    The scene where Brian is caught painting graffiti and is given an impromptu Latin lesson by a centurion is painfully familiar to many of us who did Latin in British schools!

    • @simonwaugh5519
      @simonwaugh5519 3 года назад +12

      Absolutely! During my third year of Latin at Grammar School ( this was in the 1970s'), I accidentally discovered, to my horror and disgust, that only 1 year of the subject was actually required--but of course, why tell us boys that, and thus threaten the Latin teacher's job security?
      With proof of this injustice, I was able to foment a 'revolt' By 6th Year, the latin teacher was gone. 'Romanus professori exeunt!!'
      (I will note though, that I hated Latin because our teacher was....a nasty piece of work... a fascist, basically. But learning some Latin---despite the agony-- was beneficial to me in the end.)

    Brian: “You are all individuals!”

    “Yeah, Except for him.” Answers someone in the crowd.

      Fun fact: Insofar as I know, the fella who said "I'm not" was actually an extra and just said it. Because it hadn't been scripted, Terry Jones called him aside afterwards and asked if he'd mind if they used it? He responded with *No problem". To which Terry said "Well done, it's now a speaking part - you're getting paid more" and they kept it in. Sweet! Not least because it's been quoted (by us) so many times in various ways - "We're all part of the team here", "I'm not"......

      They were even more amazing when they were attacked by the conservative, religious right in Britain and around the world, and managed to display the utter hypocrisy of these old, white farts in heavy gowns. The TV debate with Cleese, Palin, Malcolm Muggeridge (a journalist and Christian Convertite) and Mervyn Stockwood (the then Bishop of Southwark), is still a classic in demonstrating religious hypocrisy, and I still believe that one debate did more to tear down the immense power of the church than anything else in history - perhaps with the exception of Irish comedian genius Dave Allen.

    I absolutely love when Brian jumps off the tower while escaping the centurions, lands inside a passing space ship, and after a space battle that causes the ship to crash, emerges in time to have the centurions continue the chase. The space interlude makes no sense whatsoever but that's what makes it so funny. It's as if the movie took a small break to enter insanity and then returned to the story.

      I thought that was satirising those who think that extra-terrestrials had somehow intervened in history, especially in religious events. I recall as a teenager in the 80s (that dates me) reading a strange book which argued that the 'manna' imentioned in the Bible had been produced from a nuclear-powered food synthesiser provided by extra-terrestrials. It was a serious book, not a joke.

      @@lbailey9607 that's a dead end mate. Nothing of the sort. Tbh if you think the technology we have now is anything to go by then consider that it's taken less then 100 years to get from steam engines to touch screen phones so erm... what happened in the few thousand years beforehand? Nothing new under the sun as they say. There's a serious possibility that what we think is high tech is actually old tech, really old... Cinemas showing it were picketed by protesting nuns and Rabbi's waving placards. When I witnessed this, it was so Pythonesque and bizarre, I thought it was a publicity stunt!

    Quick bit of trivia.
    Life of Brian was only made because George Harrison (from The Beatles) agreed to fund it, because he loved Python, loved Holy Grail and was good friends with Eric Idle.
    Not 100% sure, but I think it was George that suggested they whistle in "Always look on the bright side of life".
