantry that ended up fighting Warbands full of angry Gauls.
      I suspect that on their own a single unit is dead and without the Roman Maniple system they are going to crumble and die horribly. But I think the point with the small heavy units is to try and get them in ASAP with two small units hanging around near each other. It may be quite difficult to do, especially since the small units are quite expensive and a good chunk of my points will be invested in them - Enemies like carthage are bound to have cheap medium or light infantry to get on to my flanks.. but I am hoping my small units of Cav or the Triarii will be able to take care of things.
      I'll find out soon - like you said in my experience so far the small units on their lonesome tend to get wrecked real quick. Hopefully the Roman Heavy Armor holds out! Thanks for the subscription and leaving a comment!

      Given a little practice, you'll find the greater numbers of small units will overwhelm standard sized units.

    • @carthagemustbedestroyed
      @carthagemustbedestroyed  6 лет назад +1

      That's my plan! Two units , say 1 unit of hastati and 1 unit Principes clashing with one standard unit... they're going to have a total of 10 attacks without supports! And that's every round of combat, unlike the Gauls! Not to mention, with skirmishers in tow, as well as the Triarii bonus support, that is quite a few attacks.

    Well, I'm doing a diorama on the Roman Civil War, more properly Ceasar vs. Pompey, but I do not know how to dye the legions of both, what are the differences in uniforms to separate from each other?

    • @carthagemustbedestroyed
      @carthagemustbedestroyed  5 лет назад +1

      I cannot say with any historical accuracy - but I've seen Caesar's legions represented with red shields while pompey uses yellow or ochre. i'd probably go mainly reds on Caesar, and whites and yellows on Pompey, but that is just my taste based on what I have seen others paint!

    I was looking at the Aventine miniature line and they had an army deal of 16 hastati, 16 principes, 16 velites and 8 triarii for
    FOG standard. What is FOG? Would this be a good Divison in Hail Ceasar if made into units of 8?

    • @carthagemustbedestroyed
      @carthagemustbedestroyed  6 лет назад +1

      FOG I think is Fields of Glory - another historical wargame. I have never played it.
      However, That is a great army deal. In the Hail Caesar army lists, 16 hastati can be two units, 16 principes can be two units, 16 velites can be two, and 8 can be 1 - that thus means you get a whole division and that deal would work lovely for Hail Caesar.
      You could also field those as standard frontage units of two ranks, though you'd be short 8 triarii if you follow standard frontages... of course, you dont have to use points, you can always make and adjust units and play without points. Many do!
      Thanks for the question! Best Regards and thanks !

    Is there any reason not to simply cut the frontline width in half? Our game group is considering playing HC but the number of figures for warbands, for example, scares many away.

    • @carthagemustbedestroyed
      @carthagemustbedestroyed  2 года назад +1

      Hey there. Luckily with hail caesar you could easily adjust And change the sizes of units. The game works fine with a single row of units or you could adjust the width total. As long as everyone agrees to the sizing it works out wonderfully.

    What size would the roman cav be?

    • @carthagemustbedestroyed
      @carthagemustbedestroyed  6 лет назад

      In Hail Caesar Republican Roman Cavalry is a weak point for them if you use native troops. I am Using about 6 models a unit for small cav units, so I only get a frontage of 75-80 mm as they are all small. Light cavalry regardless of being native or foreign troops will operate the same as any type of light cav armed with Javelins. They do, however, have small "Medium cavalry" units, which makes them unique unlike most armies, but I feel this is rather useless, as they cannot go into open order and are basically just beefed up lights cavalry.
      It is much better to thus take small Numidian units, small Tarentine Cavalry units, or Gallic / Spanish medium cavalry at the standard unit size. The Romans did this historically from my understanding - use other auxiliary or mercenary cavalry. The other great thing in the Republican army is that Cavalry do not need to be in divisions made up of solely native troops - that is, you can have a unit of Gallic Cavalry in the same division as your Hastati, Principes and Trairii mixed division, but if you take any infantry of any sort, you need to make a division that's made up of only native troops. I want to take some gallic warbands with me as mercenary troops, so I have a division which is two warbands, one gallic medium cavalry, and one gallic light cavalry, just to follow the proper rules in the army list book. But if you dont want to take foreign infantry, then whatever cavalry you want to take is fine, as long as 50% of them are light! Numidians are great choices, I think!
      Thanks for the question! Hope my big rant answered it!

      Victrix will soon release some republican cavalry, so if you like them you can wait and see what comes out ;)

      I have 32 figs of Spanish scutarii painted plus 12 Spanish caetrati. Victorix has Spanish cav. so I might go that way. I am painting these to sell as my wargaming club died out about 15 years ago. I am retired and
      and it gives me something to do and maybe make some money. I have almost finished painting a Punic War Roman army of sixteen each line with command for each and a leader figure and an guy with an Eagle to be with him. The velites is still to be done I ordered that box you had for a prize, lol. I don't think I will base them as that will not be like the buyers other armies. Do you think I need more Spanish? I really
      appreciate your advice.

    • @carthagemustbedestroyed
      @carthagemustbedestroyed  6 лет назад

      sounds like you have a nice division of spanish mercenaries there. I'd focus with Romans personally. If you follow the HC lists then only 50% of the infantry forces can be non-Roman (or latin as describe) and I find the Romans themselves are already quite tough with their pilum. So if you get that Spanish cavalry for a medium cavalry choice and have a whole spanish division, and then the rest of the army Roman you're probably set!
