Devildriver overlord Dez Farara will readily acknowledge the basic tenet of heavy metal is to achieve the essence of power and complete freedom. At the most base level, it's a concept that can manifest itself in the form of a high-speed joyride or defeating one's antagonists, be they Frank Frazetta-rendered warriors or the guy/girl who was looking at your lover too long at the biker bar and now has a concussion and a collection of broken pool cues. On Devildriver's sixth release, Winter Kills, the band certainly didn't skimp on the riffage, the idling-dragster tempos or the sheer sonic drive that makes them one of heavy music's respected outfits. Winter Kills is all about the creation of flashover moments to empower people with hope and affirmation-or at the very least, the inspiration for people to create great work and engineer their own meaningful universes. This ain't no tired Tony Robbins posi-posturing or Joel Osteen's cartoony, cash-and-Christ posing. The world got more oppressive, and Devildriver are stepping up their game to keep hope alive in the most bone-powdering, cochlea-bleeding, neck-snapping way possible.

This is exactly how lyric videos need to be done. One very important word "legibility". Also I'm not sure why but the fact that they bothered to spell out the shout at the beginning just makes me laugh.

Dez has such a cool fucking voice, and their lyrics just have an aura of badassery to them. They just sound...cool. I think that's all this band is, is just fucking cool. Great music, great to jump around and mosh to.
If you don't have anything good to say about DevilDriver then just move on, don't bother commenting. They always have and always will put out amazing music.

tell them off! i started with songs from winter kills and listened to the full album of, The Fury of Our Makers Hand and i must say both albums (from what ive heard of winter kills) are damn awesome. i say dont be afraid to start listining to newer stuff first. it could be the thing that clicks you onto a genre, not just a band.

Once I really sat down and listened to pray for villians, it really became one of my favorite albums.Its not super metal, but there are heavy tracks, pray for villians and Ive been sober are some of their best tracks IMO, but I love everything theyve made, including this really pumped for the new album, seems more heavy than beast but still very much devildriver

I agree. Dez is a fantastic vocalist, great tones and high highs/low lows. He should have somebody writing his lyrics for him, they're not much better than they were in Coal Chamber. I sometimes feel like a tool singing DevilDriver lyrics but the music is so good and catchy you can't dismiss it.

I wouldn't call myself a proper metal fan, I'm very picky about what I listen to. It's got to be rythmic and almost catchy. I know that's a bad word in metal but thats just what I like. DevilDriver apparently falls under the Melodic Death Metal Genre. I'd call the first three albums Rock and Roll Metal and that's what I love about them. Songs like Swinging The Dead, Knee Deep, I couldn't care less, (ahem) Clouds over California and many more kick ass, bouncy, METAL!! tunes............
I think he means there are a lot of stop-start bits. Some of their songs are just full-speed all the way through. That's not a bad thing though.

I agree totally, i liked Beast but didnt really love it like their previous records. It felt like they were trying to be TO technical with everything, but again thats the natural progression of a band, experiment with different styles

The DD you're thinking of is gone. If they didnt evolve they'd just be recycling the same riffs from Last Kind Words, and you'd be complaining that that sounded the same. I personally love it, especially with the distortion on Dez's voice.

In that case, if you want a band that takes orders like a cook, I think Five Finger Death Punch and Disturbed is more your taste.

Killswitch had a similar problem with Disarm The Descent, considering that the tone for the entire album was too similar for each song. Still hasn't stopped it having 6 of the best songs they've ever released, however.
the beggining end and chorus are brutal on the speed but the verses feel pretty slow compared to all that speed on the rest of the track

i wasnt really into villians at first, but i did end up liking it better than beast. both were good imo but villians really grew on me fast, its practically pure melody but they turned on the heavy at just the right time in the tracks, i dunno, just what i think but i understand how at first you probably listened to it and was like" what the fuck, from makers hand, to this?"
