I am thrilled that you post Benny's videos and even happier you are his parents. Back in 2002, eight years after my golden retriever passed, I was finally out of mourning her and researched breeds. I was an at-home mom at the time and a full-time grad student at night. So like you, I knew he would not be home alone for long periods of time. I was on waiting lists that averaged almost two years. I adopted a puppy from Hungary that needed a home. The second my son and I met him at the airport, we were absolutely smitten. My husband who was not a dog fan, became an absolute mush with him. We named him, "Janna's Diko-Atilla the Hunnie." Janna was his mom's name, and Diko means second son in Hungarian. We called him,"Diko" for short and also BUDDIEEE very often. He was an extremely healthy boy and lived a very good life til a rare stomach cancer afflicted him. He was nine when we had to put him to sleep. I never saw my husband of 34 years sob so hard and long when Diko was gone. He still hasn't cried like that since. We were so heartbroken, we agreed we would never adopt again. We took a lot of criticism for choosing a breed with typically short life spans. However, the joy and love that we have for him was more than worth it. Our son was getting older, I returned to work force, and not a day went by that I didn't think of him. Now, I am retired and have been thinking about adopting another dog. There is no other breed for us than Berners....Your videos reconfirmed our tremendous love and respect for this breed and every evening my husband and I watch your videos and teminisce about the joy Diko brought us and laugh cuz Benny and Diko are amazingly similar. After watching your happy family, we have committed to adding a Berner to ours and my husband and I need to thank you for convincing us to dare to open our hearts again. Even though I am about 20 years older (57) I look forward to about 100lbs of a squirming, panting, tail wagging lapdog who will never give me a moments privacy. Thank you again for sharing those precious moments with us. I will never burden a new Berner with Diko's legacy....until we watched you all, we were afraid we would expect all Berners to be same. There are MANY identical behaviors but there are personality differences too. Your baby loves thunder and rain. Diko would whimper on our laps. Diko LOVED deep snow and cold weather. We are from Cape Cod and sometimes get snowstorms with wind that would cause drifts several feet high and were amazed by how Diko jumped feet high through drifts, just like a bunny. That explains the over long/powerful back legs. We could easily see how they are indeed mountain dogs. I hope our new baby won't like to get as dirty as Diko....he lived to dig.... once basically dug out all the pilings of our outdoor deck. Oops😊 Diko used to have a "tell" a sparkle in his eyes would appear just before he would do something fresh or very silly. My husband swears Benny has the same signal. Sorry for bothering you with this long ramble. But you have provided us the impetus to expand our family. We lived in a huge home, with fenced yard, and private beach with Diko. We thought we needed same for another large dog. As empty nesters, we have downsized to a smaller house and yard. But you guys reminded us that is not important because he will be wherever we are. Thank you so much for sharing Benny with us. This breed is SOOOO special NO ONE understands how special unless they are lucky enough to have one. Diko like Benny, require constant love and attention. Just like you, when in bathroom if you close door.... i only did that if somebody was visiting. Diko would cry, even though I would talk to him through door. I remember a friend also a dog owner said, "I have never witnessed such sadness when he is separated from you....even for a few moments. I think if something ever happened to you Deb, Diko would commit suicide.... and I believe he is smart enough to do it." OK. I really am ending this ramble. I just appreciate being able to share with someone who knows what it's like to have a Berner in the family. Sincerely, deb
I read your whole comment! And I am so sorry for your loss! I think about it sometimes .. knowing this breed won’t live very long and not sure if I’ll be able to handle the heartbreak of losing benny! And it will be even harder having to tell everyone here on RUclips when they say comes! But for now we try to see the positives! I know Benny makes so many people smile! And I have been told so many times that people got their berner cause of Benny! Which is crazy! It’s funny how similar Berners ate with of course their own little traits. I met a berner that loved rolling in mud, Benny would never lol he likes to be clean. Another just jumps in the water and swims like crazy... as Benny struggles lol they are the best breed and you’re right you’ll never know what it’s like till you have one
Bernese Mountain Dogs, Australian Shepherds & Border Collies are all related & act very much the same. They are all so loving & energetic & make the best dogs ever! They are members of your family. We had 2 Australian Shepherds at the same time & we miss them so much! Love, love watching Bennie!
ahhh i love Benny! miss my dog, tho she aint as... sweet as Benny. Shes a goldenretriever but only lives for food, miss having a bernese mountain dog ( had one 7 years ago)
Aww such a smart boy 😘 Bernese mountain dogs are sometimes herding dogs...does he try herding you guys/or small children :)? Also I can't remember if you mentioned this in a past video, but have you guys ever thought about doing a video where he tries to pull a cart or wagon or something?
He does use his mouth to like move our hands to pet lol but that might be a normal dog thing. But yes he does push us around 😂 I’d love to try having him pull something just need to find one
Hahaha Benny! Love you! Thanks for all the info mom. I had a question about neutering. Did you get Benny neutered? If so when? If you don't mind sharing. :)

We got him neutered around 10 months due to an enlarged prostate issue

Him to turn a year
