I'm just leaving another comment because this has saved many mixes and I've been also using it for other instruments that don't depend on high frequencies when trying to eliminate hiss.. thanks a ton again!!!
Yes! I remember commenting about this on the P4 video! this has been the key for me since I’ve been doing mostly livestream full-band mixes since 2020, so needing low-latency, and working mostly with drum enclosures which have 3x as much bleed as normal recordings lol I’d say a few quick tips, since it’s very accurate if you’ve got even just a decent/okay source. if you find yourself losing too much of the top-end transient or it’s not “opening” up for you, since it’s only a 1 knob solution, you can find more ideal results adding some processing to help Saturn 1) transient design before the plug-in to add some attack, a more definite transient helps it to open more accurately, and if your source is pretty weak, you’ll need it 2) add more high-end before the plug-in. The dynamics control is band-dependent, so if you don’t have enough of the frequency you’re expanding, you could lose some softer, duller hits. 3) drive the input a bit more, this works as a 2-in-1 since you’ll also saturate the top-end more, which adds more top-end as well that you might be losing!
honestly, whenever Eric's big barn studio is finished or he has time, you both should just sit together for 4 hours and just discuss mixing, recording, anything. the amount of knowledge the internet has gained on mixing from the both of you in the last few years is crazy.
i love you nolly for sharing this magical trick we producers were suffering for decades. all you have to do is to turn the dynamic knob and alll things are sorted. wow!!!.Such a secret trick i wouldn't expect to be revealed here.
This is great, Nolly. I was looking for this trick, cuz I saw the original interview with Hardcore Music Studio, and I was impressed when you mentioned this trick, but now to see and hear it in the real context, I think it is amazing
Saturn is literally good on everything. I love it on a mix bus, but I actually use it a TON on rhythm Guitars. It smooths out and excites in a way that other plugins just don’t do.
@@ghastlyshimmer I will use the solo feature to find the main presence frequencies (typically between 1k and 3k), turn solo off, and then saturate them. This can work really well on lead guitars as they make them more present without making them too loud or grating.
😱 oh man, just googled out how can i get rid of the cymbal bleed without hardgating i used to do all the time. now i immediately tested it in the mix and it works so damn well! i like how simple it is, there's no need to set any thresholds for each drum independently, it's just two tweak solution. love it, thanks a lot for this trick!
Always thought the name of Periphery's drummer was Matt Halpern - turns out it's "Mount Alban" according to the subtitles... haha that made me laugh :D Wow...! This is a pretty huge deal for live drum mixing - thanks for sharing, Nolly!
This is really helpful, thank you! Tweaking the frequency divider and the filter slope really helps to reach the sweet spot to get a nice sound without the cymbal and hi-hat bleeding :)
I saw your interview with Jordan, it was a bloody good watch. It definitely confirmed my mixing in solo thing, even tho they say don't do it, you explained exactly what I experienced (watch the video people)
You made me buy Saturn after watching a NTM and Jordan's video. I'm sure FF sales tripled after people started learning about this. I think u should be getting a discount code or a kickback, lol.
Eric Valentine was (unknowingly) one of my biggest mixing inspirations after i discovered he was responsible for making all the albums i loved as a kid sound “professional”
Where can I press the like button more than once?! Freaking great trick there, I'll apply that for sure later on :D. Thank you so much Nolly for sharing your discoveries!
That is kind of a game changer. Had huge problems with a hard hitted open off-beat hi-hat in my last production and it was terrible on the snare close mic...
It's a great tip, I just feel like for the kind of music I work on, the release on the "gate" is a bit too quick, but for this style it makes total sense, awesome.
Usually I use an phase inverted copy of a track with an added compressor because gates tend to sound too unnatural for me. I need to try this on my next mix. Thanks!
Some people say Saturn sucks for gating, because of the pre-ringing effect when linear phase is on. So basically it makes transients softer. I don''t know, I use Saturn for gating and it's awesome, I will use an envelope shaper on a snare drum anyways.
I love how ff products have enormous utility for their obvious uses, but as time goes by these awesome Easter eggs are revealed. Easily the best plug-in company imho. I simply am not interested in replacing any of their stuff.
Thanks Nolly, gonna buy Saturn now, the drums on the last Periphery sounded amazing EDIT: can someone explain me the proces for tom stripping and switching between raw and stripped tom tracks, can't find the info I need online... AND in Logic pro X please
It's funny because today I was listening to "Freedom - Rage Against The Machine" and you can clearly hear that the snare is gated, and when it opens you hear the cymbals/hi-hat, and I was thinking "there must be a modern and easy way today to deal with this". I guess thank you for reading my mind.
Yes! I recommend doing this post-compression though. If your signal isn't consistent enough, you'll lose some words and moments if you're on the heavier-handed side.
Yep, it works really nice with a strong hits. But what about ghost notes and blastbeats ? Ghost notes in this video almost disappeared when processed with Saturn, unfortunately.
You can also duplicate the track, edit out everything leaving the ghost notes, process them as you please, then blend them back in with the original source
that's great, but what about ghost notes on the snare? I'm not trying to be snarky, it's a problem I have all the time - my drummer is excellent, but he plays ghost notes constantly and I don't really have a great solution for getting rid of the bleed but also keeping the ghost notes. Anybody?
Fantastic tutorial Nolly! But one thing i must say (not a criticism by far) is that that mug is very distracting haha, couldn’t stop myself from staring at it… …where can I buy one?! 🖤
Nolly mate, take me under your wing! I will be bringing you fresh coffee, making sandwiches and most importantly I will be making sure that the knobs on your analog gear at set counter-clockwise. *Wink Wink* 😎😎
Hey, VSauce, Nolly here. We're going to talk about Eliminating Cymbal Bleed with FabFilter Saturn. But first, what is Cymbal? and what is Cymbal Bleed? how do you eliminate Cymbal Bleed?
Saturn is the best plugin purchase i’ve ever made tbh
It‘s insane what Saturn can do 🤯
Ditto. It’s amazing.
Once again, Nolly out here making everybody’s mixes way better… for the good of humanity. God bless this man!
Thank you for doing this for humanity Nolly. I have been looking for this since I heard it on your interview with Jordan.
Nolly once again pushing the genre and production forward. Beautiful trick!
Nolly is giving away gold here. Had a mix recently that this wouldve probably singlehandedly saved me hours on.
I'm just leaving another comment because this has saved many mixes and I've been also using it for other instruments that don't depend on high frequencies when trying to eliminate hiss.. thanks a ton again!!!
I purchased Saturn after watching Eric Valentine too. It definitely has taken my drums mixes to another level

This just saved a mix I'm working on when none of my usual tricks were working. Thanks so much!
Babe wake up new Nolly video just dropped

Wow! That's incredible! Saturn just got even better

Hi, how do you use it on rhythm guitars?

WOW...I am mind blown...thank you Nolly, so much!
Really cool tip; thanks for sharing!

Thanks Nolly. I was hoping you'd make this video.
I’m amazed and blown away, brilliant!

Holy hell this technique works on everything; I already liked saturn but I officially love it. So much more powerful than I ever realized. Wow.
I was super curious about this after watching the interview, and I'm so glad you made a video about it! Thanks Nolly!
I saw your interview with Jordan, it was a bloody good watch. It definitely confirmed my mixing in solo thing, even tho they say don't do it, you explained exactly what I experienced (watch the video people)
p.s Loved this video, you're helping a lot of people with this.
Nice to see you here! Love Heavy Metal Ninjas and I'm dying to hear more music from you guys!
This will change the game imo. Thanks for everything you do man!
My fucking mind has just been blown wtf!!! What a gem NOllY must BE protected
Thank you for the introduction to this plugin Nolly its fantastic
Thanks a lot for sharing this trick, Nolly - very generous of you!
You made me buy Saturn after watching a NTM and Jordan's video. I'm sure FF sales tripled after people started learning about this. I think u should be getting a discount code or a kickback, lol.
Thank you Nolly. You're awesome!
Eric Valentine was (unknowingly) one of my biggest mixing inspirations after i discovered he was responsible for making all the albums i loved as a kid sound “professional”
Oook, just tried it here in a mix that wasn't exactly recorded greatly, and WHA THE HELL!!! That simply works like a charm!
Wow. I've been using your fabfilter MB trick to reduce bleed for a long time, but this is awesome. I'm gonna have to give this a shot.
This is dope. Thanks for sharing Nolly!
Using this from now on! Thanks
lol dammit this was one of my secrets for years!! glad someone else does this and likes it. very affirming.
That dynamics knob is one of my fav things ever.
Where can I press the like button more than once?! Freaking great trick there, I'll apply that for sure later on :D. Thank you so much Nolly for sharing your discoveries!
I. AM. SHOOKED.
Thanks so much for sharing this! Definitely my new favorite trick.
Tried this on a super bleedy snare I’d been wrestling with and ooh la la, gating just got a second wind. Thanks for the tip.
That is kind of a game changer. Had huge problems with a hard hitted open off-beat hi-hat in my last production and it was terrible on the snare close mic...
God bless! Really great trick!
Brilliant so easy to use also - Thanks Nolly
Gosh this really surprised me! 🙌🏼💪🏼
This is literal gold!
It's a great tip, I just feel like for the kind of music I work on, the release on the "gate" is a bit too quick, but for this style it makes total sense, awesome.
whoa¡ massive difference, thanks nolly¡
Fantastic, works really well!
Saturn is such a stellar plugin.
Usually I use an phase inverted copy of a track with an added compressor because gates tend to sound too unnatural for me. I need to try this on my next mix. Thanks!
That's an awesome tipp! Thank You for this
Really interesting. I'm gonna try in future productions for sure.

Amazing Tips Nolly, Thank You
Nice! I was curious about how you did this since I watched the chat with Jordan.
whoa, what a great tool. thanks
Thank you Nolly! ❤
Love the Nolly Tips! Also

More videos from Nolly!
I love how ff products have enormous utility for their obvious uses, but as time goes by these awesome Easter eggs are revealed. Easily the best plug-in company imho. I simply am not interested in replacing any of their stuff.
I finally have an excuse to buy Saturn. Thx!
Thanks Nolly, gonna buy Saturn now, the drums on the last Periphery sounded amazing

Can this be used to remove cymbal bleed from live vocals?
Give it a go and let us know how it turns out!
Yes! I recommend doing this post-compression though. If your signal isn't consistent enough, you'll lose some words and moments if you're on the heavier-handed side.
Awesome trick.. Thanks 🙂
Would love to know what mic you used for Kick In 1 on this, sounds incredible
Thanks a lot for this!
AMAZING
Here I am, thinking I'm staring at a giant black disposable vape standing on your desk. Then I realize, it's the fucking stand for your mic 😂
just fucking amazing
Will there be a GGD library for the P5 kit? and will there be any mixing tutorials with P5 songs?
Oh come on, I just started doing this last week and thought I found me a little secret trick.
Now everyone knows!!
Wow, this is very cool. Can this be used for removing cymbals from vocal mics in a live recording?
More videos with the oryx pleasee
bruh! RIP Gate plugins?
Nolly, did you try the multiband gate by aixdsp yet?
Yep, it works really nice with a strong hits. But what about ghost notes and blastbeats ? Ghost notes in this video almost disappeared when processed with Saturn, unfortunately.

…where can I buy one?! 🖤
Wouldnt be better treating that with rx10 or AI that can separate freqs ?
i love you!
Video actually starts at 3:24.
wait, was he the bassist in Periphery?
Nice
Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees ! ! ! ! 😄😄😄
Using Saturn everywhere and it just don't sound bad at all hahahaha
Has anyone ever seen Nolly and Simon Whistler in the same room?
This video could've been only 30 sec but great info, thanks!!
Good gracious god, I'm going to abuse this! Thank you!
But first, what is Cymbal? and what is Cymbal Bleed? how do you eliminate Cymbal Bleed?
not gonna lie, that snare bottom on P5 is really emphasized compared to your and Periphery's previous works.
Was reallyyyy hoping to keep this secret for a bit longer. Oh wellllll
🤍🤍🤍
Get on with it already…. Five minutes of bs before you did anything
