  • Cockpit scenes from the Dash 8 -100 landing in Røst, the outernmost island of the Lofoten archipelago. The approach and landing was hand flown by the captain himself, in beautiful weather!

    Pay attention to the F/O's flow starting with him locking the controls during deceleration. He's busy!

      They are parked 30 seconds after touch down, so he doesn’t have a lot of time 😂

    just curious, how do you navigate in the clouds and with low visability in this type of plane?

    • @ArcticPilot
      @ArcticPilot  8 лет назад

      +Pascal Dettwiler This aircraft has several different navigation systems, including the old fashioned radio navigation aids. It also has a flight management system, with computers that guide the pilots and autopilot on the right path. In clouds an low vis the pilots have screens right in front of them that present the information they need to navigate safely.

      +ArcticPilot That was quick, thanks. The reason I was wondering is because I have been on some bad weather flights into førde and sogndal in the dash 8 100 and when seeing the cockpit I couldn't spot any screens or so, but I guess I've been in good hands :)

      They are advised by the Air Traffic Control during the flight. But before each flight they are briefed carefully about the potential weather build ups along their planned route and they take necessary actions if needed to.

    Didn't realize they put the gust lock on so soon after touchdown

    After watching a view of these Dash 8 videos and wondering why the pilot monitoring has to guard the power levers on short final, I think I've figured out why. It's because of the design of the reverse thrust activation. Rather than a distinct lever like on a 747 for example, the pilot on a Dash 8 simply pulls the power lever back past idle. The pilot monitoring has to guard them on approach so that the pilot flying doesn't accidentally engage the reverse thrust while the plane is still airborne. Am I right? Can anyone confirm?

    • @ArcticPilot
      @ArcticPilot  5 лет назад +2

      turbofan450 You might be right! Cause that's happened before on the Dash 8 with nearly catastrophic consequences

      I once flew with the Dash 8 where they used the reverse thrust in-air on the approach. It is weird to feel like braking when you are flying downwards and the sound change is awesome.

      Well i once used the reverse on the virtualcol dash 8 100 from fsx and i felt like the plane was floating

      3 years later but it came up in my recommended so here we go. There are gates on the power lever so you cant accidentally put it into reverse thrust. There are two gate release triggers below the power lever handgrips that you pull up to transition past a gate.
      Furthermore, you almost never use reverse thrust on a Dash 8, its just not needed outside some very specific situations. In this video, the pilots put the propellers into DISC, which decreases the blade angles to 1.5 degrees, effectively stopping them from generating thrust.
      Discing the propellers together with spoilers and break makes the Dash 8 a very fast stopping plane even without reverse thrust.

      @@Frangus_ Yep, same explanation I was given by a friend who flew Q400s for Horizon/Alaska. He said discing was all they ever needed for more than adequate stopping power; and besides that, engaging reverse thrust would likely send the passengers' heads crashing into the seatbacks in front of them.
