After so many years, I still think Jungle Hijinx is the best stage of any platform game, considering ambience, music, immersiveness, mechanics, storytelling. So iconic. It's this stage that first comes to mind when Donkey Kong is mentioned.
I’ll never forget the excitement playing this game for the first time in 94. That first level did such a good job of meeting that anticipation, and then raising that excitement into sheer joy. Good thing too cause I ripped the box open to get the cartridge in my SNES so there was no returning it to the store 😂 Not that I would because it was a gift but yeah, what a great first impression
Yeah jungle hi jinx, 1-1 in smb, into stage in mmx, green hill zone, are all such perfect examples of “teaching game mechanics through gameplay” that I really do miss in modern games. Like I don’t mind pop up tutorials because technically they are even in dark souls and stuff, but there’s nothing like teaching the player how to play the game by playing the game itself
So im 36 now. I remember watching my older brothers unwrapping this monster of a game on Christmas and feeling the energy. I can still remember the spine tingle the very 1st opening shot of this lvl gave me. Pure magic 🎩 ✨️
Another great video! I'm astonished you have less than 4k subs, you definitely deserve many more. My Donkey Kong bias might be playing a part but you're fast becoming one of my favorite game design channels.
He never does mention the other secrets of Jungle Hijinxs: extra life balloons up in the trees, hidden banana bunches that can be slapped out of the ground, the purpose of the animal tokens... and the level's final secret, which I didn't learn about until years later (even the official Player's Guide fails to mention it)... the two blue balloons hidden high off the too of the screen that grant you SIX extra lives.
Just recently from a random YT video, I learned that at the very end of Jungle Hijinx, there is an interesting secret. Without immediately giving it away, I remembered that as a kid, I jumped over the exit and up the hill and heard the sound of one of those bouncy tires. And I always wondered what the hell that was for. It's not like there was anything otherwise out of reach on the palm trees nearby...? ...well, turns out if you go up there while on Rambi, use the tire and then jump off of Rambi at the peak of the tire jump, you will reach a hidden barrel that shoots you into two blue ballons!
The thing that i miss most when playing other platformers is the ambience sound intertwined with the music, like they used to do in DK games. Rare was a master in reaching a certain level of immersion with ease.
Good video as always.👍 One thing I wanted to point out you put in text that Klump can only be killed by Donkey Kong's jump, but Donkey Kong can kill him with a roll attack as well and Diddy can cartwheel attack him. Krusha on the other hand can only be stopped by a jump from Donkey Kong, but I'm pretty sure NOT his roll attack. I think you mixed the two enemies up, but I could be wrong. If so sorry for the critique and I still enjoyed and look forward to your content in the future regardless.😉
When I first played this game, I had no idea what to do. I always ended up getting beat by the Gnawty. Then the second time, I pressed the Y button wondering what it would do, doing the roll attack. The third time, I pressed the B Button, doing the jump. I was slowly starting to learn how to play
Yeah this level is just perfect. The music will never get old, I play it whenever I can. It's the best Jungle music with a close second being turtle woods from Crash bandicoot 2. I really hope they put this in the Illumination DKC movie instead of the tiresome pop songs
Jungle Hijinxs is the place to farm lives, seeing the spectacle of day change to night, Riding a steel keg or Rambi and visiting Dk's house. In the Gba version after beating Very Gnawty, you might find him in Dk's house that is until the kongs scare him off. It has a memorable soundtrack. As for Lakeside Limbo it has the lives factor, Ellie, a weak soundtrack on Snes but a better soundtrack on Gba. The showing of the ability to swim and ground pound but as a first level, it can't beat Jungle Hijinxs
You had so much to say, and yet you didn't even touch on the treetop jumping, which teaches you everything you need to actually be good at this game... mastering the roll + jump ability!
@@maverickhuntermeta4954 I think it's more entertaining as background (since the gameplay isn't the focus of the video) than having black bars taking a good bunch of the video.
It's kind of dirty phrase because of other people's connotations over the years but it's a really good tutorial level. I don't mean that as a jab but rather that it lays out just about everything you can expect in game and how to do it well. Also your comment about people preferring Diddy over DK makes me think about DKC3 and not only the lack of Diddy but the resentment of Kiddy Kong. Where people not utilizing Kiddy? Maybe that's part of why he's so maligned. I know that's outside the scope of this video but I couldn't help but think about it.
One time, when my TV malfunctioned, the screen turned off, but the game was still on. I beat Jungle Hijinks without a proper screen on. That's how well it's designed as a first level. 🦧🌴🏝

I completely agree, it's my first thought too!
it's the perfect game on Super Nintendo from beginning to end. a flawless masterpiece

Jungle Hijinx and Central Highway would always be god tier intro stages
My favorite game of all time
Mine too🫱🏻🫲🏼
This needs to be a moving SSB stage.
Yes it does!

WOW! I appreciate that so much, genuinely. Thank you.
That iconic first level never gets old!
Absolutely!
This man adores DKC and I'm here for it. It's fun to hear you gush about my favorite 2D platformer 💚🍌
🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Oh, to have as much free time as Justintendo
HAHA you're not wrong
What a masterpiece of a level! Nothing comes close, maybe only the 1st level of DKC2.
"Iconography" 😉
THANK YOU!
You are delivering the real Donkey Kong December. Enjoyable content!
Thank you man! That was the intention, appreciate it🙏🏻

Your videos are amazing. Can you do this with super Mario world? Or super Mario rpg? I love your concept and outlooks!
Thank you!! :) and never say never! I adore both of those games

@@TheJustintendoI just now learn this THIRTY YEARS after it comes out???
The first level in DKC is what sold the game for me. I loved the design of it all and it caught my interest and only wanted to see more after that.
100%!!
Amazing analysis!
Jungle Hijinx is my favourite first levels alongsid with the intro levels of Mega Man X and MM Zero!
Thank you!! :)

0:32 that palm tree on the upper right was always glitched and that always bugged me
I never noticed that until right now😭
@@TheJustintendo lol i noticed that back in 1994 when I was 11
Weirdly I never noticed it before watching this video here, but before seeing your comment, and I have played this game a lot since a kid.
Honestly, the music has me feeling nostalgic but the gameplay hooks me to want to play more
Good level design is true art.
I agree!

I agree, the piece of music 'Drivin' Me Bananas' composed by Brian Tyler was supposed to be used instead of Take On Me, and it's so good!
and the only one i could beat as a 6y old 😂
Can you review Donkey Kong Jungle Beat? I think you’d enjoy it
I definitely need to play it
It really is a beautiful first level.
Agreed
Donkey Kong Country ran so Donkey Kong Country Returns and Tropical Freeze could crawl.

Yes its a great intro level, no arguement there. I still think Sonic green hill zone is just as good though.
Completely fair!
You might need to change your channel name to Donkey Kong Country Fan 😅
You're not wrong!😂😭
I think Mega Man X holds that title. Jungle Hijinxs is a great one too, though.
