When they mentioned "old" fans, all I thought was this is so me. When I told Pete that I had been listening to FOB for twelve years now when I finally met him, his face was priceless. I also explained that the FOB shirt that I was wearing was from Honda Civic Tour...a decade earlier.
People have to remember that Take This To Your Grave was written when Patrick Stump - the main songwriter - was around 18. The band itself was formed when he was 16 or 17. My thinking is that Fall Out Boy's sound changed as Patrick himself changed as a person, songwriter and singer. It's to be expected. He developed a taste for soul and R&B. You heard it in his solo record and you clearly hear it in Mania.
pal, patrick is not the writer. pete wrote all of the music pre hiatus and is still the primary writer although they now all contribute. learn ya shit, boi
This is true for all four of them - each has grown up, matured, taking on new roles in life (like fatherhood), etc. So yes, it makes perfect sense. They've also changed in how much of each song each member contributes, and I think that ratio continues to shift by song/album/personal preference/etc.
Interesting question since we know all four have much different personal tastes in music. From the interviews I've watched, which is a scary amount, it seems that Andy and Joe have always had influence and control, especially over their individual roles, but they have a ton more influence and control now than they did before the hiatus. For example, Patrick mentions in one interview - sorry I can't remember which - that one of the things he had to change about himself as he matured into FOB 2.0 was taking his hands off a song more and not dominating it, which set Joe up to take more control over the writing process. In another interview, I know they spoke about how I believe it was Pete suggested right at the very beginning that all four should get paid the same for their work instead of the industry standard of different pay for different roles. Patrick also mentions in a different interview how he feels - I think it was Jet Pack Blues, I know it's on AB/AP - that song is a perfect blend of the four, and AB/AP is very different from their original work, even if it's not as 'out there' as Mania seems to be. Joe has commented more than once that you can't pretend new styles of music don't exist and that you either grow and change, or you get left behind. So all this suggests to me that Andy and Joe do have their share of musical input and are invested in what FOB is doing now, and for me, I don't see a reason not to believe it. No one is limited to just one genre, either in what they produce or enjoy, and we know they are diverse and love experimenting - experimenting is what they've been doing all along.
The only ONLY fob song I’ve ever somewhat disliked is “the last of the real ones”. Every other song of theirs I’ve heard (a lot) I absolutely love, even Soul Punk and others that Patrick made. I can’t imagine hating on anything that they’ve made and it makes me sad to see everyone thinking that this is their last album... Edit: I hardly knew the Last of The Real Ones when I commented this and after listening to it a lot I actually love the song now lol
Interviewer: So this a departure from the pop-punk sound that a lot of people still associate with Fall Out Boy. Joe: I wonder why they still associate us with that!? No matter how many records away from that sound we are... NME: .*describes the band as 'pop punkers' in the video description regardless*. That's why, Joe. That's why.
im dying at andy this whole video hes just chillin with his coffee and when he tries to put it behind the couch and it makes a noise he looks all awkward lmaoo
I agree with some people on here, they seem uncomfortable and it has to be because they know that the feedback is going to be somewhat awful. I feel so bad for them, they shouldn’t feel anxious to put something out that they like because people will call them sellouts.
Look what happened to Folie that album when released was... No one got it at the time (I remember growing up being mocked for liking it and seeing it as the masterpiece it is) now it's seen as their greatest and most ambitious album to this day
It's sad when people get 'stuck' in a genre, so when the band changes genres to keep up with the industry, and to keep themselves relevant and interesting, a lot of people get upset, because its different. Some bands can keep their sound, or genre, but even then almost everyone now-a-days mixes it up to fit their ever-changing opinions, and likely so they don't start getting "boring." I know one band that I used to listen to, and still kinda do, where their music, almost every single one, is the same sound. Some are slower, or faster, but they sound the same, and I just got bored :/ When bands like say FOB, or P!ATD change it up every album, it makes it interesting, fun and new, but not everyone can see it that way sadly. I do however LOVE all the songs so far, cant wait to hear the rest of them x3
I would hesitate to say sad, because to each their own, but I do encourage folks to be open minded and try new styles and sounds. I grew up listening to the Beatles, for instance - put A Hard Day's Night next to Revolver next to Yellow Submarine, and they don't even sound like the same band, let alone the same decade. But they experimented and changed over time, and I see the same growth in FOB. Great bands don't keep putting out the same stuff over and over and over.
Foul Lily What about the people who accept change but just don't think the quality of the songs is good? I bet a huge amount of people who listen to FOB listen to Paramore too, and the response to them has been overwhelmingly positive because their new songs are amazing. It's about quality, not style, and on MANIA it's just lacking.
I guess when it comes down to that, it's also what you are willing to listen to. I personally think it's great, I dont see a lack of quality in the album, but then that might just be me ^^ I certainly did not mean to make it feel like everyone that didn't like the album thought this way, it was merely that majority of the responses Ive seen towards the album are because of this reluctance to accept change.
Everytime FOB does something I see the same type of comment "I don’t like pop" "They sound mainstream" People miss so much Pop punk go listen to Neck Deep They’ve been doing the same thing for 8 years, leave me alone

When Pete was talking about his older fans who are like I’ll stand back and just enjoy a drink and watch them from here - me that was me a few weeks ago in Cincy - I’m almost 40, my knees aren’t what they used to be from all the jumping in mosh pits in my 20s so I’m just gonna hang back and chill and listen to my boys 😂😅❤
Are Joe and Andy okay? Like Andy looks like he's trying to be attentive and is just having a hard time keeping his head up, but Joe just looks... done? It's like he doesn't want to be there. Pete's not looking too hot either, he looks _exhausted_. Patrick looks like he's carrying the band on his back during this interview. Maybe it's just because he's the youngest, I don't know. They don't look very good, they seem so... tired. Maybe it's jetlag, but they aren't looking like a team, more like four different people who were thrown into a room and told "be entertaining, I don't care how tired you are, you need to be entertaining".
Joe's actually the youngest, by like a few months. But yeah, Patrick's all smiles and not in a good way.... they all do seem really off. Generally Andy and Joe are pretty sedate people but as people are pointing out it's not a happy vibe. I mean honestly they all probably just miss their wives/girlfriends, and like, between Pete, Joe, and Patrick there are five kids who they probably haven't been able to see as much as they'd like... I hope they're all okay. If they need to take some time, like, I can't speak for everyone but I would rather they all remain friends and not a band, than a band who hates what they do.
In another interview from the same day they said their show the previous night was kinda exhausting and they had to wake up early for a day of interviews, and Patrick said he had had a lot of coffee, so that's probably what we're seeing here
as sad as i am that my questions were not asked, this was a good interview. the interviewer did not make it awkward or creepy at all. having written that, there i do not really understand why joe and andy continue to go to interviews when they always look miserable.
They are still part of the band, so it makes sense to have them all when possible. I wonder, though, if Andy really just doesn't like talking much, and if Joe is similar. Some people are just naturally more quiet, especially in public, and I imagine being on camera can make it more obvious.
@@mandy347 Joe is actually really social depending on if he's in a good mood, if he's not he's kinda like he is in this interview kinda quiet, not talking, disinterested, I think he did drop a hint that he had far less interest in this album when he admitted he didn't even know the names of the songs on the album, of course knowing what we know now that he wasn't happy working on Mania as such that makes sense, Andy is kind of a "sage" as Patrick calls him, Andy only speaks if he thinks it's super important or if everyone in the room is going to laugh, he also has social anxiety and it comes out more in group interviews so he really stays quiet in those
Replying to this YEARS later but since Joe’s book (that I’ve read,) here I can only say it may be because he wasn’t the biggest fan of (he didn’t like the outcome) of Mania… there’s more on this, but maybe that’s why!
Andy Hurley has the ability to kick everyone's ass in this interview not that he would but he totally could single handedly and he speaks so softly lol.
I never got the impression Andy *wanted* to speak much, at least on camera, and to a lesser extent Joe. Both of them, though, have become more vocal more in recent years.
I absolutely LOVE heaven’s gate. It’s literally can change me from livid to the happiness person in the world just from the first verse. I love Patrick’s voice so much! I’m 27 and have been listening to FOB since I was 12!
I want to know if they miss playing pop-punk music? I mean i know Patrick and Joe does, Andy is more metal but does the band as a whole miss playing pop-punk? I know most of the poo stiff is coming from Pete but.......
Bleach is Good for ur health there are still some pop-punk bands that still sell and are somewhat relevant like Neck Deep, State Champs, Green Days new album, Real Friends, etc. I'm sure that they could still play pop-punk and stay relevant, if they wanted to though. I think they want to experiment with different genres and just have fun testing new stuff... they all have different taste and I think they are trying to create something different from anything else. And they normally have one or two songs on their newer albums that are kinda like modern versions of their old pop punk sound
I feel like Mania is kind of awkward in terms of the new style FOB is experimenting with. It isn’t bad, but I feel like it hasn’t gone anywhere yet and the band needs to grow into their new sound a bit more.
Why do I️ get the vibe that Pete is still super into this and the rest aren’t. Even seeing them in concert he’s the only one who interacts with the crowd.
I miss Joe's fro. I think Andy does too cos the way he just stared at Joe's fro-less hair at 5:20 makes me just wanna hug him and tell him it'll grow back soon enough. lmao
I'm calling it right now, and I really hate to say it, but based on body language and the general tone of voice in the answers here...I think Mania might be their last album. Joe looks miserable, Andy looks bored, Pete and Pat look like they're smiling for the camera and trying to find ways to make things sound like all is well.
Joe and Andy have been making music with Pete Wentz for more than half their lives. Joe since the age of 15. Andy since 16. Think about that. I wonder if they can even imagine doing anything else at this point in their lives.
Watching over the video there's so much to psychoanalyze. It's fascinating. Look at the way Andy and Joe look at each other and smirk while Pete is talking around 0:56. I'm wondering if they're forced to make these appearances. What punishment could they be threatened with?
Everyone else has like tattoos with like symbols and meanings but Patrick is looking like a sweet British newspaper boy

16:18 - I don't even know what song that is - I'm deadI think they're all just a little tired
I miss Joe's fro. I think Andy does too cos the way he just stared at Joe's fro-less hair at 5:20 makes me just wanna hug him and tell him it'll grow back soon enough. lmao
LOOK AT 1:00 Andy and Joe having a private cute moment
Their devolution
I think Pete is still emo judging by the subtle emo DecayDance Records sweatshirt
But isn't his natural hair curly as well...
Why is it that Andy never talks much in interviews 🥺
5:03 OMFG Patrick why would you do that jesus
Joe just staring into oblivion 15:05
Me whenever I start thinking about the folie lyics
my fear of them moving more pop and edm is that not enough pete joe and andy

Pete Wentz: Like
Billie Joe Armstrong: Comment
lol "most of our titles are ridiculous" omfg i swear im crying
who else is loving pete’s hair
Um, no one's hating that Fall Out Boy aren't Pop Punk anymore. People are hating that they're making bad Pop music. Does no one get this?
Because people take it personally that the band they love is being criticized
13:50 SUUUUUUURRRE *cough* *cough* "Llamania"
I made like 7 comments bc I said hi to them individually and it pit them in different places 😔
5:03 Patrick’s hands 😂
that couch looks crazy uncomfortable
I'm calling it right now, and I really hate to say it, but based on body language and the general tone of voice in the answers here...I think Mania might be their last album. Joe looks miserable, Andy looks bored, Pete and Pat look like they're smiling for the camera and trying to find ways to make things sound like all is well.
Joseph Burns also some people are treating mania like they did with folie and we all know what that caused
Joe and Andy have been making music with Pete Wentz for more than half their lives. Joe since the age of 15. Andy since 16. Think about that. I wonder if they can even imagine doing anything else at this point in their lives.
Joseph Burns nooooooo i know it's true but I makes me so sad. I haven't even been to a concert yet 😭😭😭😭😭😭
They’re all exhausted, they’ve been working themselves half to death lately
Watching over the video there's so much to psychoanalyze. It's fascinating. Look at the way Andy and Joe look at each other and smirk while Pete is talking around 0:56. I'm wondering if they're forced to make these appearances. What punishment could they be threatened with?
Take a shot every time Pete says 'like'
You'll die except believer never die
8:13 ANDY YOU CUTE LITTLE FUCKER
Hi Andy!!!!!!
What the hell is happening with Pete's hair?
