Kobold Press makes amazing 5e content and the Midgard setting is so interesting. All their Creature Codex books make great monster alternatives to any game.
After killing a Wyvern, I took the stinger back to town. I found someone who was able to work with the venom sack and made me 10 vials of poison that I could use on a weapon. Video games with crafting helped me come up with that idea. Players and DMS alike should feel free to draw inspiration on what to do from completely different games.
That's the first thing my son did when I taught him DnD we home brewed it almost completely. Made his own world, and used his love of Minecraft and Monster Hunter as inspiration. It was very crafting focused. With gear made from monster types etc. He took it to friends and started DMing for them with his game
As someone who tosses a good amount of magic items in their games this book is great. I picked it up some time back. Good stuff in it. Honestly, when it comes to Kobold Press you cant go wrong. They put out really good content. I would even say far better then what Wizards puts out.
Ah, the best type of 5E content: the kind not made by WotC. This looks like a great resource, to use straight-up or to convert to whatever your system of choice.
Kobold press is killing it with their quality books for 5e! And now that they’ve drawn in the Professor into their mad schemes, even better! Check out the Frungilator, it was my groups favorite!
Hey, thanks! It was great to work with Kobald Press. Very nice people. If you like my style, check out my latest video: ruclips.net/video/95zr1mmx4vM/видео.html

Love that book, wish I picked up the physical copy when I backed it. One of my favorite magic items: The lantern whose light can be viewed by up to five people the bearer designates.
Great review as always, Professor. I too love weird and wondrous items made from exotic materials with sometimes bizarre effects. I also love consumable yet potent items, especially potions and wands. Puts a bunch of power in the hands of the PCs but if they mismanage it, it can end badly….
This is my first purchase from Kobold Press. Having Professor and Sly Flourish as contributors help spur my purchase, but it is a FANTASTIC resource for magic item ideas. I like the mix of low powered and super powerful items. I love magic musical instruments and there is something for every DM in here and the production, writing, and art is on or above par with anything from WOTC. The only thing holding me back from buying the Kobold Press monster books is ... which one to get??
Looks like a great book. My cleric of knowledge is already eyeing the Verses of Vengeance. Think it’s funny you are reviewing a book on magic items after you said if your players found a magic item they would throw it in a lake.
I back this so fast! So many of my favorite creators and Kobold is a great publisher, no Brainerd. Adds so much needed fun to items in 5e. I'm almost done coding a little Python app to roll the random tables in the back.
On one hand, it looks fantastic and is bound to be a great source of inspiration, but on the other hand, it is so much content for something that doesn't come up that much (if ever !) in my games haha. I wonder about you as well Professor, since you don't seem to include magical items extensively in your own games.
@@cybrim1 precisely, and that's my point. Do we need to buy a very specific supplement, as polished as it might be, if only to use two or three entries from it ? That's why I tend to stay away from overly specific supplements, even quality ones.

The Vault of Magic is awesome. I gave my NPC Ranger (an enemy) some Angry Hornet arrows and used them against the PCs. Machine gun and ripped to pieces are phrases that spring to mind.
If you like grim dark fantasy as much as I do, I highly recommend you take a look at the Berzerk manga by Kentaro Miura as well as its two animes from 1997 and 2016. Great stuff. I have never seen a darker fantasy than that from Kentaro Miura.
Anyone else having problem with the discount code? Telling me it's not applicable to selected product (I tried both the hard cover and soft cover preorder)
To my knowledge, Vault of Magic is the first 3rd party book I ever bought for D&D, because it reminded me of the 3.5 Magic Item Compendium, which was THE most important book to our party when we ran Pathfinder's Rise of the Runelords. I can't say I'm disappointed, a few items are even old friends.
As always, I love your work. I am meh on products like this, is USD 44.00 for the PDF and and hard copy, worth it.... The real news is the availability of on-line support for the Roll20, LFG and Shard platforms, but again USD 30.00... hmm. Another great review! Thanks.
I really like the look of this, and I have to say Kobold Press does a great job with their products. I use the Midgard Heroes Handbook a lot in my games, despite using a homebrew setting. I'd love to hear your thoughts on the HH and some of their other products.
That Tome that can be a shield or weapon was cool. I agree that monsters' corpses should be harvestable. Like, the blood and kidneys of a manticore has to be magical and valuable, right?
This reminds me a bit of Cyran's Magnificent Walking Marketplace, which I'm a backer of on Kickstarter. I'm eager for its release and really hope Professor Dungeon Craft reviews it.
I love armor and weapons made from monsters. I would like a book that has a chart on harvesting monster parts to produce magic items potions weapons etc. I've seen little bits here and there but I want like a full on chard / table system.

Not to mention WoTC is sanitizing their content to a point where if you want gritty mature content you have to go to third party sources. This whole "calling x monster evil is problematic" mess is making their content vanilla.
The fact that most magic weapons and armor is D&D have a standard mechanic - +x to hit/dmg/AC - makes them so boring. I understand why this is so.
