Netting becomes art at new St. Pete Pier

  • The sculpture is clear, sturdy, and light, yet, it’s also none of those things. The featured artwork at the St. Pete Pier is open to interpretation, at the insistence of the creator.
    Janet Echelman designed the net-like piece made from 180 miles of knotted high-tech twine. The netting weighs 5,000 pounds, stretches over 400 feet, and hangs 72 feet high.

    Just what the birds were dreaming of. What a stupid idea. It looks ridiculous and is not a sculpture. It's an over priced net.

    It's a huge disappointment. I thought it would be more dramatic but it's very uninteresting. The lights just aren't bright enough.
