Autumn is finally upon us and our gardens are starting to show the signs of slowing down. However, due to the cool wet summer this year there are still plants either in bloom or about to bloom which means seasonal interest is around for gardeners to enjoy. The trouble is that this may well be the last time that our exotic gardens are going to look any good so lets make the most of it in out exotic garden October tour!

When do you start removing your bedding plants from your borders?

Well, autumn/winter bedding plants are available in the stores now, and to be fair, I have removed my petunias recently. However my African marigolds still look good although they are definitely running out of stream. Bedding geraniums around here have also past their best. So, depending on which bedding plants you are growing you can start taking them out now. But if your plants still look good then you will probably have 2-3 weeks of ornamental value left. Great question Linda. Simon

I'm on the Surrey Hampshire border. My hostas at also putting up flower spikes, I pluck them off, as I would rather they but their energy into more greenery. But I have moved the Aoniums into the conservatory. maybe a little too early?

Hi Mark, no, I don't think so. I moved a lot of the cacti into the greenhouse last week. Not so much to avoid the cold but more so to keep the rain off them, which can be even more damaging! Simon

@@walkingtalkinggardeners Thanks Simon. My main task this month has been moving most of the Sarracenia from the greenhouse to outside for their winter cold period, and repotting any that need it. Only leaving Sarracenia minor and leucophylla inside.
