BlackSaltAudio is going to release a new gate plugin soon! I'm curious how good it will be. Maybe we all will need only one plugin to gate snare etc. soon, haha
Dude every video you make is something new that we don't see in any other channel... your channel is a gift for all of us here on youtube. Thanks for your content!
Oxford drum gate is a killer alternative; has both an incredible gate and a drum leveler built in. You can even fine tune the decay frequencies so the fundamental decays slower than the top end.
Fabfilter Saturn has an amazing gate functionality for that, I'm not even sure it was intended this way, but it makes the cymbals almost fully disappear.
Oxford Drum Gate combines these two plugins into one. It doesn't work exactly the same way as De-Bleeder, but for fellow Mac users running current Mac OS I believe it's the best alternative. Very sad that Wilkinson is no longer supporting current Mac builds.
Don't over complicate things. Just double your track, inverse the phase on the 2nd track and add a Compressor on it. Fastest Attack, High Ratio. You will have much less spill and even amazing control over the release without sounding like plastic.
This is really useful. But I make it another way. 1. RX10 - debleed (for reference SNARE for source Overhead) - very impressive results 2. Saturn2 - dynamics knob for middle and high. 3. Drum leveler Result - almost clean sound of the snare and you can add what ever you want.
I saw one other person mention that Sonnox Oxford Drum Gate combines debleeding & leveling. That is true & Oxford Drum Gate is part of my processing chain. It cleans the close mic tracks up a lot but to finish off, I use Boz Digital Labs' Transgressor 2. The genius of that plugin is that it lets you EQ the transient & sustain portions separately. So, you can (for example) boost the crack of the transient while low passing the sustain, thus EQing out the remaining cymbal bleed from the drum's sustain. And you can do that while boosting the drum's fundamental tone in the sustain. It's an incredible tool. By the way, someone will probably mention that Eventide Split EQ allows you to EQ the attack & sustain separately too. That is true, but Transgressor does it a better way. With Split EQ, you can only EQ the 2 parts at the same frequency points. The attack & sustain EQs in Transgressor are completely independent of each other. Split EQs implementation is just a weird way to go about things to me.
work harder at the source...drop a room mic 6ft in front of the kit and listen to your playing on the mic... if you don't hear the balance between the drums and cymbals the way you need it.. change your playing dynamics. Once that sounds good, use all your mics and play that same way... that alone is better than plugins for most things.
The drums on this recording sound so good to me -- I mean, sure, I like aggressive drums dripping with samples for a modern metal production, but, my personal favorite tones are ones like these. Beautiful. I have drum leveler and I'm still kinda learning how to use it correctly -- will check out De-bleeder. Thanks Kohle!
If you have the channels and mics, I recommend using two mics at different sides of the snare drum. The other cancels hihat bleed and the other crash and ride bleed. (point the butts of the mics toward them) Then automate mutes accordingly. This way these tools have to do less work, and that's always better.
Debleeder is a great plugin. Used it for years but now you can't use it on a Mac anymore. Btw great video like always. I will check Drum Leveler, seem great too!
I use the AIXDSP Multiband gate for drums. There's something about the layout of the plugin that seems a little off to me; I feel like I'd prefer something as simple as De Bleeder and Drum Leveler like you are using. It probably seems lazy but the less time fussing with the plugin the better!
Black Salt Audio has a new plugin coming out. Looks to be some kind of drum gate. The audio examples were pretty compelling. Pretty much removed all the cymbal bleed without affecting the tone.
Addictive trigger. Don't make your life more difficult. Your OHs will fill in a lot of the room/natural sound anyway. Samples will deliver the punch. Think about your drums in the wider context. Just because your snare might sound muffled / weak in isolation, doesn't mean the OHs won't provide some of that when brought back in.
@@KohleAudioKultI'm sure we would all love to hear your take on the Nolly snare drum gate technique using Saturn! Maybe you could add your own twist to it like you did in the fake stereo guitar DI video.
@@KohleAudioKultyeah he published it on the ggd channel. Works extremely well and combines really good with debleeder or the sonnox gate. Hopefully they never change the algorithm of that one function inside Saturn. 😂
Great channel, thx for sharing that stuff!! Here's just one more idea: Duplicate the raw original snare track and send both - original and duplicate - into a new snare bus. Hi. Long time watching your great videos, first time commenting on one. I don't have those plugins but... For the debleeder trick, in the past I used izotopes multiband expander, sidechained from a second snare track with an eq that was used like the fundamental knob. Maybe the drum leveler can be replaced by waves vocal rider and a normal gate vst. What is your opinion?
Welcome to the comments section! Sounds like you have found some great work-arounds that do the same thing. I don’t think that vocal rider has the right detection for the job though.
Can you or anyone break down the midi sample thing with the room mics? How does that work? You record a good snare and kick hit then save it as a .wav file then insert on the kick/snare with the Steven Slate plugin or pasting?
It basically works like that. I always use the samples from the session and mostly way more than one. Kome join Kohle Audio Kult to learn stuff like this 👍🏻
A trick i like to use to reduce bleed is with fabfilter Saturn. Ill make a single band split at around 1k and on the high side of the split, ill turn the dynamics knob all the way down. Then slide the band crossover point around to taste. Usually works like a charm. Not 100% but almost every time its all i really need to do.
@@KohleAudioKult I'm going to be perfectly honest with ya. I do not know how to use an expander so I've never even tried to use one. I understand its similar to a compressor but I don't actually know what's going on at all. If this technique is like an expander, I would have never guessed. I actually discovered this messing with a live vocal track that had some drum bleed on it. I was mostly just clicking around trying to figure out how to tame back the drums without using a gate. The way I understand that knob is that it takes content out of the signal when I turn it down and it adds content when I turn it up. Due to the nature of the plugin I assume its all harmonics or saturation its changing. It doesn't seem to be doing the whole transient designer thing. Its not making the rest of the signal more punchy but it is basically only leaving the transient behind and usually reduced. So to get the highs out without damaging the body of the vocals I added a crossover frequency. I ended up not liking the way it worked out. I mean it was usable but I took a different approach. But I did end up trying this on the snare of the same project and it worked REALLY well for me. Hey if you have time to fit it into your schedule. Id love to see a video from you on the topic of expanders. Thanks for what you do here!!!

Wish debleeder still worked for M1 Mac’s. I used it for years and they stopped updating it. Since upgrading my Mac (had no choice), debleeder no longer works!
My issue has to be I'm not hitting consistently hard enough because my snare tracks sound just like these, just can't get them in the mix loud enough w/o clipping. I've been watching & applying your tips for a few years & I'm concluding that my body's too battered to perform how I need & that's making it hard to get a good gain stage.
none of that seems likely. at least from a mix perspective. Just lower all the gains and turn up you speakers... then you won't peg your tracks faders. If your snare sounds "just like these" then you are likely hitting okay and apparently not clipping your interface. So, most of that still comes down to getting better mixing skills starting at lowering all your faders and dropping a trim on some tracks perhaps.
@@morbidmanmusic I tried side chaining the gate & it seems to be the solution. I have the volume I was looking for & doesn't seem to be altering the sound
@@KohleAudioKult Its both. The material is really dynamic (ghosts & blast beats in the same songs) & my health & age makes it really hard to have the control, stamina, & strength I used to have.
Are your hits too soft compared to the cymbals or is the snare drum performance too dynamic?
@@morbidmanmusic I tried side chaining the gate & it seems to be the solution. I have the volume I was looking for & doesn't seem to be altering the sound
@@KohleAudioKult Its both. The material is really dynamic (ghosts & blast beats in the same songs) & my health & age makes it really hard to have the control, stamina, & strength I used to have.
But I think I resolved my issue by throwing the gate on a side chain. I'm getting the volume I was looking for while maintaining the sound & everything else.
@andrewjacobs5579 Drum Leveler really helps to prepare a dynamic performance for a noise gate.
You might also wanna split the snare into two tracks with different noise gate settings like I describe it in the video.
I use *way* too many ghost notes for this type of de-bleed to work. :/
I just use two tracks for that. One with the ghost note parts and less processing
Instead of using 2 separate tracks for dynamic snare signals I'd prefer automatisation.
Sure. Just a matter of preference.
No gate?
I’m using the gate inside Drum leveler. That’s Step 2.
Can you use it for Tom’s too.?
@@Abzshred I imagine you could, same principle just a different fundamental transient with longer release. Just guessing 🤔
@@Abzshred yes
bruv, sonible smart gate and call it a day. under 3 seconds perfect gating.
What so cool about it?
