One massive detail you missed on the door install Ron. I've done cast in place doors like that as my trade. When you are preparing those frames to be installed into the wall forms... you are going to have calls calling you flipping out and losing their minds. What I was taught is to get red or blue tuck tape and some styrofoam insulation like the pink or blue stuff. You cut pieces of styrofoam to cover the hinges and door closers (where you plan to screw them to the frames) and tuck tape them over those locations. Seal up the styrofoam pieces they only need to be 1/2"thick but need to seal up where you plan on putting screws into the frame. If you dont when the concrete is poured you will likely get concrete seeping out of the screw holes sealing them up with concrete.
Take my word for it, you want to get screamed at by a door installer dont put anything around those screw holes and door catch. When they go to install those doors and the screw holes for hinges are full of concrete you will hear about it. When I was an apprentice I forgot to do that only one time. It is a lesson I vowed to never ever repeat. 😢😢😢

I used to work in heavy construction. They rent and sell the same kind of forms to make the molds for the Israeli bomb shelter right here in Texas.
We used them building a heavy industrial basement at a factory that now has 4 huge silos on top of the basement wich is anchored 35 feet below ground, and has a large building on top of the silos

You should sell kits to install vault type shelters in existing basements, with two layers of walls and ceilings to pour concrete or sand. If you’re not in a blast zone, it would work. There is a good write up on the castle bravo test that went bigger than planned. The detonation crew had to shelter in place, in an above ground bunker 20 miles away. The area with sand stacked up again against the outside wall was safe. They all lived.

Put rebar in the block cavities, and fill the cavities with concrete. Skim coat the face of the block with cement infused with fiberglass fibers.

23:22 For the internal finish, you'd be better off running all the electrical and plumbing inside the rebar before you pour, and then pulling cable later. Same as ICF construction. There's no point in tacking on drywall.

    Ron getting some ideas?
Because yeah I would love an add-on like that; honestly I would love it in the ground but the size is perfect and I've always been a fan of concrete.
I've done footings, foundations and floors for homes with basements, smaller homes I couldn't see it ever being over $10-20K for what I just mentioned. I would look at the invoices for each job. This was with water, sewer and electrical ran into the floor of the basement. Of course this isn't adding in labor and tools\forms etc.. but it is counting rebar and window wells, door frames (for the cellar)
Concrete at that time was $100-130 per yard, its been a while but still.
Footing was normally 1-2 trucks unless it was formed all wacked and deep then we had to order another truck.
Walls and floors were always around 3-8 trucks, depending on the size of the home.

I could see the piping the door frame and the shutter work is being standard equipment. The other stuff just looks like standard equipment for pouring concrete walls. Of course it would have to be up to standard building codes depending on the area. We used to construct stuff like that for the railroad we would make concrete walls to support old bridges for trains. We would have to redo everything every time we would have to buy a new sheeting every single time. They wouldn't let us spray motor oil on or anything like you see guys doing for standard homes it had to be brand new stuff

What I wonder is if these bunkers will withstand a RPG rocket fired into the walls?
In the high rise buildings I don’t understand why one would go into such lengths of adding shelters in them.having seem what one well placed JDAM will collapse parts of the structures. How will a shelter protect one in such a situation? I can see these protecting one from tornadoes but little good in protecting you in a nuke blast. Those underground bunkers will protect you from most radioactive fallout.

Ron is there an advantage for this design relative to the Swiss method? I'd be interested to understand if this is suitable or advantageous for below-ground construction relative to your prefab safe cellar options etc. I am planning an install for my home in Missouri and am trying to sort out which style makes the most sense to bury in my backyard and connect to an existing basement vault by cutting through the foundation/basement concrete. Goal would be enough space for bunks, food storage, and connecting to a new well on the property for water and into my existing solar power.

You need mass in the door for radiation, the rest is what is cheaper. You would need 2ft of soil over the roof of steel or 12in of concrete so would it be deep enough on your house.

thanks. My contractor reckons that a simple reinforced concrete pour with steel roof and concrete on top, all built on 3 feet of gravel and french drain with a further 2-3 feet of earth above should be $30k. That does not include an air filtration system etc, so would likely need to source from Ron I guess. I already have a steel door in my home, but I guess I would need an additional door for the bunker that is at least gas tight... Basically will have a 6 foot "tunnel" leading from my existing basement foundation wall into the backyard and connecting a standalone 1000 square foot bunker underground. The tunnel will slope down with stairs, and I guess I will shoot for 9ish foot ceilings in the bunker to allow for maybe underfloor storage? Still debating the exact dimensions, but roughly that is the plan. @@That1ufo

    Ron - Question below 👇🏽
Indeed a long video; which is okay, but it also takes the record for thee all hated and ignored ads!
Make DIY plans and send them ASAP! Many of us have worked multiple trades and have some experience.
Many mentions in the comment section here: The ease of building with ICF blocks. Correct me if I’m wrong, but ICF blocks have a set internal void / space and existing rebar which is engineered for another purpose. Hence, they’re specifically engineered for a purpose and that purpose is not to take a blast, but instead to insulate against the elements, and support a house. Moreover, the cost of such an ICF block versus concrete poured is a consideration. Then there’s engineered sizes, placement of, spacing of and specific methods of the installation of rebar. This matters!
Question: The shelters; in Israel, as seen in this video that are being built on roof tops of apartments … How viable are they if a bomb takes out the apartment building on which they’re erected?

Be sure to ground it well because I’ve seen a guy here on RUclips and he had problems with lightning

I would think an "easy" method to building a concrete bunker, above or underground, would be to rely on 6 to 12" ICF blocks with conduits for the air system ?

You can diy this with 12' block cut webs out half way for bond beam. Double 5/8" rebar. Fill with concrete. Easier to retrofit in basement with nozy neighbors. 🍻🇺🇸

yeah after watching this ur better off learning basic concrete forming in North America..they are not doing anything at all special...what you are doing with ur underground bunkers is great...you just need to adapt the doors and air system for above ground use..and if they want window you can just get the right type of window to apply...actually better windown design probably they want they have in this video...in a building it makes sense to possibly have windows but on a ground level unit its to easy to break in from..need better design..which a window is in closed in a unit that has a steel drop down panel .

would these withstand wildfires? i live in an area prone to that and was wondering how these would fair in those conditions.

With such conditions I would imagine you would need air intakes and outtakes rather high off the ground.
And just about every type of filtration that is available.
An important example being a catalyst that could convert carbon monoxide into less harmful carbon dioxide.

57:50 It's not gas tight if the floor is level with the door. Presumably someone removed the lower sill edging that the gasket seals against

The doors are fine for gun/safe rooms against home invasion, but if your going to all that effort its silly not to have the concrete filled door for radiation.
