  • A short tour around the Cruise line port area of San Diego, focusing on the Disney Wonder. I'm a Disney fan looking forward to my second cruise on the Disney Wonder. I've noticed the same questions about San Diego being asked repeatedly in the FaceBook groups I follow, so I thought maybe a short video would help familiarize people with the area.
    Places mentioned:
    Long-term cruise parking: portofsandiego.org
    San Diego Maritime Museum: sdmaritime.org
    U.S.S. Midway Museum: midway.org
Closest hotels: Intercontinental San Diego, Residence Inn San Diego Downtown/Bayfront, Springhill Suites San Diego Downtown/Bayfront, Wyndham San Diego Bayside
    Portside Pier: Portsidepier.com
    Disney Cruise Line: Disneycruise.disney.go.com
San Diego Airport is less than 10 minutes from the pier, approximately 2 miles north.
Rail travel to the Santa Fe Depot, two blocks east of the cruise ship terminals. Amtrak, Coaster, Surfliner, and MTS trolleys stop here. Watch for closures on Amtrak and the Coaster and Surfliner due to emergency repairs to tracks.
This is what I experienced, your mileage may vary. Drop questions in the comments and I'll try to answer.

Thank you for taking the time to make this video! It is helpful to visualize the port area and know what we will be facing. We are staying at the Hampton Inn Downtown and planning to walk to the port from there.

Thank you! The Hampton Inn is a great choice. The walking distance is about the same as the start of my walk to the pier, but coming from the other direction. You’re behind the County offices (which right now is under scaffolding) and Waterfront Park. Lots of great food in Little Italy just east of there!

Thanks so much. A picture is worth a thousand words in this case.
We're up in Los Angeles and it's been a few years since we've been down there. I figured it was close to the Midway. We're sailing on Holland America in November.

Hi thank you so much for posting this video! Super helpful! Also what’s a good parking location for those going on a cruise soon? I’m finding it hard to find a location to park

Start at www.portofsandiego.org/coming-and-going/parking-and-transportation/longterm-cruise-parking. If those are full, the airport parking companies are options. Aladdin and Park ‘n Fly are two to check. I believe they have shuttles to the port. Good luck!

Can you tell us how your actual boarding day went?

Great question! We were able to get a Port Arrival Time of 12 noon (earliest offered for non-concierge on this day). At about 11:15 I dropped my family and luggage off in front of the terminal building (although I was directed into the wrong traffic line by the guard at the entrance, porters came and helped unload the bags from the car onto their dollies). While I was parking the car at BRIC South (reserved months in advance), I got a text from my husband saying to come directly into the terminal. My mom was using her cane, and when the port people saw that, they quickly offered her a wheelchair and priority access. So, unexpectedly, I didn't have to wait outside.
I will say the process to board was pretty simple. Outside, you're given a ticket (just like a carnival or raffle ticket) to say that your PAT was checked. You give that to the person at the door to the terminal building. Then you get in line to get your boarding QR code scanned - one per stateroom. Then standard TSA security checkpoint for carry-on bags and metal detectors. Another line where they then check your boarding documents (passport/ID). Another room with 3 identical backdrops and photographers for your first official photos, and then up the gangway! We were whisked through because of the wheelchair, but from what I saw the lines were quick moving and well staffed. The slowest part was the ID check, as the computer connection isn't very fast. From door to ship took no more than 15 minutes. Just keep your paperwork (the QR code you get when you get your port arrival time, and your ID's for all your party) ready and organized!
Also, it is a pretty long walk through the building. There are both an escalator and an elevator to get up to the gangplank. There were 3 or 4 people ready to help with wheelchairs when we arrived, but they were quickly put to work. Plenty of chairs to wait for one to return.
      Enjoy your cruise!!

@@patinthehat6026 thank you so much for replying! We are excited to try a new port and some new destinations before the Wonder moves to her new home down under.

Worst cruise port I’ve ever been in. January 6th 2023 two ship in at the same time. average wait standing in line was 3-1/2 hours. This port can not handle two ships at the same time.

Sorry to hear your experience was so terrible. Was there any particular area that slowed down the lines to make your wait so long?
