Fermenting feed in winter

  • Tips and changes I made to ferment in winter.
The most challenging part is maintaining temperature in colder climates.
here is the temps you need to know
optimum fermenting temperature is 85f or29c
maximum fermenting temperature is 115f or 46c
minimum fermenting temperature is 65f or 18c
with lactic acid fermentation, temperature below 65f will start to kill certain microbes although it will not ruin it, it won't be as beneficial for your birds. This process is also anerobic "absence of oxygen" so it's important to keep your feed submerged in water. Pick a container that will make it easier for you to do this.
I moved the feed to my basement to better control the temperature, but I also considered doing it in my greenhouse or using a heating pad. Everyone's situation is different just pick a spot wher you can easily keep the temperature in the range of 65 to 115 degrees F.

Does the fermented feed freeze before the chickens eat it all?
