    Hi Lisa, please reconsider the “failed” sweater. Cut the collar off and reknit it smaller. This will raise obviously raise neckline but also likely make the arm holes more comfortable. The colors of this sweater are gorgeous for you and would be lovely styled as out wear (dog walking) with a tee and jean shirt underneath. Lovely to see you here and I will introduce myself on Ravelry as a soulful spinner. Now I should show you a few real “failed” sweaters that I need to rip out.

    • @SoulfulSpinning
      @SoulfulSpinning  7 месяцев назад +3

      Martha, I am taking your advice. Since it’s bottom up the collar is super easy to unbind. With wool leggings on a cold day it might work. Thanks a million! 🥰

      I agree with reknitting the yoke of that sweater. My philosophy on ripping out and reknitting changed when I retired: I can take the time now and enjoy the yarn and knitting again! No longer in a hurry for the project to get done.
      Your “spindle microphone” is so funny! But definitely effective, too.
      The flowers on the table beside you are so pretty!
      Your color and yarn choices make me swoon…Miss Babbs - ooooh! And that Cascade Ultra Pima…mmmm.
      Your earrings are pretty, too. They will go with that Cascade top when you make it.
      Happy birthday to Peaches!

    About the “fail sweater”: just crop it!!! It will look much better with a tighter collar, you can unravel it and pick up less sts. I would shorten the sleeves, add a tight cuff, and crop the body to your waist length. That means to unravel about half of your body length (or cut it and make a skirt or a capelet with the cut off part). You can look some colorwork boxy sweaters on ravelry. They look so flattering over dresses, or slim pants, on all body types. ❤❤

    So good to see you, Lisa. I'm currently spinning some fine Shetland that I think came from offspring of Jen Johnson's flock. And a couple weeks ago ago, I bought my first fleece! Gray CVM lamb from Lochanmor Farm, about a half hour away. I look forward to assembling my scouring/dyeing setup in the horse barn, which has water and a floor drain and I can make a mess. All of this inspired by you! Happy birthday, dear Peaches.

    Oh so nice to see you again! I took the opportunity to spin while watching. It had been a while, but I picked back up on some Greenwood Fiberworks BFL/Nylon 80/20 that I had picked up at Oregon Flock and Fiber last fall.
    I'm spinning on a 'new to me' Schacht Matchless that I picked up from a friend who was clearing out her late mom's craft room. It's was 'born' on June 26, 1989, so quite a vintage wheel! But she still spins like a dream (after I gave her some cleaning and care).
    Just a lovely bit of time on a Sunday evening to sit and visit with you and spin on my wheel. Thank you for taking the time to put out a podcast for us - it always feels like visiting with a knitting/spinning friend. 🙂 I will go check out the group on Ravelry. Sounds like a good spot for spinners.

    I am spinning for my first sweater...I'm following Andrea Mowry's spin it to knit it traveler. I'm spinning Hello yarn corriedale. I have 4 skeins so far and I'm going to spin all the fiber I bought. It is still inconsistent spinning (I've only been spinning for 6 months) but I'm going to make this sweater. I learn so much each time I knit with what I spin. Best way to learn. I'm also knitting up a beret in handspun BFL/Teeswater lamb fiber. So beautiful!!! Learning here too, prob overspun and overplied😢 but I'm making the beret tight gauge, so we'll see.

    We all have a sweater or two that is NOT our finest hour, but we don't have a podcast and viewers as witnesses! I'd hang the sweater on the wall as art, since it's quite gorgeous, and then frog the heck out of it when you want to reclaim the yarn. But Martha's suggestion is more practical...can't wait to see the makeover. I finished a summer top, started last summer and then tucked aside. Flower Street Tee by Sweater Freak, made with Purl Soho Linen Quill. I figure I can layer it over a thin long sleeve tee in the shoulder season, too. Love all the peonies!

I have a small podcast and I agree, I just can't when anyone else is around, especially my husband, which is ridiculous because he's my biggest supporter but I always feel weird. I head to my shop in the early morning, before I open to record while he's out on a morning bike ride and that works. I have had a few failed sweaters but the best thing about yarn is it doesn't expire. I would love to see you re-knit the same jumper because it really suits you. Really appreciate your book reviews too. You may enjoy In Defence of Witches and Unwell Women. Your ‘failed’ lopapeysa, as I mentioned before, is the same one I knitted a few years ago and mine is enormous!!! I wear it almost as a dress, with leggings, in the winter. I didn’t like how the neck sat so I folded and stitched it. I assumed it was me…not very experienced and unwell at the time, but when I saw yours I now think it’s the pattern!! I am a loose knitter too. It’s heartbreaking, as you put so much time and hope into it - and it is gorgeous…
    I am so pleased to see the lovely Peaches so well too!
    Thank you for your book talk - I have preordered the paperback version of the Renaissance women one - it sounds great.
    I did join revelry years ago but never use it, but you’re making me want to explore Soulful Spinners…it’s a great idea. I know what you mean about Insta! Thank you for all you share with us. 🥰

      @SoulfulSpinning  7 месяцев назад +1

      I remembered what you said, Beverly about yours and I should have taken it as a cautionary tale. 😂
      I think I will try to take out the neck and decrease some more stitches, to tighten it up a bit and make it taller. That’s should help raise the garment a bit. It’s worth a try before i 🐸 it. The stitches have bloomed with the yarn and it would be a pain to unravel.
      I have a cute pair of wool legging I could wear it in for dog walks as someone else suggested.
      Glad I am not the only one. 😆
      I hope you join us over in Ravelry. It seems almost “old school” in the forums but it’s a respite from all the pop up ads you get everywhere else.

    You're in good company with a yoke a wee bit too big. Back in Jan/Feb, the Yarn Harlot cast on a Field Sweater and was madly in love with it. Somehow or another, the yoke turned out to be 87" around (not Stephanie's size). She ignored every knitterly warning she had ever shared with other knitters and just kept knitting. Her final comment was something like "better knitters don't make fewer mistakes, they just make bigger mistakes faster". I am laughing again just imagining this. The tale of woe is in her Instagram feed.

    Love your Mabel cardigan, it’s turning out lovely. The Lopi sweater is beautiful- I’m know the fit has to be disappointing. I think you’re instinct to wait and decide is probably right but if truly it won’t be worn you probably will want to reclaim the lovely yarn. Felting would be risky- though you could felt and cut chair pads or make some other felted item as a memento that might feel less defeating. I have found I have to knit the upper portion of sweaters with my upper bust measurement to get a good fit. Then I size up. I’m now finding I really only need to adjust for the front - if I ever get my next episode posted that’s a topic I want to explore with everyone. Beautiful spinning as always!! My first Lopapeysa turned out to be a tent in width and dress in length. I put it into the washing mashine and felted it moderately. Now it fits, but it's super warm and a bit stiff, that's why it's a bit uncomfortable around the neck. Now summer is around the corner, so I will wait until autumn and probably cut a slit in the front.

      I've put my knitting to rest during the summer and want to focus on handsewing, spinning and needlebinding. My big project at the moment is a woolen dress for my living history hobby and when I want to do something small and easy I spin Norwegian spælsau fiber for sewing thread. My needlebound wrist warmers could use some attention as well, but that has to wait until the dress is done.

    I was thrilled to hear you are thinking of trying “old school” sweater construction. While I appreciate the ingenious new one-piece knitting patterns, I have found that I quite dislike schlepping a big wad of knitting in my lap. I’m back to piecing, mostly. A back, two fronts, two sleeves-cardigan pieces almost fly off the needles. Sewing takes some time, but I’ve learned to enjoy the process. I particularly like the way pieced sweaters hang. Good luck, Lisa! I’ll be watching to see how you get on.

    Hi Lisa, I like knitting summer tops in cotton or cotton and linen. My favourite is Scotch broom by wool and pine, it’s fun to knit and flattering to wear, I’ve made 3 of them. Another I enjoyed knitting and wearing is Oksa by Kaitlin Hunter and I made it short sleeves in off white. I loves cool reds too.

    Hi Lisa: Wonderful podcast! My first successful colorwork sweater was Golden Fern by Jenn Steingass. I didn’t understand positive ease or anything about superwash. And non-super wash fibers. It came out too big and the wool must have been super wash which added stretch to the garment. No, I didn’t frog it because it was a lot of work and it is beautiful. I wear it every so often.
    Favorite summer knits is the Anker summer shirt, Misurina, and the Salty Air Tee.

    Oooh excited for more spinning videos! I'm doing a sweater spin using undyed a white alpaca and white mohair blend from our small herd (however we've now moved and sold our angora goats). Spinning white has been slow and I haven't decided on what to dye this before knitting. I've overdyed a sweater before and it turned out so patchy that I ended up giving it to goodwill. I can recommend a summer top pattern by Lily Kate France - Abydos top.

I’m a beginner spinner and spin on my Ashford e-spinner. I love it 🥰 However I would love to spin on a traditional wheel but where I live I have no possibility to try out different models and types of wheels. Do you have any suggestions on what to consider when buying a wheel? I love to spin long draw. Feel free to comment but I totally understand the complexity of my question and that it could be super hard to give any pointers since I guess it’s really an individually based approach. Again, a million thanks for a great podcast episode. See you on Ravelry! Anette

    Dear Lisa, so nice to see you again, and thank you so much for the mention ! As I am influenced too, the Dotted Rays idea came from Rosemary who knit it with yarn I had sent her. Then I made one with yarn she had sent me 😺
    For the oversized sweater, if you are unsure, leave it in the naughty spot and let the ideal decision come to you. It took me two years to transform 2 sweaters that I was not wearing in vests (with set in sleeves which made it possible) and completely rip out a Half & Half shawl. I still need to decide what to make with the reclaimed beautiful De Rerum Natura Ulysse yarn, I have my eyes on a ANKESTRiCK cardigan. We'll see !

    Your Lopi sweater is just beautiful but HUGE!!! The colors look like some of the best I've seen you wear. I know you probably don't want to hear this but I would take it apart and knit it again. I have done the exact same thing. Of course, I always try to shrink them but that's not the best idea. I have 2 ideas for gauge swatching. If it says gauge is 21 stitches over 4 inches, I cast on 21 sitches. I don't do any edging, just start in pattern and knit the 21 stitches for 4 inches (row). That seems to be the easiest way for me to accurately measure and know whether I have gotten gauge. I just have to measure 4 inches and know that if it is 4, I got gauge with 21 stitches. The other way which I learned in a gauge class and no one else has ever talked about is to knit your gauge as big as you want with the needles recommended (or the ones you want to use) and then slide the stitches off the needle and count the loops. I hesitated in trusting this even though the teacher was an amazing knitter but when I followed the loops down, they lined up perfectly with the stitches below. Hope this helps!! Missed you, you haven't been around for a while

    Hi Lisa, so glad to see you pop up again, I've missed you. I always love the things you show, and your thoughts about them. I was thinking along the lines of another person who commented earlier, and wondered if you could not still save your lopi sweater. The colours suit you so well. Have you heard of barber cord? It is a rubber hollow cord you can slide over the tips of your needle, then you can pull all or half of your stitches onto the cord, to make it super easy to try on your sweater as you go along. I do this a few times for every sweater I knit, so I can make adaptations before it is too late. Once you have tried the sweater on, you can easily slide the stitches back onto your needle to continue knitting.
    Love all the projects you are working on. I just finished a lovely summer T-shirt designed by Meiju KP, the Hilpu Tee. The fit is amazing. Your idea of doing spindle tutorials sounds good. If there are a variety of staple lengths in the prep you could try taking a bit of the roving and rolling it up into a cylinder (like a rolag) or folding over your finger to spin. When fibers are very short a longdraw method seems to work best for me. Best of luck and if you want to share your progress pop over to the ravelry group. Collective wisdom is always appreciated!

    I like that pattern on that sweater. My cousin is giving me 2 fleece from this shearing. My question is, if I add Alpaca 🤔 do I want to spin a 2 or 3 ply yarn.? I will give it to my niece to knit. How many skien of yarn she needs? So you must like to spin in the garden under a shade tree. You should try it and listen to music 🎶.

    • @SoulfulSpinning
      @SoulfulSpinning  7 месяцев назад

      That’s a big question. There are a few variable you have to consider. The best thing is to spin a small skein and count the yardage per pound (called grist)
      Tiny Fibre Studio just did an excellent video on grist and even created an online calculator to figure it out.
      Sampling is the best thing to do. It’s really the only way you’ll know if you’ll get the fabric you want.
      Alpaca will add weight and drape to the fabric. Oh yes, I often listen to music as I spin!
