Taxidermist here! You're doing great. There are a few ways to make it a little easier but overall, great job! If you ever need any advice, I'd love to help you out!
I really want to learn to do this it's so cool!
Question for you: Why do taxidermists entirely repaint fish like that? As an aquarist, preserving my pets has always been something I'd like to do but I don't entirely get why the whole thing is repainted. Do the colors just fade?
@@jikkermanccini It will turn almost solid white if you don't paint it. The color will leave with age. Even the paint will fade over time
@@jikkermanccini
Hi! Thats a great question. The natural colors will fade and turn mucky and you will loose all the detail. Even UV protective paint only preserves them a little while.
Hi! Another question- I'm kind of struggling to see the point of the fish skin? Like if there's going to be a ton of clay and paint on top of it anyways, why not make the fish from scratch? (Though I guess there is a lot of skin texture that seems really hard to replicate?) I get filling in holes and damage spots- my aunt taxidermies mammals and will fill in patches of the fur or cartilage that were damaged by the process- but painting over the fish and covering a ton of the head with clay seems to me to go against the purpose of preserving the fish?
Do I like Taxidermy? No. Do I like fish? Not really. Am I ever going to Taxidermy a fish? Never. Did I watch the whole thing because Bobby's the best? Hell yeh! 😂
Same here 😂

I Kind of like fish tho 😊
Hell yeah..
because obviously bobby is not a tutorial channel
Leave it to you to choose the hardest thing to taxidermy for his first attempt. Love you man and thanks for making us laugh and learn.
How is it the hardest??
@@adalyn648 most fish have very thin tender skin + must remain moist to retain shape, so they are hard to taxidermy, much like amphibians
birds are also a pain in the ass given their thin skin and feathers
@@9999bitz oh. That makes sense. Thanks for the reply
Out of curiosity, what would be the easiest? I'm guessing something like a crab?

It was like his brain-to-mouth filter, rusty and cobwebbed from long, LONG years of disuse, lurched into action to save him and itself at the very last instant. :D
I thought the title was a joke and Bobby was actually going to make a realistic fish out of dirt or bubblegum as he is the MacGyver of art, but it was an accurate title.
Simply the most incredible artist iv ever seen
Video just starts with him answering "no" and he carves one out of wewd instead 😂
Taxidermy on fish is really difficult from what I heard but you are doing amazing! You did an amazing job for your first ever taxidermy peice
Bobby's first try is better than what is on display in fishing clubs...
I can just imagine Bobby seeing a fish and thinking out loud about taxidermying it.
"I waynt that."
aye waynna taxydermy yew
The people at the grocery store definitely had a story to tell when they went home.
Dude!!!! You did a better job on your first try at taxidermy than a lot of people are doing after years of doing this professionally! You are one of the most talented people I’ve ever seen and I fully believe there’s nothing you can’t do!
Hey there, i wantet to thank you.
Years ago when i was in....9th grade or so i found you because of your majoras mask project.
Pretty quickly i was fascinated by your work and ive probably seen all of your videos by now.
Youve inspired me to follow my passion for art, starting with just drawing and painting but then also woodwork, stonework and eventually even bones and actual blacksmithing. I got a rotary carver from a friend, pretty weai one tho and whenever i get a creative idea and also have time, i will disappear into the garage for about 10h and make something.
Now i am in uni, studying design and game art and it is largely because of when i was in a bad place back in 9th grade, i found your channel and your positivity and creativity helped me and inspired me. So thank you for that and thank you for being honest and real about your projects and how sometimes, stuff fails but that thats not the end and you can still create amazing stuff out of failed ideas and how if something isnt working, to try a different approach.
cool
I got sucked in by that video aswell, spent all this time typing that for nothing… damn!
@@Potato-VR the Majoras mask project was great, right? Some day I’ll recreate it for my self.
I’m sorry to hear you spent a long time typing for nothing (I assume you were talking about a message you were typing. If not….ye English is not my first language and social cues etc aren’t exactly my streangth)
That was the same video that got me hooked on Bobby Duke. He's such an inspiration to so many. Thank you, Bobby!
@@EchoNoctua he really is
The way Bobby acts in public is what we all think about doing, but only he is ballsy enough to actually do it. This is why we love you, Bobby!
For the love of god, no. When you just want to get through the line nothing is more annoying that someone who wants to chit-chat with the cashier. If you want to go off-script, please stick to off hours and be mindful of your surroundings.
Absolutely not.
This certainly wasn't on my Bobby Dukes bingo card, but most of your projects rarely are, always a surprise, always appreciated
🤣🤣🤣 that’s kind of the point isn’t is? If Bobby did the things we all had on our Bobby dukes bingo card then it wouldn’t be a Bobby dukes video! ❤
Wait, I wanna know whats on your card 😅😂
I love how when people ask if you caught it you’ll answer with “no I bought it dead from the supermarket” 😂

Made me click off the video. Promoting trash like this to your viewers makes you basically logan paul in my eyes.
@@catso9555 It's definitly a vile thing to do, i mean it's one thing to like, advert raid to your viewers to pay your rent.
But to do a sponsor for a company that preys on your mentally unwell viewers? That's just vile
I just hope that he doesn't actually want to team up with them and it's just contractual obligation bs, but I kinda doubt it :/
He’s promoting it because when he was going through depression, they helped him out. Better health has scammed a lot of people, but they have also helped a lot of people. It’s not great I know, but that’s just a little explanation.

I cannot believe people still accept BetterHelp sponsorships. There's a reason as to why popular RUclipsrs no longer accept sponsorships from this company. Their official statement was literally 5 two-sentence tweets saying: we did nothing wrong! 🤡 What a joke! Instead of pulling back and fixing their sh&t, they're still pushing more and more sponsorships and ads

@@Littlewings1211 oh agreed it is probably ineffective at best, but I don't believe the allegations are as true. And for some creators who have families to feed and people who look upto them, it is unfair of us to just push them off because they got paid by someone who is on the line of ethics.
@@shauryakumar7322 as someone who tried to use it before the controversy started i can say it's not just infective but downright harmful.
Bobby, please drop the betterhelp sponsorship deal already
he could be locked in contractually, which means x amount of sponsor plugs to do
its a common thing ive seen people take on the betterhelp scam sponsor, realise their fanbase hates them immediately then cant back out after agreeing to more plugs. Im sure Bobbys aware how nasty they can be by now
I love that most people would get a fish they caught taxidermyed, but bobby just went and bought a fish from the store to taxidermy it. Just to prove he could. That's the vibe I stay here for.
what a beauty! very well done, sir! my niche interest colliding with my favorite artist was not something i expected this month, i’m tickled pink!
Did not think...i would spend my sunday morning watching boby stuff a fish skin with foam, clay, and caulk.
Your videos feel so 2013 & that’s what I grew up with so your channel has been really comforting for me. Not only that but you make such awesome art, everything you touch turns to gold. Keep it up!!
Bobby, please stop shilling Better Help :( They don't require licensed therapists and they sell your data! It's a really bad service and has often just made people's issues worse because of unprofessional "therapists."
Bobby can shill all he needs to pay the bills, as long as no one uses the service. NO ONE USE THE SERVICE
He's wearing a brawndo shirt that is easily found on temu. Don't ask how I know and do with that info what you will. Pretty much everyone everywhere steals and sells your data these days.
Bro is either selling out his audience for the juicy sponsor money, or he doesn't look into the companies he takes sponsors from. Either way, not a guy I'll be watching more of.
I’ve seen some creators justify working with them by saying that BH has “assured” them that they’re better now. like????? even if that were true, I don’t see how BH could ever be ethical. they’re making too much money for what they’re supposed to be. they’re most definitely taking advantage of the vulnerable.

So happy to see something new from you, and whatta surprise to boot. I've always been fascinated with taxidermy & had wondered before how a fish was kept plump looking. Had no idea clay-sculpt & painting was involved (which explains the flaming red gills you always see). This was very informative & a hoot to watch as always. Thanks!
Well done Bobby... absolutely love your channel and have done since I found it back in your early days.. much much love sent from another Bobby in London
The accent at the end almost had me convinced you caught this fish yourself. It was so great!! Thanks for another fascinating project by the master of wewd himself. Wishing you the best Bobby!
I came to Bobby Duke Arts randomly because my son was on a binge watching Sonic clay videos. Now I'm here, alone, watching his new content.
Keep being you, Bobby.
I NEVER thought I’d EVER watch a fish taxidermy video. And I most definitely didn’t think I’d be grinning ear to ear by the end of it. Well done! (And thanks for leaving the skinning part out)
Hey Bobby, thanks for another entertaining video. With carving foam, ive found a zest grater works really well for carving. A nice controlled material removal and different garte aggresiveness can sculpt very well.
I'm gonna pass this info along to my friend who makes fur suits. The heads always need so much finesse it's a pain
You only called his name twice 6:47 you must say it 3x for it to work.
Now this is what real art is
as a taxidermist, you did good! there is so many different ways to do the process, its a bit up to personal preference sometimes (like I prefer making forms from wood wool rather than foam, some do it with wood, so on), your first attempt was wayyy better than mine 😂
7:47 "never carve towards yourself... EVER.." - bobby
its funnier cause you can see how he literally carved towards himself
3 seconds later; almost decapitates a finger
Didn't better help sell their patient's data to advertisers?
The fish turned out perfect. What if you made a number of different fish and had them swimming across your wall.
It’s wonderful watching you grow as an artist. First you made an under Seaworld and use clay to make your fish. And now this.
Thank you again for letting us watch the progression of your artistic talent.
P.S.
I can’t wait to get the kit to make my wooden knife.
It's way too green.
I have no idea why you popped up on my feed but that whole process was fascinating and you were a hoot!
Idk what’s crazier you trying to taxidermy a fish or posting this at 1:30am lol
Omg riiiight?!?! Lieekk, soOOoOoOoOO Le CrAzY!! Wow!!!!
After a good sleep and watching the video I can confirm that posting it at 1:30 am was much crazier lol

now we need you to carve and paint a wewd fish, with epoxy fins, and put lights in it, where the fins light up. you are very talented.
Oh all the things I have ever seen Bobby do, somehow it is mixing borax without gloves on that takes the cake.
Borax isn't dangerous, it can cause irritation if you are sensitive to it
South Asian here. I know most of the wierd veggies shown in the start, so here's a handy guide.
0:06 - loofah plant (wetakolu) you can male a curry out of it. It's also the same thing that makes those natural loofah. You have to let it fully mature and dry in the vine and peel to reveal the fibers. We eat it when the fruit is young so no fibres developed yet (for the most part)
0:15 - bitter gourd (katavila) really bitter.... gourd. No other way to say it. You can cut it into really tiny pieces and make a dense salad. My mom makes a curry but it's bitter and idk why people eat these honestly. In either case, you have to use something sour to cut through the bitterness. People say it's good for lowering your blood sugar. And other studmff too because it's a really green vegetable.
0:48 - Aloe Vera (komarika) but most people know this. Another bitter thing that idk why people eat this. To compliment the bitterness, its simy too. My culture doesn't eat this as a food really, but we use this for traditional medicine. So you might end up having to eat some anyway. Probably there are some east Asian cousins that have Aloe Vera based food.
0:50 - Idk the English name (murunga) its just a vegetable. The inside is like beans and tastes pretty much the same too. But you can't eat the peel it's really woody. We cook it in a curry (no surprises here) and you have to scrape the flesh from the peel. Bit annoying, but it's really nice. Traditionally considered to cool down the body. Fun fact- these grow in really tall trees that are really fragile. It doesn't really have a wood and these trees are fist things to come down when there is a fast wind.
I’m genuinely always fascinated with how good everything of yours comes out! Killin it!!!!
Man, I can't stop laughing at the picture of your dog with your sock on its head. The look he gave you! XD
Aside from that, you always impress me with your talents. You're so skilled, really impressive! For a first time doing taxidermy on a fish, that's such an awesome result!
You and your family, stay safe! Take care! Cheers from France!
Says he has never done this before, then proceeds to smash it out of the park 🐟
He's got a few years of art making under his belt. While not all of it translates, his measuring skills certainly did.
I married a Chinese angel 15 years ago. The first time we went to an Asian grocery store, we spent 5 hours, just me looking at everything. It was amazing. Wish I had your artistic ability’s. Your good. I have watched a lot of your videos. You create beautiful art. Thank you.
I love watching your 'outings'. Lol
You guys look like you have a great time. 🤙 Rock on Bobby
Apart from the basic texture of the scales...what did the fish give you that you did not recreate yourself?
You basically remodelled the finns, you made the entire shaping, you painted the complete body.
I mean if you made this thing from scratch, it would have just taken the time to carve the scales into the basic material.
This looked like SO much work!
And even if at the start i think: "Yeah, i think he can do this" like every other project, the finished result is at least 300% above what i imagined.
Outstanding!
What's up with Better Help? People saying they are a problem or something? Are they a scam like other sponsors that are fake?
From what I heard (either through yt or reddit) the better help therapists arent all licenced profesionals (or they specialise in a specific type of therapy), they don't always give the right type of therapy to the right person, canceling is hell, and it just doesn't seem like its worth the money.
@@RaTheArtist Oh OK. Thanks for clearing that up.
There are so many serious problems with them, I highly recommend you look further into it. Among these issues are: some therapists on the platform not being licensed professionals (despite BetterHelp's promises otherwise), therapists on there being overstretched, the fact that they advertise that "hey! On our platform you can message your therapist any time of day if youre having a rough time!" - proper boundaries in a therapeutic setting are very important and the therapist also needs to be able to disconnect from work - and perhaps the crown jewel in the crown of shit is that they have been found to sell patients' sensitive personal medical information. Definitely a horrid company!
They also sell your private information
they also steal and sell your data

Bro if you have to include a reddit link in your description begging your audience to ignore the allegations levelled at your sponsors, ITS TIME TO PICK A NEW SPONSOR. Your audience has been begging you to ditch BetterHelp for years and you just won't. Gross.
As someone who's learning the hobby myself, I appreciate seeing this so much lol. I wet preserve with ethanol alchohol because I'm allergic to formaldehyde, but I want to learn how to tan and taxidermy stuff like this. When it came to the pinning, I do the same thing for drying my bugs to pose them 🤣 using paper, foam, trash, whatever I could get my hands on in order for the bug to hold position while drying.
it's crazy to me that betterhelp still exists
BetterHelp has to be paying good money on sponsors cause they're definitely not putting that budget into hiring real therapists😂
This. Worst place to go for genuine help.
You don't give them enough credit! They sell YOUR private health data FOR YOU so you don't have to do it yourself!
I was gonna subscribe until I saw betterhelp in the description
@ To give credit where credit is due, the video was pretty awesome, it gave me some great laughs, he made a good video. Unlike that other youtuber that made gassier soda and didn't even explain the taste and the video ended up seeming like one big plan to milk his audience with his betterhelp sponsor.
Edit: idk why youtube deletes the persons name youre trying to reply to but I was talking to @RisingRevengance
Wow I didn't realize the work that goes into taxidermy but it ended up looking really professional! Great work Bobby!
For those curious/wary of the Better Help sponsorship, go with your gut feeling. If Bobby is locked into a contract with them or honestly if he had a good experience then it makes sense as to why he is getting sponsored by them. I do hope he gets more cool sponsorships from things like Total Boat and other art supplies because I'd like to see more of the comments be about the video and not the sponsorship.
I will say if you are in a bad place mentally I do encourage reaching out to a liscensed therapist in your network if you have insurance and getting help, its nothing to be afraid of (coming from someone with anxiety and depression but working through it).
The only part about this process I don't understand is painting the entire fish to look like what it looked like before you painted it. Now it just looks fake? why not just make a fake one? It no longer looks like a real fish. Super cool video. The techniques are interesting.
I would assume that the paint is meant to make it more like it does when it's alive and swimming
Because you can't just leave the real fish in open air. The skin will shrink and start to smell really bad. That's why you have to use chemical stuff preserve it.
When a fish is taxidermied, it is often painted to accurately replicate its original colors and markings because a dead fish's skin tends to lose its vibrant coloration over time, making painting necessary to create a lifelike representation for display purposes.
Yeah it occurred to me that he did so much to transform it that he perhaps didn't need the actual fish part.
I guess it's like, just used as a template. A really rough template. The irony 😂
@Scott-hf2qz pretty much all taxidermied fish have been painted. The original colors don't hold up well.
Awesome but it would have been funny if it was like 3” . The thought of a tiny trophy 🏆 wall fish 🎣 sounds hilarious
Please don’t support better help! They have a lot of controversy, I suggest you do research!

The reason I think the white glue didn’t work was because it takes looking to dry then wood glue, giving the foam time to absorb the glue more. Letting a thin coat dry first then gluing them should work better
