Read any gardening publication ad they will almost always say that the best time of year to prune back your plants is in the autumn once the deciduous plants have dropped their leaves. Now this rule may work well for may species but there are four where this could be considered to be a cardinal sin! We expose these plants in this video!

I would add azaleas , rhododendrons , and hydrangeas to the list. Those are best pruned right after they have flowered in spring. If in doubt a good rule of thumb for anything that is grown mostly for flowers : cut back after the main bloom is over . An alternate date to prune roses February 14th , just to have fresh roses on Valentines day ! If your going to cut off the flowers anyway may as well prune and reshape them too.

    What about hydrangeas?

Hi Richard and thanks for getting in touch. Most Hydrangeas are best pruned back late autumn to early spring although it is recommended to keep the old flowers heads in place for some of the less hardy species and cultivars as this helps to protect the new growth from late frosts come the spring. So, unfortunately, Hydrangeas do not fall into the remit of this video. Kind regards Simon

Thanks RLG. Forgive my age and ignorance, but what does the camera flash icon refer to?
