I have 3 of the 4.0 Heli. The controller's for it are programmed in a way which burns the turbine Stator. On full battery it stalls the turbine from full rpm to zero in three seconds, then continuously cut's in and out until the battery is drained to the point which trigger's the brake release. Something to watch out for. Thought I'd share my experience on the topic
I appreciate the advice! in general I don't use an off the shelf charge controller so it's not a great concern there. I've asked iSta Breeze to send me one of their charge controllers just to play with and demo but it's been back burnered for larger projects a few times.
Inverter and dump load setup would be great. I have found inverter programming of wind curve is very important. These big turbines can run wind on you in big winds if not properly setup.
Darn I wanted to suffer the consequences of my actions of being totally unprepared to put up such a large turbine! No worries my place of work has said that I can address it to them if any thing personal is shipped via freight. I will definitely be doing some freight research before getting one or two. Hopefully this 4kw unit is serviceable in the field for a long time.
I'd actually LOVE to do this, but I was only barely able to get my i1500 back together when I popped it apart...I'm afraid I'd never be able to get the Heli 4.0 back together at all :/
I'm sure you will have already though of this but just in case. I run solar hydro and wind, my solar and hydro are grid tied with Growatt inverters my wind charges batteries but can be switched over using a transfer switch to one of the blue Chinese grid ties like the one you have but smaller (1000w) The Growatt inverters on the sun and hydro take around 30-60 sec to connect so don't think they would be any good for a wind turbine because of the wind fluctuation. I'm sure there will be wind turbine inverter out there that connect much faster or maybe have a low startup voltage. If I remember right my Growatt's have a startup at around 80vdc. I'm interested to see what the slow RPM voltage will be on that turbine when you get around to doing some tests. Have fun
Lag has always been a deep concern of mine...it's always been a problem, really, and it's the reason I'm having to use batteries to regulate my voltage. Without batteries my turbines bounce off the dump load without ever giving the inverters a chance to grab the voltage. My hope here is to run this thing off a sunny boy string inverter but I am genuinely concerned about it being fast enough to grab the turbine before it runs away. It's going to take some experimentation.
@@ToysforWatts Well I think experimentation is your middle name so sure you will find a way. If the sunny boy has more than one input you could try some solar to keep the voltage up but come dark that idea is riddled with holes. Have fun
It's something I'd really like to do but I don't think I'd be able to get the Heli turbines back together. It was everything I could do to get the i1500 reassembled when I took it apart. Doing the Heli turbines would require some pretty specialized equipment I don't have access to.
I have the exact same Heli 4.0 (on-grid high voltage) turbine waiting to be installed. I'm not so sure about the quality of the wiring coming out the back of the generator, plus I presume there's a slip ring somewhere in te depths of the post. I'm not confident enough to open it up to check the quality of the slip ring.
I have no problem admitting that I would have preferred to see some heavier wiring coming out of it, but I told myself the same thing with the i1500, i2000, and Heli 2.0....all three of which have performed pretty well. I think it's less important with mine because I'm working with the high voltage version so wire size is less of a concern...I can't help but think that surely their 48v Heli 4.0 has heavier wire. I am a small bit concerned about the slip ring, too....again, high voltage, so it's not going to see the same kind of amps my other turbines see at 48v, but that it is buried in there somewhere bugs me. I'm not particularly worried about it working, but not being able to see it drives me nuts.
Should I spend the money on a 40 foot wind tower that costs $3500 , aluminum with another 1200 mounting cost or is there a pipe I can get from a steel pipe company cheaper? I have the instructions they gave me to build a tapered version but no one can build that here and it is expensive. With the large size I am concerned about the size. I was thinking of a 10ga 4 inch pipe 35 feet long?
For this turbine a 4" mast is going to be pretty light. I would recommend 6" structural pipe (will be at least .25" wall thickness) and two sets of guy wires...but even that's going to be pretty pricey. Personally I'm using a free-standing tri-pole tower similar to what my i2000 is mounted to, but with a much wide footprint. It will be roughly 35ft at the hub. All in including the concrete I'll be under $1000...but I have the ability to do all my own welding...or most of it, anyway, some of the heavier flanges and such i've hired out just to be certain they're solid.
It uses a slip ring between the upper carriage and the mounting flange. The way it's assembled I can't access it to get a picture, but it's in there. It's got 10g or 5mm^2 wiring going out.
I'm wanting to have something larger...I have a large collection of various motorcycle rotors 300 and 330 mm. I want as much brake surface area as I can fit behind the hub. I do like the idea of a mechanically actuated caliper, though.
@@ToysforWatts it's a 4kw turbine, a pit bike has a 4kw engine and it's brakes effect velocity quicker than it's engine does. Volvo 440/480 had a cable and hyd rear caliper, nice compact little unit. Can't think of any others.
Hi, I'm wondering how many poles the heli 2.0 has inside as I'd like to create a speed sensing system using an opto-coupler. Have you ever taken the front or back covers off the rotors?

Small correction. There can be a HUGE tariff on solar in the USA and Canada (Thanks to Trump!). Or at least there was 12 months ago, IF you don't get small panels with specific cell size. We fit the 72 cell 190W exemption due to power and cell size so escaped the typical tariff. Our turbine was tariff free and had small taxes! Shipping it in from China took MONTHS and nasty brokerage fees,
I honestly can't speak for 12 months ago, but photovoltaic cells have been subject to a heavily reduced fee schedule since 1998, and currently are exempt. Turbines as well. Supporting equipment, however, is subject to a 5% preferential tax, but my sources tell me you're not likely to get charged for those either. @@ToysforWatts I have a 1500 24v wind safe in the post now for 20 days , it started off in Bulgaria and is now in my country England I have had to pay £110 uk import taxes , It’s interesting your country is not taxing you for this kind of equipment. Maybe there’s a way to get around uk taxes I don’t know 78.47kg on the end of a 12m (40ft) tower is a going to be a good test for your rigging. I use stainless steel, Alan bolts and nylon locknuts. as I am next to the sea and everything rots with the salt air if anything comes loose, the locknut should hold tight. Where’s the spring lock washers just come loose and let the nut spin off . I have been thinking about a brake using a 12v Electric handbrake caliper from a car, I know a B6 Vw Passat has small ones on the rear Have a great day This has come a long way from the little Chinese wind turbine years back

There are tape measure’s out there both in inches and cm combined… we Europeans don’t know sh… about those toes elbows feet’s yards miles galons gauge awg and bits .. we like to keep it logical.. looking forward to seeing the power that thing is going to produce..oh and in Holland 2 mtrs wing span and 2000watts 15 mtr high are legaal allowed (45 feet , did the math thing for you)
Only with a permit though. and its depend on the location. My neighbour started complaining about our i1500. noise was the issue, and we live next to railroad tracks.. ffing idiot I say.

Sinds yesterday everything is working fine. New connectors, I removed the inverter. Over night my batteries are full. Very gutsy to get a 4 kw Ista.

be nice to see a stator comparison i1500/heli2.0/4.0 - but might take you some time to get the various bits of footage at the next take down of each.

pit bike disc with a slightly butchered mountain bike cable caliper would be a tidy way of doing it.

It's a 10ft diameter rotor, bringing it to a stop in high wind is going to be a challenge. It's going to take a lot of braking force.
