  • This video describes how to design an outboard pod for your boat. It shows different designs we have used on the Monaro power boats.

Id like to know how you calculate the lift, and why the bottom of your pod doesn't follow the hull?

You can calculate moments (weight x distance) from a fixed point in the boat for all the items that will change. Subtract out the old motor, add in the new motor and pod and the buoyancy created from the pod. The outboard is much lighter than the inboard but the weight is so much further aft. You need clean water at the prop. Raising the pod up from the hull bottom gives you that. We built a boat with the motor mounted to the transom. We took a notch out of the hull to create the clean water affect. After testing we did find that the notch was too long (I think 14"). The hull would suddenly jump out of the hole at the certain speed. We filled half the notch in which corrected the problem. A lot of this is trial and error.

Sorry for the late reply. I lost my admin. person that managed the channel and I have been off it for the past year. I believe those boats use a jet drive so the hull shape is not ideal to pod it.

I'm having a hard time trying to design my my motor pod. My boat has a strange swim deck. Carver 260 1997

Sorry for the late response. I had no one managing the channel. I found a photo of the boat. You should start with a sectional drawing of the boat showing the transom, keel and swim grid. I have the advantage of having cad drawings of the motors which I can insert into my boat drawings to check clearances and positioning.

Hi ! How long is your bracket on the first boat ? Currently owning a cigarette 41 1988 i’d like to fit a 35/37 inch bracket on it but i feel like it’s too long

That one is 29". Deadrise on the transom is 14 degrees. Designed clearance to transom is about 5" when tilted up.

Sorry for the late reply but my business moved and I lost my admin person who was managing the channel. I'm just getting back to posting videos. You may have already completed this project but twin outboards would be most suitable.
