When my brother and I were kids, we ate a whole bottle of Flintstone vitamins. My mom freaked out and called the poison control center. We were then made to take Ipecac and stay in the back yard. We puked our guts out! We learned later in life that poison control told my mom the worst the vitamins would do to us is make us constipated. My mom just wanted to scare us.

Civil War "doctor": Let's just use the same tools from one patient to the next to save time. And we can skip washing our hands and sterilizing our equipment.
Me: (with NO medical or bacteriological training whatsoever) Are you *kidding* me?

Granted, they didn’t know that they had to do that. Plus, water was filthy a lot of times and if you washed your hands with some dirty water you might be screwing your patient more than you already are. Thank god for filtered water lol

You guys should stop at the Genese Country Village and Museum next summer for their Civil War reenactment. They had a small field hospital at the Union camp with some doctors talking about the procedures they’d do and an undertaker that talked about caring for the dead. It was some really interesting stuff!

The Venisection knife was for bloodletting.
"Bloodletting (or blood-letting) is the withdrawal of blood from a patient to prevent or cure illness and disease. Bloodletting, whether by a physician or by leeches, was based on an ancient system of medicine in which blood and other bodily fluids were regarded as "humours" that had to remain in proper balance to maintain health."
This was a big practice during the Black Death Plaque era.

If the surgery didn't kill you, often times the convelesance would. Infirmary often times was a tent out in the field in the mud, with a lack of clean linens, bed pans or even clean bandages. Even those lucky enough to be taken to either a makeshift or actual hospital faced much of the same issues as nurses were not at all experienced in sterilization of bandages or linens, thus many of the poor souls died from the subsequent infections even more so than the initial injuries.

I had partial dentures made by Western Dental in 2014, and they looked JUST LIKE the ones made during the Civil War. I never could wear them: just two flat slabs of plastic ground down to fit, going *clack clack clack* like something out of a zombie movie. Stay far, far away from Western Dental! "Civil War dentistry for the New Millenium."
Anyway, my dad was a corpsman during the Vietnam war, and a coroner later on; he would have loved this museum.

History lesson. The shortest soldier in the Civil War was 6 years old he was a drumer for the union army. And later served as a rifleman once he became of age. This is during the time children's rights laws did not exist so basically they were all thought of as small adults. The "children Classification" came after the industrial revolution ended. Young kids did indeed serve In the war as soldiers
