I've seen like dozens of reactions to this song and this one might be my favorite one. You're so expressive and really going deep to the feeling of the music that I can also feel the immense joy and pleasure in you. As an extremely empathetic person, I really appreciate that.

The drummer is out of this world! Guitars are amazing. And the vocalist is insane: his guttural voice, it's the "drive technique", like the drive used in guitars for distortion. Wintersun's vocalist is someone with solid vocal study - he goes easy from drive to natural voice and back. He has great range and beautiful tone too. Most singers blow up their voice doing it wrong, forcing throat and vocal chords to tense to the growling, neck veins seem they'll explode.

I've got to agree with you, man, I'm 50 and have heard a lot of metal in my time (well, a lot of music, full stop! I love pop and classical as well!), everything from Deep Purple to Napalm Death, Celtic Frost, Agalloch, Alcest, Myrkur, Eldemar, and Wintersun are, hands down, the best thing I've ever heard, just fantastic in every area. Jari's an absolute genius!

If you recall, melodic death metal originated in Sweden in the early nineties with bands like In Flames, At the Gates, Gates of Ishtar and many more. I guess they stole our water and kept it for themselves, 'cause nowadays Finland is the one to rule them all. Fair play to Suomi. They deserve it.

If I answer this seriously, I think it must be because there are so many people who love metal. So there's always a quest for more music and new bands. You have to have audience, nobody wants to play in their cellar forever. And here in Finland you have a big audience.
Also the kids are encouraged to play music, any kind they want. Be it pop or classic or rock, we offer them a lot of free music tuition, starting from elementary. They are welcomed to express themselves in various ways, nobody disses metal.

Honestly i feel like listening to classical/symphonic music helps more with understanding the nuances of Wintersun and other such bands because i feel like bands of this nature write more like classical than metal. Plus, all dem layers. Everywhere. Doing All The Things.

    • @timomastosalo
      @timomastosalo 5 лет назад +2

I was actually thinking how would a classical orchestra play this. I'd like there to be many drummers. And many cellos and contrabasses. Trumpets could do the choir parts. Strings as in the violins for the guitars of course.

I come back to this video sometimes, and love it every time I do. Hedgy, you get so much of this stuff, and your critiques are always so on point. The number of just... clever little things that go on in the back of this, and the compositional skill that this and many other Wintersun tracks had to take is off the charts. Thanks for the fantastic metal content.

Jari is just an genius man, how I love this man and his work ! Everything is just perfect, since his voice, the instrumental to his lyrics. This is my favorite song of all time. Wintersun and Time I are some of the best albums I've ever heard, so I was very exited to Forest Seasons. But in the first listen I thought it was an good album but noting exceptional, (except Loneliness, this song is an beautiful masterpiece) but after a few listens the album grow on my, I finally "understand the album", and became my favorite album of the last year along with Aathma by Persefone

I'm a Finn and an old metal fan. For some reason I don't understand myself, I found Wintersun at the end of 2017. I'm blown away, they are... Well, on the league of their own... React to their other studio lives, they are awesome! Also, if you haven't seen (or heard) 12 Foot Ninja, check them out! Awesome, AWESOME band! Totally underrated!

from where he sings, "I draw away everything to me that matters the most" to the next part where he sings "I fall into the darkness" that little section is my favorite part of the song. So many intricate things happening at once, but yet sounding awesome at the same time as well. I really like the mini guitar solo right before you pause the video as well.

Greetings Hedgy! I'm just getting over my extended holiday hangover and finally catching up with your uploads. I'm so glad you did Wintersun as I've been meaning to check them out for a while. I wasn't aware the drummer plays for Nightwish now, but since I love Nightwish this little fact made me even more interested in hearing this song. Initial thoughts: Brilliant! I love it. What a great song and great band! I definitely consider myself an advanced listener and I thought this was magnificent. I'm also glad you added the disclaimer to listen beyond the first minute. I (used to until recently) follow another reactor who does album marathons and immediately skips any song that starts out sounding remotely ballad-y. He lost my sub with his recent Metallica marathon, as anyone with half a brain knows all of their 'ballads' change drastically halfway through the song. No matter how many of his viewers tried to explain this to him, he refused to listen and kept doing it. I just couldn't take him seriously after that. So kudos to you for letting your listeners know to wait it out. What a marvelous song! I'll definitely be checking out more of their stuff.

I like how you broke the band, and their genre down properly. There is indeed, so much more going on in there song than us mere mortals could ever comprehend. I watched this video two years ago, and I was hooked right away. I never thought I would take a fancy to, "Melodic Death," but they gave me a safe entry into a fantastic journey. They have lead me to so many other bands that I never knew existed. Keep up the great work.

Cool that you're also enjoy Wintersun! Jari is such a good songwriter and musician, not to mention the others in the band (they've got to be masters of their instruments to play that sort of music).
Since you mentioned in a video (the channel information I think it was) that you don't know much about hiphop it might be interesting to see you react to some? :) Mainstream (what's generally played on radio) hiphop never sticks with me, but the Army of Pharaohs/Jedi Mind Tricks guys are really amazing. I'd start off with Vinne Paz - End of Days, he's one of the main lyricists of those two groups.

German and Nordic Heavy Metal bands are my favorite! They are highly creative, technical, aggressive. Songs and lyrics are outside the box of "industry". Rammstein, Tanzwut, Dream Theather, Children Of Bodom, Marco Hietala (and Northern kings Project), Heimataerd and the list goes on.

Thanks for this as they are one of my favorite bands. Since it's fairly relevant here, I recommend you to check out "the American Wintersun" Æther Realm (don't know where this nickname originates from but considering I think the band members are quite the memey bunch they might've just spread it themselves haha). Anyways to see where this comparison comes from, song "The Sun, The Moon, The Star" is definitely the best one to go with.
As another request of sorts I'm gonna second user My Ninja Info Cards somewhere around here and his recommendation Haken. Really cool prog metal band from UK. Falling Back to Earth is great song choice as well, other cool ones I could recommend would be Cockroach King (definitely the full version not the single version), Celestial Elixir (has decent live video if I recall correctly) and Pareidolia (has official video).
    Keep up the good work!

Such and amazing band and great reaction! I would like if you check out other older Wintersun tracks if you haven't recently. Anything from the first album or the other two songs from Time I from the same rehearsal studio. And there is one still unreleased song that will be on Time II that they performed live few times - The Way of the Fire. It's absolutely epic even though the sound quality is not perfect.

I'm sure I've seen the name before, but just too much metal out there to listen to...I'll use that as my excuse :D Pretty much soared to my top10 of metal bands (If I do listen to something other than synthwave, I go for stuff like Soilwork, Disarmonia Mundi, Scar Symmetry, All That Remains etc.) and probably #1 on the most underrated list for sure. Great video!

I agree with all you said. Except that I find this is more satisfying to listen to compared to any song off TFS, which is lacking the level of technicality and epic scale that this song balances so well. This is Jari's masterpiece though, so it won't be topped any time soon, even by himself but that's ok =)

Melodic death metal, it's great and all, but that be'lakor album made me realise something: slaughter of the soul is melodic death metal and it is a feral savage work of violent beauty. I've not really heard that since. Death metal seems to have lost that wildness. I need something feral

    Great review! :D
With music like this, it's almost more fun to see the reaction upon hearing it for the second, third, etc time, as it takes a lot to digest.
But honestly, this music is no more advanced than classical music. I think aside from the "extreme" connotation, it's actually nowhere near as complex as many famous classical works. I think the unfortunate reality is that with streaming and the like, listener attention span, and willingness to *put in effort*, as you mention is required for this piece (which comes down to simply sitting down and paying attention to it), has dwindled. As a result, I would argue that the majority of people, at least around where I live, don't actually sit and listen to music anymore, and I think overall musical IQ and openness has gone down as a result.

Certainly something that can only come from a Nordic foundation. Call me an old fart but I'm just not a fan of the growling vocals. By using those vocals you are limiting your appeal to the harcore metal community and bands such as this really could extend beyond that community because the music itself really is brilliant. However. I would take something like the supergroup Sons of Apollo over Wintersun just because of the vocals. ruclips.net/video/J_1N8kVYfkE/видео.html
